Oct. 20th Unsigned Senior Showcase: MIF Analysis

On Sunday, October 20th PBR Indiana hosted the fall Unsigned Senior Showcase at Bishop Chatard High School in Indianapolis.  Forty players in the class of 2014 from Indiana and three player from KY, IL, and MO participated in the event.  Below we analyze the middle infielders from the event.   

Top 5

1. Jeff Wetzler, SS, Castle HS, 2014: 5-foot-10, 150 pound senior hits from the left side.  Starts in a slight crouch and finishes tall.  Short compact swing.  High contact hitter, lots of line drives.  Needs to improve overall strength.  Exit velo was 75 mph.  Defensively, possesses good hands with a quick release.  Good feel for the position.  Plays through the baseball well with the ability to play on the run.  Across the diamond was 74 mph.  Recently committed to Parkland.

2. Brian Butchee, SS, North Central HS, 2014: 5-foot-9, 195 pound senior is a switch hitter.  From the left side starts open with low hands.  Flat bat that stays in the  zone.  Uphill swing plane.  Good balance throughout with average hand speed.  More of a contact hitter from the left side of the plate.  From the right side mirrored swing with higher hands a more loose and athleticism in the swing. Posted an 84 mph exit velo.  Defensively, looks the part with good hands and a good release.  Ability to throw from multiple arm angles.  Plays through the baseball well.  Lacks premium foot speed.  Was 72 across the IF projecting him to be more of a 2B.

3. Chris Waidelich, 2B/MIF, Zionsville HS, 2014: 5-foot-9, 175 pound senior ran a 7.07 60.  At the plate displays a short, compact swing that’s uphill.  Lower half shows some stiffness.  Bars during the load. Exit velo was 79 mph.  Defensively, shows a quick release with good footwork setting himself up well.  Lacks premium arm strength.  Projects more as a 2B.  Overall actions are above average.  Was 73 mph across the diamond. 

4. Evan Nixon, 2B/MIF, Carmel HS, 2014: 5-foot-11, 170 pound senior starts tall and narrow at the plate.  Uses a leg kick.  Maintains good balance.  Swing is slightly downhill.  Exit velo was 80 mph.  In the field displays average foot speed with an above average glove.  Was 76 mph across the field.  

5. Mitch Caster, SS, Greenwood HS, 2014: 6-foot, 180 pound senior starts narrow at the plate.  Use of lower half needs to improve as he gets locked up.  Swing is short and compact.  Overall simple approach produces line drives.  Exit velo was 76 mph.  Defensively moves well with above average hands.  Shows average arm strength at 76 mph.  

Best of the Rest (In Alphabetical Order)

Ryan Kerschner, 2B/MIF, Columbia City HS, 2014: 5-foot-11, 215 pound senior shows an aggressive approach at the plate with projectable power.  Swing plane is uphill and finishes two handed.  Uses all of his body to produce power.  Exit velo was 85 mph.  Defensively projects more as a corner IF.  Lacks foot speed and arm strength to remain up the middle.  Was 71 mph across the diamond.  

Logan Richey, 2B/MIF, Seymour HS, 2014: 5-foot-10, 145 pound senior starts in a slight crouch and loads back.  High front elbow.  Still physically needs to get stronger.  Exit velo was 68 mph.  Defensively, makes the routine play consistently.  Foot speed is average.  Lacks premium arm strength.  Was 71 mph across the diamond.

Brandon Shipp, SS, Warsaw HS, 2014: 5-foot-8, 150 pound senior starts open in a slight crouch at the plate.  Uses slight leg kick during his load.  Athletic swing but lacks separation causing it to be a little long Hand speed is good.  Defensively, projects as a 2B.  Moves well with average hands.  Funnels.  Shows a quick release.  Was 73 mph across the diamond.

Marty Underwood, SS, Greenwood HS, 2014: 5-foot-10, 150 pound senior starts slightly open at the plate with a short stride.  Lower half is inconsistent.  Possesses good hand speed with good balance throughout.  Flashed some good swings, but inconsistent.  Struggles with pitches on the outer half.  Defensively, his athletic suggests he’ll play 3B.  Hands are above average, with the ability to throw from multiple arm angles.  Tendency to field the ball flat footed.  Was 73 mph across the diamond.
