KY College Prospect Showcase: Catcher Analysis

The Kentucky College Prospect Showcase took place on Sunday, August 2 and afforded close to 60 players the opportunity to showcase their abilities.

The following is a look at the group of catchers who participated in the event.

Matthew Andrews, C/3B, Lebanon HS (TN), 2016
6-foot-3, 196-pound right handed hitter, strong and athletic frame, hits from a balanced/wide stance with minimal stride, short to the ball with good extension through contact, loose hands create some barrel whip and bat speed, 87 mph exit velocity off the tee, has power potential at the next level, ran a 7.52 60-yard dash. As a catcher shows very good arm strength with accurate throws, 81 mph velocity, footwork is solid, has room for quicker release, event best 1.94-2.02 pop times. Shows ability to also handle third base with athletic actions and solid hands, accurate arm across the diamond at 85 mph.

Tyler Wood, C, Central Hardin HS, 2019
6-foot-1, 195-pound right-handed hitter, physically advanced for age, hits from a tall and open stance, loads front foot back, has an aggressive stride but still maintains balance, short swing path with extension through contact, swing is loose and easy, shows good bat speed for age, 84 mph exit velocity off the tee, flashes power potential, ran a 7.56 60-yard dash. Strong and athletic presence behind the plate, footwork stays online, solid transfer and release, above average arm strength at 76 mph, 2.06-2.08 pop times with most throws accurate, a young player to keep a very close eye on.

Jon Ross Cato, C, Floyd Central HS (IN), 2017
6-foot-5, 180-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, path works uphill at times, high hand finish, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, 74 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a solid 7.14 60-yard dash. Showed solid arm strength from behind the plate at 77 mph, short high-3/4 release, feet show some quickness and stay mostly online, accurate throws to the bag, 2.02-2.10 pop times.

Hunter Evans, C, South Warren HS, 2018
6-foot-3, 165-pound right-handed hitter with lanky frame, hits from a balanced stance with a long stride, ball jumps of his bat when squared up, impressed in his round with gap power, 76 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 7.66 60-yard dash. Defensively, showed consistent pop times from 2.08-2.11 with 70 mph velocity, throws were more accurate than previous event, has a fairly quick transfer with a short high-3/4 release.

Austin Mueller, C, Lawrenceburg HS (IN), 2017
6-foot-1, 190-pound left-handed hitter hits from an open stance and squares front side with a short stride, slight uphill swing path, shows flashes of occasional pull-side power, registered a 72 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran an 8.15 60-yard dash. Had a tendency to come up out of crouch early on throws to second base, decent glove to hand transfer, short high-3/4 release with 68 mph velocity, 2.14-2.22 pop times with very accurate throws to the second base bag.

Tyler Belcher, C, Marshall County HS, 2019
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, line drive type hitter with average bat speed, mid-field approach, young player whose offensive game will continue to evolve with strength gains, 75 mph exit velocity off the tee, 8.03 60-yard dash. Defensively, footwork drifts significantly into right-handed batters box, quick transfer with longer ¾ release, 68 mph velocity with 2.18-2.23 pop times, some accurate throws to the bag.

Jackson Fitzgerald, C, Paducah Tilghman HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 170-pound right-handed hitter hits from a slightly closed stance with a short, open stride, back foot moves forward in swing creating some balance issues, line drive type hitter with a gap to gap approach, 78 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran a 8.58 60-yard dash. Has a quick transfer with a short ¾ release, fails to gain sufficient ground on throws, 69 mph velocity with accurate throws to the bag, 2.15-2.20 pop times, pop times and arm strength will improve with better footwork.
