Gable Mitchell Crowned Future Games MVP (Midwest)
August 21, 2020
Whether it has something to do with the high school season running so late into the summer and players peaking at the right time, or just the fact that they shine their brightest at the PBR Future Games, either way, the state of Iowa continues to excel under the brightest of lights. Heading into the 2020 event, the past two Future Games’ MVPs had come from the Hawkeye state (‘21 INF Aaron Downs, ‘21 OF Sam Petersen). Another loaded roster was eager to showcase its talent, this time at a “midwest pod†in Wisconsin that featured the top uncommitted underclassmen in the region.
Enter 2022 SS Gable Mitchell (Iowa City HS, IA).
Unassuming at 5-foot-9, 170-pounds, the switch-hitting shortstop turned in an outstanding performance from day one, filling the statline with impressive numbers throughout. The uber-athletic three-sport standout posted a 6.87 60-yard dash time before showing off big arm strength (92 mph) across the diamond while at shortstop. He then exhibited the ability to find consistent, hard contact from both sides of the plate with some sneaky pop to the pull side.
But just looking at Gable’s statline doesn’t do him justice. His baseball IQ and innate ability to be in the right place at the right time is something that is appreciated even more over time. He went 2-for-4 on the weekend, but also worked out four walks which allowed him to steal three bases and score three runs. A consummate “gamer†who craves competition, Gable is sure to be a close-follow for many college coaches moving forward.
Said PBR Iowa Scouting Director, Rob Allison:Â"Mitchell stepped out on the national stage for Team IA-MN-NE and performed from start to finish. His baseball IQ, gritty toughness, and overall skill set stood out the entire three day event. Gable is pound for pound; the best overall baseball player I have taken to the Future Games in the last five years. Sometimes we get lost in the tools, "prospect status", etc of scouting and evaluating- he knows how to play the game, goes out and does it at a high level, and plays to WIN! Whichever school that ultimately accrues his commitment will have a staple in their lineup for years to come."
The 2020 PBR Future Games (Midwest Pod) MVP: ‘22 SS Gable Mitchell.
