As expected there was only a few players from the state of Maryland selected this year during the MLB Amateur Draft. Much of the reason is the Maryland prospects either were set on going to their respective colleges or needed those year to better develop for when they become eligible in three years.

The first Maryland HS player taken off the board was in the 17th Rd. in Archbishop Spaldings LHP Tyler Blohm, putting the cherry on top to an amazing 2016 so far for the young pitcher. Blohm worked hard over the offseason, cleaning up his mechanics and making his delivery much more efficient and effective. He pitched this spring in the 85-88 mph range, topping out for us at 89 mph and was reportedly as high as 91 mph this spring. With that also became much improved secondary pitches that show potential down the road and increased his stock. Blohm finished at No. 4 in our final 2016 rankings.

The second Maryland HS player taken was 3B/RHP Matt Mervis of Georgetown Prep. Mervis was taken in the 39th Rd. by the Washington Nationals. The legitimate two-way talent will be hard to pry away from Duke University but will be one to keep an eye on in three years down the road.
