Unsigned Senior Showcase: Position Player Analysis

Our annual winter Unsigned Senior Showcase took place in December at Legends Sports Academy and is typically the case, produced several solid performances from some of the top uncommitted seniors in the state. All of the players below remain uncommitted with the exception of Matthew Gammon who committed to Southeastern Illinois shortly after the event.

The following is an in depth look at the position players who participated in the event.

Middle Infielders

Matthew Gammon, SS/RHP, Shelby County HS, 2016
6-foot, 200-pound left-handed hitter stood out as one of the top bats at the event. Hits from a balanced stance, leg kick trigger, ball jumps off his barrel, creates lift at contact, projects to hit for power as a middle of the order type bat, 88 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran 4.34 down the line. Shows soft hands and works through the baseball well, good body control, arm strength plays well on the left side of the infield at 85 mph, could make the move to third base at the next level, has made steady and impressive strides in overall game, committed to Southeastern Illinois following the event.

Jaxson Blair, 2B/OF, Lexington Christian Academy, 2016
5-foot-11, 155-pound prospect has the athletic ability to play multiple positions. Right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, line drive type hitter with gap to gap approach, loose hands generate above average bat speed, 86 mph exit velocity off the tee, good round of BP, runs well, 4.35 down the line. Arm strength stands out defensively, 81 mph across the infield, 90 mph from the outfield, high-3/4 release, moves with athletic actions at both positions, displays body control, versatile player with ability to play multiple positions at the next level.

Matthew Olson, SS, DuPont Manual HS, 2016
5-foot-10, 155-pound prospect impressed with athleticism and arm strength. Right handed hitter hits from an open stance, squares up with a short stride, showed a mid to opposite field approach in BP, ability to make hard contact to the right-center gap, solid bat speed, 86 mph exit velocity, ran 4.42 down the line. Stood out defensively with athletic actions, soft hands, good body control on slow roller with ability to throw on the move, 87 mph arm strength across the infield plays well on the left side, has a very good chance to remain at SS at the next level.

Chandler Dunn, 2B, Henry Clay HS, 2016
5-foot-8, 160-pound prospect, right-handed hitter hits from an open stance and gets to square with a controlled toe tap, maintains good balance through contact, level swing path with solid line drive production, likes to hit to the opposite field, 82 mph exit velocity, ran 4.50 down the line. Very solid defender at 2B, soft hands with good lateral movement and body control, accurate throws with a quick release and ability to throw from multiple arm slots, 75 mph velocity across the infield, projects as very good defender at the next level.

Blake Redmon, 2B/RHP, Franklin County HS, 2016
5-foot-9, 165-pound right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, line drive type hitter with ability to use all fields, short/compact swing, impressed in BP with ability to consistently square the baseball, 85 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran 4.59 down the line. Shows soft hands defensively, moves well laterally in both directions, made some accurate throws from a high-3/4 release, 76 mph velocity across the infield (78 previous best), solid defender at the 2B position.

Corner Infielders

Gordon Lovensheimer, 1B, Holy Cross HS (Covington), 2016
6-foot-3, 200-pound prospect with large frame, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance with a short stride, level swing path with occasional length, shows some strength in swing with occasional flashes of power, 77 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran 4.70 down the line. Shows sold hands defensively, adequate footwork and movement around the bag, limited arm strength at 62 mph.

Catchers

Ian Bach, C, Owens Community College
Bach is a 5-foot-9, 185-pound catcher who graduated from Covington Catholic HS in 2014. He began his college career at Tiffin University and is now playing at Owens Community College and will be looking to transfer to a four-year school after this spring. Right-handed hitter hits from an open stance and squares up with a short stride, short swing path and generates good bat speed though the zone, shows flashes of gap to gap power, has added significant strength since high school and it shows, registered 91 mph exit velocity, ran 4.65 down the line. Very solid receiver and blocker behind the plate, very quick transfer and release, quick footwork that stays online, made solid throws to the bag, 74 mph arm strength, pop times ranged from 1.88-1.95.

Max Cole, C, Fairdale HS, 2016
5-foot-7, 150-pound right-handed hitter impressed with athleticism and arm strength. Right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, minimal load, has quickness in hands that generates bat speed, line drive type hitter with a mid to opposite field approach, squared several balls in his round of BP, 83 mph exit velocity off the tee, showed plus speed running an event best 4.06 down the line. Big arm strength behind the plate at 82 mph, solid receiver, has room for quicker release, pop times ranged from 1.94-2.00.

Braden Kopp, C, Scott County HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitter with athletic frame, hits from a balanced stance, loads back smoothly with no stride, short swing path, line drive type hitter with a gap to gap approach, 82 mph exit velocity off the tee, ran 4.72 down the line. Showed 74 mph arm strength from behind the plate, has a longer release, does a good job keeping footwork online allowing for mostly accurate throws, footwork has room to be quicker, pop times ranged from 2.25-2.32 and will improve with quicker footwork and release.

Outfielders

Seth Johnson, RHP/OF, Franklin-Simpson HS, 2016
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitter has continued to make impressive strides in his game and has emerged as one of the top uncommitted prospects in the state. Hits from a wide, slightly open stance and squares up with a short stride, slight wrap in load but gets through the zone with good hand-quickness, shows gap power, personal best exit velocity at 91 mph off the tee, showed good speed running 4.31 down the line. Shows athletic actions defensively and plays through the ball well, big arm strength at 92 mph from a long high-3/4 release.

Casey Womack, OF, Henry Clay HS, 2016
5-foot-11, 170-pound right-handed hitter impressed with good arm strength and speed. Right-handed hitter hits from an open stance and squares up with a short stride, good balance throughout contact, short swing path that produced consistent line drives in his round, works middle to opposite field well, 82 mph exit velocity off the tee, showed good speed running 4.34 down the line. Shows athletic defensive actions and plays through the ball well, long over the top release produced throws of 86 mph, athleticism and arm strength could allow him to play all three outfield spots at the next level.

Austin Olds, OF/RHP, Chatham Kent Secondary (ON), 2016
5-foot-10, 170-pound prospect certainly impressed with combination of speed and arm strength. Right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, uses lower half well, has quick hands that generate good bat speed, line drive type hitter with flashes of gap to gap power, 88 mph exit velocity off the tee, shows plus speed running 4.15 down the line. Very good arm strength at 89 mph from a long ¾ release, good overall athleticism.

William Morgan, OF, Boyd County HS, 2016
6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect with strong/athletic frame, right-handed hitter hits from a balanced stance, short stride, average balance, good strength in swing, short swing path and shows flashes of power, 81 mph exit velocity was slight increase from previous event, ran an improved 4.59 down the line. Average athleticism in the outfield, showed 82 mph arm strength from a long, over-the-top release while playing through the ball.
