By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

The Class of 2017/2018 Fall Prospect Games took place at the University of Louisville on October 4 and included close to 60 players looking to establish themselves as some of the top young players in the state.  Five of the eight young pitchers for Team Carbon topped at 81 mph or better, led by Daviess County 2017 RHP Jack Schneider at 89 mph, and Trinity 2017 LHP Brody Heil at 84 mph.

The following is a look at all Team Carbon pitchers from the event.  This is pitcher analysis only.  Those players who also played a position at the event had their position player analysis featured in a previous article.

Jack Schneider, RHP/3B, Daviess County HS, 2017
6-foot-3, 186-pound prospect with lean/athletic frame that projects, uses medium to long arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, deliberate delivery, very quick arm, throws across body at times, fastball sat 87-89 mph in his first inning of work, 68-72 mph curveball showed tight spin and 12/6 action, developed a blister and struggled with command in second inning with velocity dropping to 81-84, allowed two hits, struck out two and walked four in his outing, extremely high ceiling, with continued refinement could be a very highly-coveted arm in the 2017 class.

Brody Heil, LHP, Trinity HS, 2017
5-foot-11, 167-pound prospect uses shorter arm action, ¾ to high-3/4 arm slot, arm shows quickness, lower half stays online, repeats delivery well with regular effort, fastball sat 79-83 mph touching 84 and showed significant arm-side run, good command of 65-68 mph curveball with 1/7 action, also flashed a 72 mph slider with more lateral action, good arm action on 70-72 mph changeup, good athlete on the mound, fields position well, throw strikes, allowed two hits and struck out two in two innings of work, good upside with potential to be high-level 2017 LHP.

Tate Meade, RHP/1B, Johnson Central HS, 2018
5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect uses medium arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, good tempo in delivery, repeats delivery well with minimal effort, fastball sat 78-80 mph touching 82 on one occasion and shows occasional cutting action, advanced curveball for age at 66-69 mph with 12/6 action and good depth, commands curveball well, showed a 72-73 mph changeup thrown with good arm speed, allowed no hits, walked one, and struck out two in his two innings of work, potential high-level prospect on the mound and one to follow closely.

Brian Baxa, RHP/1B, Danville HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 200-pound prospect, big/physical body, uses long and loose arm action through a ¾ arm slot, up tempo delivery, arm slot produces some arm-side run and sink on fastball, fastball sat 79-81 mph, curveball showed short/late break at 69-72 mph, consistently pounds the strike zone, allowed two hits in two innings of work, sinking fastball produces a lot of ground balls, should be watched closely for potential velocity gains.

Kaden Rose, C/3B/RHP, West Carter HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 190-pound prospect with strong frame, uses shorter arm action through high-3/4 to over-the-top  arm slot, regular effort in delivery, good lower half direction, fastball sat 78-82 mph and is mostly straight, flashed a good curveball with tight spin and sharp 11/5 action at 64-68 mph, showed the ability to throw a 71 mph changeup for strikes, allowed two hits, walked two, and struck out two in two innings of work, has shown a significant increase in velocity since last winter.

Tyler Gabehart, SS/RHP, Fern Creek HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 135-pound prospect uses shorter arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, regular effort in delivery, continued to make strides on the mound, showed a significant increase in velocity since the summer as fastball sat 73-76 mph, curveball showed continued development at 66-67 mph with 11/5 action, allowed one hit in working a scoreless inning, impressed with the additional arm strength and improvement in the curveball Gabehart has shown in just a few months time.

Max Vickers, RHP, Ryle HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 165-pound prospect has a lanky frame with projection, uses short arm action through a high-3/4 slot, good rhythm in delivery with minimal effort, works the inner part of the plate well, fastball is straight and sat 72-74 mph, 65-66 mph curveball showed short break and tended to be up in the zone, should continue to add velocity as he fills out his frame, allowed two hits, walked one, and struck out one in his two innings of work.

Sam Hein, RHP/3B, Owensboro Catholic HS, 2018
6-foot, 175-pound prospect uses medium arm action through a high-3/4 arm slot, regular effort in delivery, lower half stays online, fastball is straight and sat 71-73 mph, curveball shows gradual 12/6 action, showed a 63 mph changeup, hit and walked a batter early in his outing but then settled in to throw consistent strikes, allowed three hits in his one inning of work.
