Archbishop Spalding got a strong pitching performance from starter Zach Thompson as they defeated the Gilman Greyhounds by a score of 5-3 to capture their third straight MIAA ‘A’ Conference Championship on Wednesday night at Loyola.

Spalding wasted no time getting the bats going as Lavale Hodges, Barrett Smith and Carter Sears each had an RBI double in the top of the first.  Gilman’s John Fitzgerald would help the Greyhounds respond with an RBI groundout to make the score 3-1 after one.

Gilman would push their second run across with another RBI from Fitzgerald, this time a single to pull within one run through three at 3-2. Spalding answered back in the fourth after OF Billy Godrick was plunked with two outs and came around to score on David Harding’s triple to left field. Thompson maintained the lead at 4-2 in the bottom half.

Spalding added an insurance run in the sixth from a Godrick single through the left side of the infield to bring home Tyler Blohm, who led off the top of the frame with a double to right center. Gilman was able to add a run in the bottom of the seventh after Pierce Bennett’s two out RBI single to right field. With the winning run at the plate, Thompson induced a loud fly out to center field that Godrick secured for the final out of the game.

Thompson went the distance for Spalding, allowing just two earned runs on four hits.  The Cavaliers’ first four batters in the lineup produced seven of the team’s ten hits as Godrick, Harding and Smith each had a multi-hit game. For the Greyhounds, Fitzgerald led the way with two RBI’s while Isaiah Braxton and Emmanuel Engermann also reached base twice.
