METAIRIE ̶ On Tuesday the Prep Baseball Report Louisiana staff headed out to Mike Miley Stadium, as No. 5 John Curtis high school faced off against St. Paul’s high school.
2019 RHP Jacob Scherer, a Louisiana State commit, got the start on the mound for St. Paul’s. A strong, bulky 6-foot-3 right-hander, Scherer sat 81-84 mph with cutting action on his fastball. Although he struggled with command at times, walking six in four innings of work, Scherer held a potent Patriot offense in check by striking out seven batters.
Down 1-0 after two innings, St. Paul’s would plate two runs in the top of 3rd, ultimately taking the lead for good. 2018 IF Caleb Lupo would start the frame off with a hard single up the middle, as 2018 2B Jordin LaBruzza could not complete the throw after a diving backhand stop. Lupo would then swipe back to back bases. 2019 SS Beau Neelis would then bring Lupo home on a line-drive single to left field. Jacob Scherer singled to right, putting runners on the corners. 2019 C Kyle Conigliaro would then send a ground ball to 2018 SS Brandon Davis, but a good slide would force the turn throw from LaBruzza high, allowing Neelis to score from 3rd base.
2018 RHP Ian Landreneau (John Curtis), was sharp in his first relief outing of the season for the Patriots. Sitting 82-84 mph with his fastball, Landreneau commanded three pitches for strikes. In three innings of work, Landreneau struck out six batters, allowing 0 runs, 1 hit, while walking none.
2017 3B William Heurtin, a Rhodes College recruit, would collect the lone hit off Landreneau, a loud double to right-center.
2018 SS Brandon Davis would collect the only hit for John Curtis, fighting off a fastball with two strikes into right field. 2018 1B Cade Beloso, a Tulane recruit, would draw walks in his three plate appearances on the night.
