3.5.16 - 3B/RHP Matt Mervis (Georgetown Prep, MD) faced Calvert Hall HS, MD, in a recent doubleheader, getting eight plate appearance across the two games and pitching the second. The Duke recruit went 0-for-4 with four walks and squared up two balls that the center fielder had to make acrobatic plays on. He had two other fly outs to left, spinning off the ball at the plate. One turned into an error. On the mound, he was 87-90 mph throughout, touching 91 once in each inning. His slider had shorter action early, but show bigger, late break in the later innings. It sat 77-81. His changeup was 82-84. He also showed better command of his slider later. He was a bit rusty in the first, giving up two hits, but settled in and gave up just one hit after that. He finished a run allowed on three hits and two walks in four innings. He struck out seven.
2.7.16 - Mervis impressed both as a position player and pitcher at the Super 60 Pro Showcase. The Duke recruit showed nice infield actions and clean hands from the infield and will be an option at either corner infield position. At the plate Mervis showed good rhythm with an easy swing and a ball that jumped off his bat. On the mound Mervis sparked more interest with his simple delivery, throwing 88-90 mph with easy effort. His slider showed potential with short break at 81-83 mph and a change up with dive on the pitch up to 84 mph.
5.19.15 - 2016 Matt Mervis pitched for Georgetown Prep and sat 86-91 in five innings of work. Physically mature with strong frame at 6-foot-3 225-pounds. Attacked hitters with his fastball and elevated as well. Showed changeup at 80 mph. Arm strength is present and looks to have some more in there.
3.31.15 +Although Matt Mervis did not get a hit on the day, the 2016 Duke commit had nice at bats and showed off plenty of his talent. Mervis had good balance in his stance with quick hands and some pop in his bat. Was a bit pull happy at the plate but still had some juice on a few of the balls he hit. Had nice footwork around the bag at first base and displayed lateral quickness and quick twitch on balls hit to his side. Showed a good exchange and quick feet when runner broke to second on a pick-off attempt. Made accurate throws from position with good arm strength.
2/29/20: The Blue Devil senior first baseman and right-handed reliever showed some serious bat speed from the left side during my looks in Minneapolis. At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds Mervis can unleash the bat head in a hurry. At times he recognized pitches late, but nevertheless was able to limit the swing/miss and put the ball in play, finishing the tournament 3-for-11 with a home run and three RBI. As a two-way talent also capable of pitching in the low 90s, expect Mervis to easily be considered in the top 10 rounds as a money saving senior. If I were still an area scout, Mervis would be towards the top of my gut feel prospects. (Seifert)
8/19/19: Faced two batters during a relief appearance. Fastball sat 92-93 and mixed in a below average, loose rotating 79 mph slider on this look. During an earlier look by Nick Faleris, Mervis sat 91 with his fastball over 1.1 innings, recording four outs on 12 pitches. Showed two offspeed offerings, both looked like split changes at 80 mph. During a late look by Aaron Fitt, Mervis sat 90-92 and touched 93-94 with a fairly high spin rate up to 2545 rpm. He also flashed the makings of a solid-average slider at 81-83 with tight spin at times, up to 2400 rpm. He needs to finish the pitch more consistently, but it’s a legitimate out pitch when it’s on.
