Prep Baseball Report

Uncommitted Spotlight: LHP Jess Ackerman

Phil Kerber
Georgia Scouting Director

Our goal at Prep Baseball Report is to promote high school players, and give them the exposure they need to be able to play at the next level. With the 2020 high school season in limbo, we want to continue to be able to promote players, even when baseball is not being played. Starting today, we will be spotlighting several uncommitted prospects to help them get the exposure they need to play at the next level.

We have had a few good looks at southpaw Jess Ackerman (North Forsyth, 2021) from last summer to this spring. Ackerman was an infulential member of the Georiga Bombers pitching staff last June, helping them to a 16U NPI title. At the time, Ackerman sat in the low-80s with his fastball. Fast forward to this spring at the Georgia Dugout Club Tournament, and the 6-foot-2, 205-pound left-hander has added his fastball, sitting 83-85, and touching 87 multiple times. With such a loose, easy arm action, and a strong build, there is certainly more velocity to come as he continues to mature. Given his lower slot, his fastball plays with late run and he is able to locate it to all areas of the zone with. Ackerman also offers up a sweeping breaking ball that contrasts and plays nicely with this running fastball.

Scouting Report

2/22/20 - 6-foot-2 205-pounds. Strong frame, well built lefty. Has a solid base to build on. Super easy, and clean mechanics, arm works really well. Good rhythm and timing throughout the delivery. Slight drop in the arm slot, high ¾. FB was 83-85 T87 with ASR. CB was 70-72. Messed with timing some, showed good body control.

6/24/19 - Uncommitted 2021 LHP Jess Ackerman (Georgia Bombers) got the start for Georgia Bombers against Team Georgia. The southpaw went 4 ⅔ innings of one run ball. Carries proportional strength in 6-foot-2, 205-pound frame. Worked from a ¾ to low ¾ slot with a clean arm action, hides the ball well on the back-side. Fastball played mostly at 82-84, touching 86, used the whole zone. Utilized a slurve-like breaking ball that flashed late sweep at 68-71.
