The PBR IA Fall Review event took place on Sunday, October 27, 2019. The event was held at Sports Iowa in Ames, IA. The event featured prospects from the 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and numerous college coaches in attendance. 

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the PBR IA Fall Review.

pitchER EVALUATIONS

Pierce Anderson, 3B/RHP, Johnston, 2023
6-foot, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.75 runner. Square stance, heavy body load, rotates shoulders into arm bar launch position, spray contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Heavier feet, tends to field under body, long release on throws, shows above avg. raw arm strength for age, 82 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; leg swing into medium balance point, stronger lower half, lands slightly across body, slight pie arm action. Fastball was 79-82 mph with quality varying action for strikes. Shows feel for breaking ball with 11/5 shape and solid depth. Avg. fade and control of changeup for strikes.

Nathan Anderson, RHP, Bondurant-Farrar, 2020
6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handing pitcher. #62 ranked player in IA 2020 class. Larger frame with longer legs, crouched balance point, has made improvements striding inline with catcher, lands with open front foot, short cocked arm draw on back side. Fastball was 86-88 mph, touching 89 mph, with varying action in bottom of zone for strikes. Avg. shape and depth on breaking ball with 11/5 shape. Late down action on heavy changeup in bottom of zone.

Luke Bollier, RHP/OF, Iowa City Liberty, 2022
6-foot-4, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; swings into medium crouched balance point, lands open to plate, short arm action with length out front. Fastball was 73-74 mph with varying action for strikes. Avg. velo and depth on curveball with sharper break. Solid fade and sink on changeup for strikes. 7.71 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, low hand slot, stiffness in body, spray contact, gap to gap approach, 74 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, stiffer hands to field, long release on throws, 76 mph arm strength from outfield.

Nicholas Burkhart, RHP, Davenport Assumption, 2020
5-foot-11, 154-pound right-handed pitcher. Sidestep into segmented delivery, longer arm action, lands inline but with front foot open to plate. Solid arm speed on changeup. Throws strikes and has feel for secondary. Fastball was 80-81 mph, varying action, on slight downhill plane. Solid depth on curveball with small shape and short break to plate. Changeup is heavy and works well in bottom of zone.

Noah Cameron, RHP/3B, Southeast Polk, 2020
6-foot-2, 160-poundright-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step into simple delivery, creates deception with side arm slot. Life on fastball at 77-78 mph with late run and sink action. Slider is solid out of low slot with short small break for strikes. Changeup is firm but flashes late run and sink action to arm side of plate. 7.44 runner. Open stance, knee to knee trigger, winding load, snap hook contact, pull approach, spray contact off bat, 80 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, shows actions to field, works through ball, follows throws, low arm slot with tailing action on throws, 80 mph arm strength across infield.

Quentin Culbertson, RHP, Coon Rapid-Bayard, 2021
5-foot-10, 180-pound right-handed pitcher. Durable frame on mound, clean compact arm action, cuts through body on release, some stiffness in landing. Fastball was 77-79 mph with solid run and sink action for strikes. Flashes occasional sharpness to breaking ball with solid depth and 11/5 shape. Avg. action on changeup; thrown to arm side of plate.

Hudson Dunwoody, OF/RHP, Ankeny, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.4 runner. Square stance, body load, rolls hands into lower hitting slot, works up through baseball, spray contact, mid/pull approach, 79 mph exit velocity. Average actions in field, covers ground well, clean arm action, tends to stop after throw, avg. accuracy to target, 78 mph arm strength from outfield.

Caden Easter, RHP, Woodward-Granger, 2020
5-foot-10, 185-pound right-handed pitcher. Shorter compact frame, stronger lower half, compact arm action, aggressive out front and works baseball downhill. Fastball was 80-83 mph with varying action to plate. Breaking ball has 12/6 shape with solid/avg. depth. Varying action on changeup; some stiffer actions on release.

Eli Eldred, 1B/LHP, Gilbert, 2023
5-foot-8, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.9 runner. Square stance, body load, works up and through baseball, solid bat speed for age, best contact to mid/pull side of field, 81 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, solid actions, covers ground well, solid receiver around bag, 68 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short rocker step into balanced position over rubber, short cock arm action on back side, some stiffness to landing point and release. Fastball was 69-71 mph with slight running action to plate. Avg. shape with early break on 1/7 curveball. Solid fade and sink on changeup; cuts through at times creating inconsistent action.

Luke Fordyce, OF/RHP, Waterloo West, 2021
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.37 runner. Wide stance with long stride, stiffer hands in swing, arm bar in load creating length to contact, present wiry strength, flashes hard contact to mid/pull side of field, 88 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, works through ball, shows actions and is comfortable fielding the ball, throws have carry and accuracy to target, 84 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; longer leg swing into athletic balance point, long clean arm action, shorter stride and lands across body cutting off lower half. Fastball was 80-82 mph, touching 84 mph, with varying action to plate. 12/6 curveball has solid depth and is thrown for strikes. Avg. action on changeup with flashes of fade and sink.

Dylan Fuqua, 2B/RHP, Waukee, 2020
6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.12 runner. Square crouched stance, front heel turn trigger, arm bar in load, uphill path, flashes of bat speed, line drive and fly ball contact, 87 mph exit velocity. Moves with energy, low arm slot, decent athlete, tends to field deep into body, tailing action on throws, 79 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short quick tempo, low ¾ slot, lands across body, cuts through baseball on release. Fastball was 74-75 mph with easy ability to command strike zone. 11/5 breaking ball with avg. depth. Good feel for changeup; thrown near fastball arm speed.

Luke Gainer, LHP, Waukee, 2020
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed pitcher. Sleeper in the 2020 class and will make significant jump in rankings from current spot at #122. Athletic with body control, arm is extremely clean and loose, ball jumps out of hand, and shows above avg. secondary pitches. Fastball was 83-85 mph with late run and sink action for strikes. Throws two breaking balls; true 1/7 curveball with solid shape and spin and a sharp slider/cutter that has above avg. depth. Changeup is thrown at fastball arm speed with above avg. action. Has consistently continued to improve through high school; 3-4 pitch mix for strikes currently and projects to be an upper 80’s arm once he enters college.

Blake Grazier, RHP/2B, Cedar Falls, 2021
6-foot-1, 163-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; tuck and turn into higher balance point, solid tempo to delivery, aggressive down mound, lands across body. Fastball was 74-75 mph, turns ball over on release, creating sinking action. Avg. 11/5 shape on slider with solid depth. Cut action on changeup with avg. feel for zone. 7.4 runner. Square stance, body load, flat swing plane, some stiffness to swing, spray contact off bat, 76 mph exit velocity. Avg. range and actions, long windup and release on throws, tends to field deep under body, accurate arm to bag, 72 mph arm strength across infield.

Alex Heckroth, RHP/3B, Davenport Assumption, 2020
6-foot, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short balance point, using lower half well in delivery, clean compact arm action, shows extension to plate. Fastball was 79-80 mph with varying action to plate. Showed one of best breaking balls at event; tight spinning 12/6 curveball with depth and sharp break. Hard run and sinking action on changeup to arm side of plate. 7.25 runner. Square stance with body load, slight shoulder rotation to trigger swing, works up and through baseball, solid present strength, underneath at contact, spray contact across field, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, works around and through baseball, some stiffness to hands, makes routine plays and is accurate to bag on throws, 81 mph arm strength across infield.

Bryce Higgins, SS/RHP, Urbandale, 2023
5-foot-8, 140-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.77 runner. Crouched stance, slashy bat path, snap hooks off barrel, mid/pull approach with raw offensive mechanics, 73 mph exit velocity. Solid actions, tends to stop on throws, decent athlete, young and will improve with continued development, 78 mph arm strength across infield. Smaller frame but athletic on mound, builds tempo throughout, some effort in release, clean compact arm action. Fastball was 77-79 mph with late cutting action to glove side of plate. Solid shape and spin on 11/5 breaking ball. Changeup is hard with varying action at plate.

Cael Kolacia, RHP/SS, Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 2021
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #53 ranked player in Iowa 2021 class. On mound; builds tempo in delivery, aggressive down mound, hitchy arm action with hard stab on backside, works downhill with good arm speed out front. Fastball was 85-86 mph with late running action. Above avg. depth on 12/6 breaking ball thrown with good arm speed. Changeup has running action with good finish in bottom of zone. 7.00 runner. Open stance, slight barrel tip to trigger swing, shows quality extension through contact, athletic in box and consistently squared baseball with hard contact, 85 mph exit velocity. Fields out front, moves well in field, throws have carry to bag, 85 mph arm strength across infield.

Zach Krantz, 2B/RHP, West Burlington, 2020
5-foot-10, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.63 runner. Square stance, rolling hand load, eye level changes throughout swing, line drive approach, consistent solid contact, line drives and ground balls off bat, 78 mph exit velocity. Avg. athletic actions and footwork, sure hands, makes routine plays, avg. accuracy to bag, 75 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; slower tempo to balance point, short stride and lands across body, longer sideways draw with arm action. Fastball was 75-77 mph with occasional hand quickness out front. Lands breaking ball for strikes consistently with 12/6 shape and solid depth. Stiffer actions on changeup, tends to wrap hand early, with avg. feel for zone.

Collin Leavy, SS/RHP, Iowa City West, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.06 runner. Square stance, rolling hand load, some stiffness in lower half, dead pull approach, flat swing plane, line drive contact, 88 mph exit velocity. Active feet, works through ball, inconsistent glove, shows ability to make routine plays, lower arm slot effecting carry and accuracy to bag, 75 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; segmented delivery, ¾ arm slot, hides ball well from hitter. Fastball was 75-78 mph with slight life to arm side of plate. Avg. depth on 11/5 breaking ball thrown consistently in bottom of zone for strikes. Varying action on changeup; occasionally released underneath creating flat action.

Gage Martin, RHP/SS, Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2022
5-foot-10, 142-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step into higher paused balance point, pie arm action, lands open to plate, has body control and finish out front. Fastball was 6971 mph, turns over some at release, creating occasional run and sink. Avg. feel for inconsistent breaking ball with 11/5 shape. Cut action on changeup; thrown to glove side of plate. 7.27 runner. Square stance with body load, easy swing with athletic movements, consistently squares baseball with line drive approach, follow bat in class, 74 mph exit velocity. Active in field, works around and through, avg. hands, short arm action, 69 mph arm strength across infield.

Thomas Matthes, RHP/3B, Eagle Grove, 2022
6-foot, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; controlled into higher athletic balance point, long stab down in arm circle, some hand quickness and extension out front. Fastball was 71-73 mph, touching 74 mph, with varying action for avg. strikes. Solid feel for 12/6 breaking ball consistently in bottom of zone. Solid changeup with flashes of run and sink. 7.46 runner. Slightly open stance, longer stride, collapse through contact, short to contact, tends to reach for outside pitches, slashy swing with spray contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, late glove presentation, tends to field deep under body, long arm action, accurate throws to bag, 71 mph arm strength across infield.

Anthony McGuire, RHP, Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 2020
6-foot-3, 205-pound right-handed pitcher. Rocker step into crouched balance point, short choppy arm action, strides open to plate, low to ¾ arm slot. Fastball was 75-76 mph with slight run and sink action. Heavy 12/6 curveball with rolling break to plate. Solid/avg. changeup thrown in middle of plate for strikes.

Nathan Miller, RHP, Ankeny, 2020
6-foot-2, 165-pound right-handed pitcher. Stretch only, long arm action, works downhill well, consistent strike thrower. Fastball was 75-77 mph, mostly straight, for strikes on downhill plane. Flashed 11/5 curveball with sharper break for strikes. Solid fade on changeup for strikes as well.

Jacob Papesh, 2B/RHP, Gilbert, 2021
6-foot-3, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.65 runner. Wider stance with longer stride, line drive swing plane, ground ball and line drive contact, mid/pull approach, 78 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, light on his feet, fields deep under body occasionally, fields with rhythm, soft hands, accurate to bag with solid actions, 76 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; solid athletic delivery, lands with front foot open to plate, has extension through release, longer arm action. Fastball was 74-75 mph with flat running action; mostly straight to plate. Easy ability to land curveball for strikes; 12/6 shape with solid depth. Changeup is above avg.- disappears out of bottom of zone with plus depth.

John Reding, RHP/1B, Dowling Catholic, 2022
6-foot-3, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; rocker step into medium balance point, paused sideways swing to arm path, lands open to plate. Fastball was 72-74 mph with varying action to plate. Early break on 11/5 curveball with inconsistent shape. Cut action on changeup to arm side of plate. 7.50 runner. Square stance, slight shoulder load, stiffness in lower half, short path through zone, spray contact with mid/pull approach, 77 mph exit velocity. Decent athlete at position with raw fielding mechanics, makes routine plays, choppy arm action, 69 mph arm strength across infield.

Bryce Rinderknecht, RHP, Ankeny, 2020
6-foot, 210-pound right-handed pitcher. Stretch only, higher front knee balance point, swings down mound, lands inline to catcher. Compact arm action, shows extension and finish to plate, turns ball over on release. Fastball was 75-76 mph, slight downhill plane, with run and sink. Curveball varies between 11/5 to 12/6 with avg. spin and solid depth. Changeup is usable with solid overall action; thrown near fastball arm speed.

Carter Schulte, RHP/OF, Waterloo West, 2021
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. #30 ranked player in Iowa 2021 class. On mound; rocker step into higher athletic tuck and turn balance point, long arm action with good hand speed out front. Fastball was 85-86 mph with varying action to plate. 12/6 curveball is thrown hard showing small shape with short break. Solid running action on changeup with fade in bottom of zone. 6.90 runner. Square stance with choppy leg kick trigger, arm bar in load, athletic with ability to square baseball with hard contact, 89 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, has momentum on throws, above avg. carry and accuracy to target, 89 mph arm strength from outfield.

Sam Skarich, SS/RHP, North Scott, 2022
6-foot, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.78 runner. Square stance, easier body load, line drive swing plane, tends to yank barrel through zone, mid/pull approach, consistent solid contact, 82 mph exit velocity. Long athletic frame, avg. hands when stopping to field, higher stance, arm-side throws to bag, 77 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short medium balance point, low ¾ slot, creates deception to hitter. Fastball was 75-78 mph with life to arm side of plate with late explosive run and sink. Sweeping breaking ball is consistently thrown for strikes. Firm changeup with late run and sink.

Nicholas Skerik, RHP/SS, Burlington Notre Dame, 2020
5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Smaller frame but athletic on mound, shows good arm quickness, higher leg kick delivery. Fastball was 83-85 mph with running action for strikes. Breaking ball is thrown with above avg. arm speed creating tight spin with small short break in bottom of zone. Tends to open early on changeup; elevated with flat running action. 6.89 runner. Square stance with choppy knee to knee trigger, larger triggers and movements, squared baseball consistently, mid/pull approach, 84 mph exit velocity. Solid athletic actions, works through ball, avg. accuracy with carry, projects as college second baseman with solid arm strength, 81 mph arm strength across infield.

Brayden Smith, RHP/3B, Cedar Falls, 2021
5-foot-9, 230-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.64 runner. Square stance, rolling hand load, above avg. present strength, raw swing losing balance through contact, flashes hard contact to pull side of field, 84 mph exit velocity. Stiffer movements in field, one piece arm action, fields routine with avg. accuracy to bag, 70 mph arm across infield. On mound, fastball at 72-74 mph has varying action and movement. Breaking ball has loose 11/5 shape with early break. Avg. action on changeup thrown at 65-68 mph.

Carter Thomas, OF/LHP, Mason City, 2022
6-foot, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.03 runner. Tall upright stance, uphill path through contact, shows solid bat speed, line drive and fly ball contact off bat, pull approach, 77 mph exit velocity. Plays fast in field, athletic movements and action, long arm action, follows throws, shows carry and accuracy to target, 79 mph arm strength from outfield. On mound; segmented delivery, arm is long and loose, ball jumps out of hand with clean release. Fastball was 71-74 mph, for strikes, delivered on downhill plane. Larger break and shape on 1/7 curveball. Avg./solid run and sink on changeup to arm side of plate.
