OLSM and East Grand Rapids Split Twinbill

Orchard Lake St. Mary’s traveled to Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids to take on East Grand Rapids.  East Grand Rapids took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.  Leadoff hitter Sam Boeve reached on an error which was followed by a throwing error on an ensuing pickoff attempt advanced Boeve to third, where he was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Andrew Zawacki.  From that point forward, the game would be all St. Mary’s, as Greg Loukinen (4 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 7 K’s) and Joe Giacalone (1 IP, 0 ER, 0 H, 0 BB, 2 K’s) combined to throw a no-hitter.  St. Mary’s took a 3-1 lead after the 1st.  St. Mary’s would add single runs in the 2nd and 4th, and three runs in the 3rd and 5th to complete the 11-1 mercy rule victory.

St. Mary’s was led offensively by Will Salter (Michigan State) who was 3-3 with 3 runs scored and Devin Rose (Wayne St.) who was 2-4 with 2 2B.  Jimmy Marx also went 2-2.

The night cap began as a pitcher’s duel between St. Mary’s Conor Bowers (Army) and Joel Dayton from East Grand Rapids.  Dayton worked through some trouble early in the 1st when he picked off Drake Titus from 2B ahead of a Will Salter single that would’ve plated an early St. Mary’s run.  Bowers worked around a Noah Salasky single in the first, and retired East Grand Rapids in order in the 2nd.  East Grand Rapids broke through for two runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning without registering a hit.

J. Dayton lead off the 4th with a double which was followed by a single by Ryan DaytonJennings then laced a single up the middle scoring both Dayton’s and extending East Grand Rapids lead to 4-0.  East Grand Rapids would add two more runs in the 5th on a triple by R. Dayton, which scored Salasky and J. Dayton making the score 6-1 and that would be the final score.

J. Dayton finished with 4 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K  to get the win. Nathan Kamradt would get the save working the final 3 innings surrendering 2 runs, only one of which was earned, while striking out 4.  East Grand Rapids was led offensively by R. Dayton who was 3-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored.
