JUCO The Right Path For D1 Commit Horner
Gavin Homer SS / 2B / Battle Creek Lakeview, MI / 2016Rankings StateRank: 75 / POS: 12
BATTLE CREEK - Junior college has proven to be the perfect path to take for Gavin Homer. With no Division I offers out of Battle Creek Lakeview High School in 2016, Homer elected to attend Kellogg Community College. Now a sophomore, Horner will have a new home to play college baseball once this school year ends after committing to Penn State. “The main thing that stood out was the academic and athletic reputation combined,” Homer said of his decision to attend the Big 10 school. “They have a newer coaching staff that’s trying to establish a program and they told me I could be an impact player to build around.” That is quite a compliment for someone who received only a small amount of Division I interest in high school. “I tried to attend as many PBR showcases as I could,” Homer reflected. “I put videos together to showcase my swing and from the showcases I had contact with all levels, JUCO, D-I and D-II. Unfortunately, I never received a D-I offer. I didn’t want to just settle for any program, so I decided junior college was the way to go. It was a pathway to get to a higher competition school and program.” |
