The 2024 high school baseball season is quickly approaching and as usual, excitement abounds throughout the state.  Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Louisiana.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Sulphur, LA, home of the LHSAA State Championships, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality.  We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Louisiana.  We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, followed by our Power 25 Rankings release, and our popular Game of the Week segment.

Team Outlook

South Terrebonne finished the 2023 season with an overall record of 21-10-1, in what was their first year competing in the newly formed LHSAA Non-Select D-I playoffs.  The Gators and a few other "Class 4A" teams were required to compete with other Class 5A schools come playoff time.  In 2022, South Terrebonne was one of the better stories of the high school baseball season, as they made an improbable underdog run to win their first state title in program history.  Head Coach Mike Barba and company are eager and excited to get going this season, as they returning six starting position players and two pitchers from a year ago.  One of the veteran returners that they're excited to have back is senior OF Drew Pitre.  The 5'7" 140 lbs. uncommitted senior packs a big punch in a smaller frame and is a guy that is "more than the sum of his parts".  The "Pitre" name may be familiar to Gator fans, as Drew is the younger brother of Shea, who was one of the stars on the '22 team's state title run, and is now at Baton Rouge Community College.  Senior Cole John will also be roaming the outfield with Pitre for another season.  John is an uber-athletic right-handed hitting outfielder that covers a lot of ground in the outfield and is ultra-competitive.  Behind the dish, South Terrebonne also returns senior Drake Detillier, who is a physical right-handed hitting backstop that plays the game the right way and handles the pitching staff extremely well.  In the middle of the order, opposing teams will once again fear the bat of senior Logan Mallard.  The Nicholls State signee is a physical left-handed hitter at 5'11" 290 lbs. and has next-level pop.  Junior Brayden Clement may have the most tools on this team to play at the next level.  He had a really good sophomore campaign and Coach Barba believes he will build on that to have an event better junior season.  On the mound, junior Ian Bowen is a guy that the coaching staff is really excited about, thanks to his projectable 6'1" 150 lbs. frame and live arm.  District 7-4A has quietly turned into one of the most competitive districts in the state with the likes of Lutcher and Vandebilt Catholic, who both won state titles just two years ago.  This year's South Terrebonne team has enough key pieces returning, especially on the offensive and defensive side of things to have another really good season.  If the pitching comes together at the right time, then we could definitely see the Gators making a deeper run in the playoffs in 2024.
