PBR IA Fall Review- Pitcher Evaluations

The PBR IA Fall Review event took place on Sunday, October 28, 2018. The event was held indoors at SportsIowa in Ames, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and college coaches in attendance.

pitCHER EVALS (ALPHABETICAL)
Jacob Barton, OF/LHP, Waukee, 2021
5-foot-10, 140-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.85 runner. Square stance with leg kick trigger, larger movements creating some hitches in swing, produces above avg. bat speed with longer levers, line drive approach, 92 mph exit velocity. Long and lean frame, easy actions and covers ground well, shows athleticism in field with clean projectable arm action in field, has carry and accuracy on throws, 82 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; short balance point, leaks early off rubber occasionally, short stride and lands inline to catcher, long clean arm action from OT slot. Fastball has solid running action at 78-79 mph. Shows consistent breaking ball for strikes with 12/6 shape. Inconsistent changeup; avg. action and tends to leave short of plate.
Owen Brauch, SS/RHP, Dowling Catholic, 2021
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.45 runner. Square balanced stance, slight rhythm in hands, shoulder tilt and works barrel uphill through contact, mid/pull approach, consistent solid contact with line drives and fly balls, 81 mph exit velocity. Softer hands to field, avg. footwork and direction to target, long arm action with slower release on throws, avg. accuracy to bag, 72 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; shows tempo to delivery, athletic balance point, long arm swing with stab on backside, throws across body and hides ball from hitter. Fastball showed varying action at 73-75 mph. Larger shape and break on 12/6 curveball. Tends to slow arm on changeup; creating straight action to plate.
Hunter Brown, RHP/1B, Southeast Polk, 2021
6-foot-5, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; shows tempo and body control, longer frame with improving strength, shorter compact arm action, lands inline to catcher and is slightly upright on release. Fastball was 78-79 mph with varying action to plate. Solid sweeping shape on 10/4 curveball with depth. Tends to drag back leg and slows delivery on changeup, pushing baseball to plate, with flat action. 7.47 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, compact swing, some stiffness with two hands on bat through and after contact, flashes hard line drive contact to pull side of field, 84 mph exit velocity. Above avg. arm for position, tends to squat to field, sure hands, solid athleticism, accurate arm to bag, 80 mph arm strength across infield.
Seth Clausen, SS/RHP, Pleasant Valley, 2021
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.66 runner. Easy stride, compact swing, loses balance when falling over plate to swing, inconsistent timing during bp session, flashed hard line drive contact to mid/pull side of field, has ability to use both sides of field with solid contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Active in field with above avg. feet and hands, shows actions and athleticism to field, accurate to bag with carry and has ability to throw from multiple angles, 81 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; rocker step into medium balance point, quicker actions off the rubber, athletic arm, shorter stride and lands across body. Fastball was 76-78 mph with varying action to plate. Shows arm speed on curveball with 11/5 shape. Action on changeup varies from sink and fade to cut action depending on side of plate thrown to.
Cooper Crouse, 3B/RHP, Waukee, 2020
5-foot-9, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.44 runner. Wide stance with choppy double tap trigger, has looseness in hands with solid rhythm, clean line drive path, barrels exit hitting zone early occasionally, gap to gap approach, 80 mph exit velocity. High fielding positions, moves with short choppy steps, sure hands, makes routine plays, accurate to bag with short stiff arm action, 72 mph arm strength across infield.
Ethan Drown, C/OF/RHP, Urbandale, 2021
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting utility player. 7.2 runner. Lean wiry strength with projectable build. Wider stance with balance, compact swing and stays connected through contact, flashes hard line drive and fly ball contact with pop in bat to pull side of field, 89 mph exit velocity. Solid/avg. actions in field, works through ball, shorter arm action, shows carry on throws with avg. accuracy to target, 86 mph outfield velocity. Moves well and is athletic behind plate, sure hands, sticks pitches in zone, good instincts to block, high setup, solid footwork, arm late on release, avg. accuracy to bag, 75 mph arm strength with 2.00-2.13 pop times. On mound; controlled delivery, leaks out from rubber early occasionally, longer wrapping arm action on back side, ball comes out clean and front and flashes life. Fastball was 82-84 mph, touching 86 mph one time, with varying action to plate. 10/4 shape on breaking ball with flat sliding break to plate. Changeup was left short of plate; with flashes of late fade and sink.
Elijah Green, RHP, Cascade, 2021
6-foot-2, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Longer projectable frame with size and strength in lower half. Rocker step, sits over rubber to gather, shorter stride down mound, cleaner arm path with high back elbow after separating from glove, shows extension out front, ball has riding life through zone. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying action to plate. 11/5 breaking ball has solid spin and shape with slider qualities. Solid circle changeup with fade and sink to arm side of plate.
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.13 runner. Rolling hand rhythm, choppy leg kick trigger, line drive swing, inconsistent contact, spray off bat, contact to all fields, 67 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete, works through ball, avg. carry and accuracy, solid raw arm strength for age, 77 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; starts square to plate, rocker step into higher leg kick balance point, collapses down mound with long stride, lands with front foot open to plate. Clean arm action with occasional life on baseball with arm speed. Fastball was 72-74 mph, delivered on straight plane, with flat action to plate. Tends to push breaking ball at times creating inconsistent shape and depth. Cut action on changeup to glove side of plate.
Andrew Janes, RHP, Ankeny Centennial, 2021
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed pitcher. Rolls into medium crouched balance point, complicated arm action on back side, arm un-ravels and delivers from ¾ slot, uncontrolled front leg and lands stiff with upright release. Fastball was 72-74 mph with straight action to plate. Slider action on breaking ball with avg. spin and depth of break. Changeup has flat action and is straight to plate.
Cooper Johnson, RHP/3B, WDM Valley, 2019
6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #87 ranked player in IA 2019 class. On mound; athletic on mound, rocker step into medium balance point, hard inverted W path on back side, above avg extension and arm is long to plate, shows hand quickness out front with flashes of life through zone. Fastball was 80-82 mph with heavy run and sink in bottom of zone. Solid shape and depth on 10/4 breaking ball. Changeup is thrown with above avg. hand speed creating hard sinking action in bottom of zone. 7.42 runner. Open stance, wider base, collapse into hitting position, flat line drive swing plane, shows pop in bat to pull side of field, gap to gap approach, 88 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete in field, soft hands, funnels underneath body occasionally, low ¾ arm slot, shows range to both sides, 80 mph arm strength across infield.
Kody Kleve, C/RHP, South Winneshiek, 2020
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.44 runner. Solid base with present strength in frame, early rhythm, avg. bat speed, dead pull approach, tends to pull bat through zone, uphill path, barrels baseball well, stays on and through contact, 81 mph exit velocity. Avg. footwork with long stride, longer release, inconsistent accuracy to bag, soft hands receiving, gives too much occasionally on fastballs, quiet and stays underneath breaking ball well, 77 mph arm strength with 2.08-2.23 pop times. On mound; rocker step into higher upright balance point, lands against stiff front leg, short arm action from high ¾ slot, upright on release. Fastball was 78-79 mph with flat action to plate. Throws 11/5 curveball along with a slightly firmer 10/4 slider. Avg. fade and sink on changeup to arm-side of plate.
Cameron Kuehl, RHP/OF, Ankeny Centennial, 2020
5-foot-11, 132-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; shows tempo and rhythm to delivery, higher tuck and turn, swings down mound with direction to plate, long pie arm action. Fastball was 71-73 mph with flat action to plate. Shows 12/6 break on curveball with avg. depth. Changeup has flat action to plate. 8.07 runner. Open stance, leg kick trigger, larger movements in swing, solid path through contact, spray contact, solid ability to barrel baseball, requires strength gains to match hitting mechanics and approach, 70 mph exit velocity. Avg. range and quickness, tends to field underneath and on side of ball, has carry and accuracy to target, 76 mph arm from outfield.
Dillon Kuehl, LHP/OF, Urbandale, 2022
6-foot-1, 195-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step into higher turned balance point, long front side creating deception and hiding ball from hitter, short compact arm action on backside with flashes of hand speed out front, high ¾ slot with quality downhill tilted plane to plate. Fastball was 77-79 mph with late running action to arm side of plate. Lands 1/7 breaking ball consistently for strikes. Above avg. fade and sink on changeup in bottom of zone. 7.27 runner. Crouched stance, some stiffness, lower hand slot, flat path, short finish, solid present strength, hard spray contact, mid/pull approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, tends to field with two hands, disrupts direction and momentum, longer one piece arm action, solid carry with accuracy to target, 83 mph arm strength from outfield.
Aiden McGee, OF/RHP, Waukee, 2021
6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.03 runner. Square stance, athletic in box, loads into back leg, compact swing through baseball, shows hard contact with mid/pull approach, above avg. bat speed in swing, 90 mph exit velocity. Quick release on throws, online with accuracy, has avg. footwork and tempo through baseball, tends to lose momentum on release, 84 mph arm strength from outfield. Has some raw tendencies defensively but is athletic with offensive potential and overall an above avg. player in the IA 2021 class. On mound; wider base into medium balance point, compact arm action with easy effort on release. Ball jumps out of hand with riding life through zone. Fastball was 78-80 mph with varying action to plate. Rigid actions throwing breaking ball with inconsistent arm speed and action. Changeup shows late fade in bottom of zone for strikes.
Mitchell Roeder, RHP, Maquoketa, 2022
5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed pitcher. Short rocker step into higher tuck and turn balance point, long arm swing with slight one piece action. Lands inline to catcher with solid extension to plate. Fastball was 69-71 mph with straight action to plate. Curveball has 12/6 shape with avg. break and depth. Has solid/avg. fade and sink on circle changeup to arm side of plate.
Presly Royer, LHP, Ankeny, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound left-handed pitcher. Rocker step intro controlled delivery, high front side hides baseball and creates deception, short arm path on back side, delivers from high slot, and creates downhill path to fastball. Was 75-77 mph with flashes of late run and sink to arm side of plate. Inconsistent breaking ball, left short of plate, with 12/6 shape. Flashes above avg. changeup action in bottom of zone for strikes.
6-foot-2, 230-pound right-handed pitcher. Larger thicker frame, longer rocker step into high kicked balance point, gains momentum through delivery, lands inline to catcher, upright on release throwing mostly with arm. Fastball was 78-81 mph on straight plane with varying action to both sides of plate. Solid 12/6 shape and break on curveball for strikes. Changeup is firm with straight action and avg. fade.
Camden Smyka, SS/RHP, Clear Creek-Amana, 2019
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.00 runner. Open stance with shoulder load, slight arm bar, barrel tends to exit hitting zone early, mid/pull approach, spray contact off the bat, shows best contact to middle of field, 76 mph exit velocity. Solid athlete, sure hands is solid footwork, longer release on throws, shows carry and accuracy to bag, 79 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short rocker step into crouched balance point, lands with front foot open- inline to catcher. Clean compact arm action with solid extension to plate. Fastball was 78-80 mph, touched 82 mph, with varying action to plate and occasional downhill plane. Early break on curveball with 11/5 shape. Changeup is straight and firm for strikes.
Gabe Swansen, SS/RHP, Johnston, 2021
5-foot-9, 154-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.4 runner. Open stance, easy shoulder load and stride, clean bat path, drives ball well to mid/pull side of field, above avg. bat speed, hard line drive and fly ball contact, 89 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, works around ball, sure/avg. hands, avg. mobility and range, long release on throws, has carry and accuracy to bag, 79 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; rocker step into short balance point, heavy front shoulder tip, creates occasional downhill plane when extended on release to plate, long arm swing with close to pie arm action. 5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled rocker step into back turned balance point, short arm swing with pie arm action, swings down mound and lands inline to catcher. Fastball was 76-79 mph with varying action to plate. Curveball has avg. depth and varies from 11/5 to 12/6 shape. Consistent strike thrower with changeup; showing late fade and sink. 7.07 runner.
