Commitment Analysis Class of 2016: Matt Mervis

Now that we are getting closer to the second Wednesday of November and the early signing period for the class of 2016, PBR Maryland will begin breaking down select player commitments across the state. 

Matt MervisWith the first edition of for the 2016 class, there is no better place to start than at the No. 1 spot in the PBR Maryland State Rankings, Matt Mervis. The power hitting first baseman / right-handed pitcher was a key factor to Georgetown Prep getting back the championship of the IAC in 2015 and will once again play a major role in their attempt to repeat. Mervis has decided to play his college ball in Durham, North Carolina for Coach Chris Pollard at Duke University in the tough Atlantic Coast Conference. 

Scouting Report

+Physically mature with strong frame at 6-foot-3, 225-pounds. Hits from a slightly open set up with rhythm. Level bat path with quick hands and fast bat speed. Can get long at times. Big pull side power threat from the left side and should translate to all fields. Active feet at first base and moves well at the position. Soft hands with clean exchange and transfer. Throws have life from a ¾ arm slot. On the mound has a controlled delivery throwing from his high ¾ arm slot. Pitches at 86-91. Changeup has sink at 80 mph. More in the tank with nice durable frame.

Outlook

+Mervis has spent most of this summer playing in top tournaments across the country from the Tournament of Stars to this weekend at the Metropolitan Baseball Classic. For the Blue Devils, Mervis looks to be a middle of the order type of hitter in the lineup. Should be an instant power presence in the lineup and will run his share out of the park. Will provide sound defense at first base. Would not be surprised if he gets a few chances on the mound as well with his frame and arm speed. Mervis looks to be an exciting prospect for the Blue Devils starting the spring of 2017.
