Close to 30 uncommitted players from the 2020 - 2022 graduating classes came to Salisbury University this year for the PBR Maryland Top Prospect Games East. Tons of talent was on display as each player participated in a pro-style workout and game in front of college coaches from around the region and our PBR scouting staff. Below is an analysis of each of the middle infielders at the event. Top Prospect Games East: Middle Infielders

 

Michael Burton, Jr. 2B / 3B / Atholton, MD / 2020

Strong, solid body type and 5’8’’, 180 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, square, slightly crouched stance at the plate with hands held low at chest level. Smooth rock back load with a medium sized leg kick and some hand separation. Explosive lower half involvement, quick hands and fast bat speed. Short, slightly uphill swing path. Swings with intent, and gets good extension finishing strong with one hand. Gap-to-gap type hitter with pop. Recorded an 88 mph exit velocity. Plays with active feet in the infield and showed a good, low, athletic set-up to the ball. Surrounds the ball and works through it with soft hands. Throws from a mid three-quarter slot with short arm action at 78 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.18 60-yard time.


Coleman Calabrese SS / 2B / Archbishop Spalding, MD / 2021

Athletic, lean body type and projectable 6’0’’, 165 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance at the plate. Small leg kick load and good hand separation. Short, quick, easy stroke. Showed some lower half involvement, quick hands and quick bat speed. Slightly uphill swing path and showed excellent balance in the box throughout the swing with good extension and a strong finish. Line drive type hitter that uses the entire field and showed power to the gaps. Recorded an 83 mph exit velocity. Athletic and rangy in the infield. Plays with active feet and moves very well. Surrounds the ball and works through it with soft hands and quick, clean exchanges. Throws from a low three-quarter slot with slightly longer, loose arm action at 76 ph across the diamond. Clean actions on double play feeds to second and made plays on slow rollers with ease and excellent body control. Ran a 7.60 60-yard time.


Ryan Corbin RHP / SS / Kent Island, MD / 2021

Long, lean, athletic body type and projectable 6’1’’, 165 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, open stance at the plate. Small leg kick load and good hand separation. Front foot lands in-line with the pitcher. Short, direct, slightly uphill swing that has a tendency to get level at times. Average lower half involvement, quick hands, and quick bat speed. Showed nice extension through contact and used the entire field well. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter with some pop. Recorded an exit velocity of 82 mph. Plays through the ball at shortstop with fundamental footwork and an athletic set-up. Showed quick, clean exchanges and throws with shorter arm action from a mid three-quarter slot at 78 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.62 60-yard time. 


Cy Harwood SS / 2B / Huntingtown, MD / 2020

Strong, solid, athletic body type and 5’11’’, 175 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate. Medium sized leg kick load and creates good hand separation. Front foot lands in-line with pitcher at foot-strike. Explosive lower half involvement, quick hands, and fast bat speed. Swings the bat with intent and controls movements well. Stays behind the ball very well and showed good extension and a strong follow through. Gap-to-gap type hitter with some present pop. Smooth, clean actions in the infield. Athletic set-up and plays with active feet. Showed some range and works through the ball with soft hands. Stays low on double play feeds to second. Throws with short arm action from a mid three-quarter slot at 82 mph. Ran a 6.97 60-yard time.


Jackson Merrill SS / 2B / Severna Park, MD / 2021

Athletic, lean body type and 6’0’’, 150 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, slightly open stance from the left side. Smooth back load with a small knee-to-knee leg kick. Creates some hand separation and attacks the ball with intent. Explosive lower half involvement with a short, slightly uphill swing path. Quicks hands and creates fast bat speed through the zone. Stays behind the ball well with good extension and a strong finish. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter with some pop. Uses the whole field very well and recorded an exit velocity of 83 mph. Athletic and rangy in the infield. Plays with good rhythm and active feet. Surrounds the ball and works through it to first base. Throws with longer arm action from a low three-quarters slot at 80 mph across the diamond. Smooth, clean transfers on double play feeds and slow rollers. Ran a 7.20 60-yard time.


Chase ODell SS / 2B / Great Mills, MD / 2020

Athletic body type and projectable 6’1’’, 170 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate. Smooth back load with a short knee-to-knee stride and sometimes toe tap. Explosive lower half involvement and a short, level swing path to the ball. Showed quick hands and creates fast bat speed through the zone. Stays behind the ball well with good balance, extension and a one-handed finish. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter with some pop. Recorded an exit velocity of 86 mph. Athletic set-up and moves well showing some range in the infield. Fields the ball out in front and funnels to chest. Throws with shorter arm action from a high three-quarters slot at 76 mph across the diamond. Showed the ability to make throws from various arm angles as well. Ran a 6.87 60-yard time.


Garrett Southern 2B / RHP / James M. Bennett, MD / 2020

Athletic body type and 5’10’’, 160 pound frame. Hits from a balanced, slightly crouched, slightly open stance at the plate. Short back load and small stride. Creates good hand separation. Strong lower half involvement with a short, compact swing. Slightly uphill swing path with quick hands and fast bat speed. Stays behind the ball well with a nice middle of the field line drive approach. Gap-to-gap line drive type hitter with some pop. Recorded an exit velocity of 84 mph. Athletic and rangy in the infield. Moves well and plays through the ball with active feet. Funnels ball to belt and throws with loose arm action from a mid three-quarter slot at 80 mph across the diamond. Clean, smooth double play feeds to second base and showed the ability to throw from various arm angles. Ran a 7.33 60-yard time.


Luke Waters SS / 2B / Delmar (DE), MD / 2021

Athletic body type and 5’11’’, 165 pound frame with room to grow. Hits from a balanced, square stance at the plate. Strong base and lower half involvement. Creates some hand separation and showed a short, slightly uphill swing path with quick hands and bat speed through the zone. Stays behind the ball well and gets good extension through contact. Uses the whole field and stayed gap-to-gap with line drives while showing some pop. Recorded an 86 mph exit velocity. Athletic and rangy in the middle infield. Plays with active feet and moves very well. Works through the ball and fields it out in front. Smooth, clean actions turning the double play and on slow rollers. Throws with short arm action from a high three-quarter slot at 87 mph across the diamond. Ran a 7.13 60-yard time.
