Top-10 Profiles of 2019: No. 3 C.J. Abrams

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

We are on to the top-3 most viewed profiles of 2019, and all of the remaining are extremely promising prospects. We already had one first round pick from the 2019 MLB draft profiled, and now we have our second one in SS C.J. Abrams (Blessed Trinity). Abrams was committed to Alabama as he entered the MLB Draft, but the San Diego Padres saw big time talent in him and used the 6th overall pick in the first round to draft Abrams, making him the highest drafted player out of Georgia in 2019.

The 2019 Georgia player of the year, Abrams finished his prep career as the No. 1 ranked player in state, No. 3 overall and coincidentally enough, the No. 6 ranked player on the PBR Draft Board, the same exact position he was drafted in. A wiry athlete, the left-handed hitting Abrams stands 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. He has already silenced many of his doubters by hitting an astounding .401 in 142 ABs, collecting 57 hits in his first season of pro-ball.

Scouting Report

6/01/19Elite runner with strong bat to ball skills at a premium position. Early hacker that is still growing into his identity. Unique skill-set paired with unique tool set, leads to a high risk ceiling and a low risk floor. Going to take some time, but enough baseball player now with enough athletic ability to go big. Going to take time, but enough reward to manage risk.

4/12/19Wiry athlete with elite speed. Routinely gets down the line in 4.0-4.1, steals bases at will. Doesn't swing and miss much, but needs to drive the ball more consistently. I've seen a lot of slow tappers in the infield that he can just beat out. Has the strength to put it in the gap and turn on the jets. Quick hands allow him to whip the barrel through the zone when everything is working. Defensively, high-end athleticism allows him to move easily in the infield. Actions are sound. Should get a chance to stay at shortstop, but speed will easily play in the outfield. Arm is fringy now, but added strength should make it at least average to above average down the road.

7/20/18 - Opened the bottom of the first inning by smoking a 95-mph fastball for a double to left field. The hyper-athletic 6-foot-2 left-handed hitting Alabama recruit also showed off his premium speed by legging out a grounder to the second baseman, getting down the line in 3.90 seconds for an infield single. He then proceeded to steal second base. He also grounded out twice with run times of 4.00 and 4.05.

6/20/18 - Wiry frame at 6-foot-1, 178 pounds with quick-twitch actions. He has a narrow set-up at the plate and quick hands from the left side. He went 2-for-5 on the day, going with a changeup away for a base hit over the third baseman and then put a loose, easy swing on an 88 mph fastball for an RBI double in the left-center field gap. He ran a 4.2 on the turn.

3/10/18 - Abrams gave his commitment to Alabama Friday and now that the big decision is behind him he looks poised to have a big Junior campaign. Abrams has a level stroke that stays in the zone and impact speed to boot. He is also filling out and showing more power at the plate. He is in position to be one of the top players in the country in 2019, with the ability to play up the middle and be a top of the order bat with a legit run tool.
