Matt Mervis struck out seven in five innings, giving up one run and allowing five hits leading Georgetown Prep to the 6-1 victory over Landon in the IAC Championship.
Prep got the scoring started in the second inning after Landon starter Randy Bednar loaded the bases to start the inning with two walks and a hit-by-pitch. RBI singles by Zach Seal and Harry Flannery gave Georgetown Prep the early 2-0 lead. The Little Hoyas would add another in the third, fifth, and then score two in the sixth to extend their lead to the 6-1 final.
Landon could not get the big hit they needed as they had runners in scoring position in multiple innings. A majority of the strikeouts that Mervis collected were in these situations, leaving 10 Landon runners stranded on base. Andrew Ashur came on in relief in the sixth inning and got five of his six outs via the strikeout to finish the game off.
Mervis relied on his fastball challenging the Landon hitters. The powerful righty pitched at 86-89 in the game and got as high as 91 in the early innings.
Garrett Zoukis was the lone spark in the Landon lineup getting two hits and knocking in the only Bears run of the game in the bottom of the third. The Little Hoyas used a team effort as Seal, Flannery, Mervis, Evan Blum, and John Dempsey all had an RBI each.
