Game of the Week - Walker vs. St. Amant

Alex Armand
Louisiana Scouting Director

Our Week 3 Game of the Week between Brother Martin and Parkview Baptist did not disappoint, as the Eagles took down the Crusaders, by a score of 5-4.  In our first three weeks, our Games of the Week have been decided by 1 run, 3 runs, and 1 run, respectively.  We hope that continues in Week 4, as we have a clash of top tier teams in 5A.  St. Amant is always known for having tough, hard-nosed, gritty baseball players that compete.  Walker has similar players, but have been a "surprise" team, so far in 5A, and are ranked #4.  Below, we take a look at the key players for each team, ahead of tomorrow night's matchup at 6:30 PM.

Walker High School

Record: 12-2

Current 5A Ranking: #4

Key Wins: West Monroe, Franklinton

Runs Scored: 107 (7.6 runs scored/game)

Runs Allowed: 31 (2.2 runs allowed/game)

Senior RHP Grant Edwards has pitched his fair share of big games throughout his career for Walker and we expect to see him starting on the mound tomorrow night.  Edwards has compiled a 2-0 record this year over 19 IP, giving up 14  H, 9 R, 4 ER, 15 BB, and 23 K's.  In an earlier start against West Ouachita, he threw a no-hitter in 5 IP.  Pounding the zone has been an issue at times this year for Edwards, but when he has thrown strikes he has been very effective.  Offensively, the Wildcats have a dynamic lineup with both speed and power, and it starts at the top with Senior Camden Carver (LSU-Alexandria Signee).  Carver is .421 on the season with 2B, 7 R, 10 RBI, and 10 BB.  Senior Gabe Inman is also hitting at a .421 clip and Senior Spencer Murray is hitting .351 with HR, 2 2B, 3B, 7 R, 10 RBI, and 11 BB.  Junior Caleb Webb has also been a run producer in the middle of the order hitting .295 with HR, 4 2B, 3B, 11 R, 12 RBI, and 6 BB.

St. Amant High School

Record: 11-3

Current 5A Ranking: #6

Key Wins: Zachary, Denham Springs

Runs Scored: 110 (7.9 runs scored/game)

Runs Allowed: 44 (3.1 runs allowed/game)

St. Amant had a hot start this spring, as they got off to a 9-1 start with their only loss coming against St. Paul's.  The Gators dropped two games this weekend against Brother Martin and Jesuit and are looking to get back on track against the Walker Wildcats Tuesday night.  We expect St. Amant to roll out Senior Slade Zeppuhar on the mound.  The RHP has compiled a 3-1 record over 19.1 IP, giving up 11 H, 3 R, 2 ER, with 4 BB and 26 K's.  Zeppuhar also has 10 RBI and 8 runs scored at the plate.  Offensively, it is no secret who the Gators biggest weapon is with Junior Lee Amedee (University of Louisiana Commit), who was also a 2020 PBR Future Gamer.  The LHH 3B has gotten off to a great start this spring by hitting .450 with 2 HR, 4 2B, 2 3B, 17 R, 9 RBI, and 13 BB.  That is what makes Amedee so dangerous in the leadoff spot.  He understands the strike zone and doesn't swing at pitches out of the zone.  Senior Josh Denton has also began his senior campaign nicely.  The 2B is hitting .415 with 4 2B, 3B, 16 R, 12 RBI, and 7 BB.
