Preseason All-State Showcase: Class of 2017/2018 Middle Infielders

Last Saturday, February 14, more than 100 players from all corners of the state convened at Champions Baseball Academy in Nicholasville for the third annual Preseason All-State Showcase. Over the coming days we will continue to take a look at all players who participated in the event.

Below we take a look at the Class of 2017 middle infielders who were in attendance. This is position player analysis only. Those players who also pitched at the event will have their pitching evaluation featured in a separate article.

Austin Wise, SS, R/R, Butler HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 180-pound prospect has added 10 pounds to athletic frame, right-handed hitter had an impressive wound of batting practice with several hard line drives, hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, good balance throughout swing, fluid rhythm, gets the barrel through the zone with quick hands, showed improved speed with a 7.03 60-yard dash, 85 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows soft hands and athletic actions, good footwork and works through the ball well, showed a slight increase in arm strength at 75 mph across the infield, potential high-level prospect.

Trip Lockhart, RHP/SS, R/R, Lexington Catholic HS, 2017
6-foot-1, 155-pound prospect has added 10 pounds to frame since the fall, right-handed hitter hits from an open stance, leg kick trigger with a short stride, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, showed an increase in bat speed from previous event, 83 mph exit velocity, ran a 7.50 60-yard dash. Defensively, showed a big jump in arm strength at 83 mph across the infield, very accurate throws, soft hands, high-3/4 release, plays through the ball with solid footwork, high follow in 2017 class.

Clay Combs, 2B/RHP, R/R, Bryan Station HS, 2017
6-foot, 145-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a tall and open stance, gets to square with an aggressive stride, line drive type hitter with flashes of pull-side power, has potential to develop into consistent power threat as he works to get stronger, ran 7.35 60-yard dash, 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows soft hands, good lateral movement, long exchange, high-3/4 release with 77 mph arm strength across the infield, accurate throws, a player to watch over the next few years.

Brenden Bube, RHP/SS/OF, R/R, Lanesville HS (IN), 2017
5-foot-9, 155-pound prospect showed an increase in all measurables. Right-handed hitter hits from an open stance, toe tap with an aggressive stride, wraps some in load creating some length in swing, aggressive approach at the plate, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, ran a 7.60 60-yard dash, 80 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows athletic infield and outfield actions, hands work, attacks the ball and plays through it in the outfield, showed a big increase in arm strength at 82 mph across the infield and 83 mph from the outfield, high-energy type player who continues to make strides in overall game.

Hunter Wright, RHP/SS, R/R, Paul Laurence Dunbar HS, 2017
5-foot-10, 143-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, brings front foot back slightly in load with a toe tap and short stride, longer swing path, line drive type hitter with middle to opposite field approach, offensive game should continue to evolve as he gets physically stronger, ran a 7.43 60-yard dash (7.32 previous event), 75 mph exit velocity (78 previous event). Defensively, shows playable hands, athletic actions, arm is loose, long high-3/4 release, showed a slight increase in velocity across the infield at 79 mph, accurate throws to the first base bag.

Nathan Henry, RHP/SS, R/R, Lexington Christian Academy, 2017
6-foot, 160-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a wide and slightly open stance, short stride, short swing path, loose hands, line drive type hitter likes to work the middle of the field, showed improved speed from previous event with a 7.30 60-yard dash, 81 mph exit velocity (86 previous event). Defensively, shows average hands and actions, 72 mph arm strength across the infield (76 at previous event).

Jordan Blick, SS, L/R, Russellville HS, 2017
6-foot, 165-pound prospect, left-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, toe tap with minimal stride, good balance, short swing path with line drive production, has solid potential offensively with additional strength, ran 7.91 60-yard dash, 73 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows adequate hands, footwork gets choppy and has room for improvement, accurate throws across the infield, 73 mph arm strength with short high-3/4 release.

Jonathan Gillock, SS/OF/RHP, R/R, Casey County HS, 2017
5-foot-9, 145-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, good balance, wraps bat in load, level swing path, squared up several line drives in his round of batting practice, line drive type hitter, ran 7.50 60-yard dash, 73 mph exit velocity. Defensively, participated as both a SS and OF, showed better as an outfielder, attacks an plays through the ball well, clean exchange, 74 mph arm strength with long high-3/4 release. As a SS, has room to improve hands, 73 mph arm strength across the infield.

Aaron Sary, SS, L/R, DuPont Manual HS, 2018
5-foot-8, 150-pound prospect, left-handed hitter hits from an open stance, gets to square with a short stride, shows good balance, average bat speed, line drive type hitter with middle to opposite field approach, good extension through contact, young prospect with solid offensive potential, will need to continue improving speed, 8.07 60-yard dash, 76 mph exit velocity. Defensively, shows playable hands, short ¾ release with 71 mph arm strength across the infield.
