2023 East Coast Pro: Quick Hits, Day One

David Seifert
Director of College Scouting

The Director of College Scouting at Prep Baseball Report and D1Baseball.com, David Seifert, helped ignite our 2024 MLB Draft coverage by traveling to Hoover, Ala., to take in this year's East Coast Pro event, which precedes the Area Code Games out west where our own Shooter Hunt is stationed currently, witnessing the underclass portion of the event. Seifert will be breaking down the top takeaways from each day of ECP, beginning with the Day One coverage you'll find below...

In advance of the round-robin gameplay, all position players were laser-timed in the 10, 30, and 60-yard sprints. Blistering the field in the 60 was '24 OF Dante Nori (Northville HS, MI) who jetted an event-low 6.24 time. Somewhat close behind were '24s OF Cole Cleveland (Calvary Christian Academy, FL; FIU commit) with a 6.46 time and the uncommitted Nelson Zapata, Jr. (Rocky River HS, NC), who ran a 6.47. Taking home the gold in the 10-yard dash was Vanderbilt recruit INF Brodie Johnston (Boyd Buchanan School, TN, 2024), while Nori darted out to a 3.48 to take the top spot in the 30.

Each of the prospects listed below are members of the Class of 2024. Now, onto game action…

Padres 10, Athletics 9

– The Padres wasted little time taking control of the day’s first game with an impressive first inning. RHP Dane Moehler (Walton HS, GA; Clemson) tossed a three up, three down frame moving his 90-93 mph fastball around the zone while mixing in a changeup, 80-83, and curve, 76-78. He repeated his on-line delivery, filling the zone and forcing contact. The Clemson recruit also showed the ability to manipulate his breaker into a fourth offering, a slurve up to 80 mph. In the bottom half of the first, INF Rustan Rigdon (Metter HS, GA) blasted a two-out triple to right field with an exit velocity of 97 mph. His three-bagger was followed up by more hard contact; a line-drive RBI single by OF Kyle Boylston (St. Johns County Day, FL; Florida Atlantic) and another liner at 96 mph by Tennessee recruit C Levi Clark (Walton HS, GA).
