Southeast Summer Championships: Day 1 Scout Blog

Alabama Staff

After a great first day of baseball at the Hoover Met, here are some of the top performers for all age groups at the PBR Southeast Summer Championships in Hoover, AL.

8:00 Games

Big League Xpress 15U vs. NABA Nationals 15U

-’22 SS/RHP Cole Nobles from Marianna HS (FL) had a very good day at the plate. Hitting in the 2 hole, he got things started for the Big League Xpress with a single to RF in the 1st and came around to score. His 2nd AB was more impressive, as he fell behind early 0-2 and fouled off some tough pitches to get back to 3-2 and drove a fastball to CF for another single. He ended up finishing 2-3 w/ a run scored and an RBI. Hitting from the left side, there is a lot to like from this upcoming sophomore.

Mizuno Gold Spikes 2020 vs. Alabama Angels 17U

-In a game where the Mizuno Golden Spikes put 16 runs on the board, one of the key blows came from the bat of ‘20 OF Gage Gregory from Germantown HS (MS). Gregory put a charge into one with the bases loaded to LF to clear the bases. There is some power in the bat, as he really uses his hips well in his swing. On the day, Gregory finished 2-3 with 2 H’s, 2 R’s and 3 RBI’s. Not a bad start to the tournament for the rising senior

Black Sox Baseball White 17U vs. Complete Game 17U

-’21 MIF Luke Barnwell from Phil Campbell HS showed some pop at the plate today. He went 2-3 today in the Black Sox walk off win over Complete Game. He had an RBI double in his first AB where he showed some strength in the opposite field gap. He has a thick, strong lower half with some room to grow.

-’20 LHP Matt Flanagan of Westside HS (GA) did a nice job of working in and out of trouble during his outing today, struggled to find the zone at times but managed to work through it for Complete Game 17U. He offers a deceptive ¾ arm slot and a 6’6 170 lbs frame. His FB has some late ASR and his velocity sat 79-81

10:15 Games

Angels Baseball 17U vs. 5 Star National Midsouth

-’20 MIF Tyler Wiggins from Lebanon HS (TN) had a solid day at the plate where he went 2-4 while driving in 2 runs for 5 Star National Midsouth. In his first AB he turned on a ball and barreled it off the warning track into left center field to get his team on the board early. Wiggins has a nice MIF frame at 5’11 170 lbs.

Top Gun 16U vs. Triton Rays 16U

-’20 RHP Aiden McSherry from Blessed Trinity Catholic (GA) got the nod on the mound for Triton Rays and did not disappoint. At 6’5 185 lbs., he possesses a wiry body with an easy delivery. His FB sat primarily 82-84 T87 and showed the ability to reach back for more when he needed it with 2 strikes. McSherry finished the day with 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB and 8 K’s.

12:30 Games

Excel Blue Wave 16U vs. Louisiana Knights 16U

-On a day where ‘21 Brock Hill of Chelsea HS probably didn’t have his best stuff, he still only allowed 1 run against a very potent Louisiana Knights lineup. Hill, a recent Ole Miss commit, battled all day long in his stint for the Blue Wave. His FB consistently sat 82-83 with ASR into RHH’s. His calling card, however, was his CB. Hill showed the ability to be able to flip in CB’s in any count, showing depth with late bite to it. In 4 IP, he allowed 2 H’s and struck out 6.

-After Hill’s 4 innings of work, Excel turned to ‘21 LHP Eli Copenhaver from Spain Park HS. Copenhaver was dominant on the mound, tossing 3 perfect frames while striking out 4. FB played 79-82 with ASR. Copenhaver showed the ability to backdoor his SL to RHH’s and get swing and misses with it down and away to LHH’s.

Tuscaloosa Sox 17U vs. Big League Xpress 17U

-’21 OF Logan Bowers from Tuscaloosa County HS showed some discipline at the plate today. He worked into deep counts and was able to get his pitch to drive. In his first AB, he worked into a 3-2 count with a runner in scoring position and was able to drive the ball through the left side to get the Tuscaloosa Sox an early lead. Bowers finished by going 2-3 at the plate with an RBI.

-’20 RHP/MIF Peyton Price of Seminole County HS (FL) had a solid 2 innings of work on the bump today for Big League Xpress 17U. Price finished his relief appearance with 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB and 2 K’s. With his 5’10 145 lbs frame, he produces a FB at 79-82 and a 12/6 like breaking ball at 67-69.

2:45 Games

United 17U vs. Louisville Jayhawks 17U

-For the Louisville Jayhawks, one bat that looked impressive was ‘20 1B Davis Crane from Trinity HS (KY). At 6’3 220 lbs, Crane possesses an advanced approach at the plate. In the LHH’s first AB of the day, he worked into a hitter’s count and drove a FB to RF to get the Jayhawks on the board in the 1st. Starting with an open stance, Crane comes back to square using a leg kick. He would finish the day 2-3 w/ an RBI.

Louisiana Nationals 16U vs. Triton Rays 16U

-One of the more impressive performances of the day came from ‘21 MIF/RHP Slade Zeppuhar from St. Amant HS (LA). Zeppuhar did it all today, as he started on the mound and carried a no-hitter through 4 IP. His FB ranged from 78-80 and showed the ability to mix in and out with it. His CB was 68-70 and was thrown consistently for strikes. His final line was 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB’s and 6 K’s. Offensively, he was hitless his first 3 AB’s, but came up with the bases loaded in the 6th and scorched a 3-0 FB into the RCF gap. It’s a very short, compact swing. There is a lot to like from this rising junior.

Here is Zeppuhar's 3 RBI double.

-’20 OF  Alden Moore of Captain Shreve HS (LA) is a big time LHH that has a frame of 5’11 205. He had a productive day at the plate in the 10-0 win for the Louisiana Nationals. At the plate Moore contributed by going 2-3 with a pair of RBI’s. He was able to drive the ball to the opposite field in his second AB. He also had a BB and was able to score all 3 times he reached base today.

5:00 Games

United 17U vs. Baseball Country 17U

-’19 RHP Caleb Seroski for United (LA) kept the opposing offense at bay all game in their 10-0 victory. Seroski, who is a LSU-Eunice CC recruit, displayed exceptional FB command. He sat 82-84 but had serious sink to it. His CB played 68-70 with depth and proved to be a very effective pitch during his outing. His final line was 6 IP, 2 H’s, 0 R, 0 BB and 2 K’s.
