Metropolitan Baseball Classic: Day 3 Notebook

By Nathan Rode

NEW YORK CITY—The 2016 Metropolitan Baseball Classic has completed three days and the championship is set with Team Elite, winner of the 2013-2014 editions, facing the Evoshield Canes. The rematch of the 2013 championship will be at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Citi Field. In the third-place game is FTB Tucci and SACSN National, while the fifth-place game is between Chet Lemon’s Juice and Show California Baseball.

The third day of action was quite bizarre with all three games ending in a tie. Team Elite and SACSN were deadlocked at 1-1 as were FTB Tucci and Show California. The Canes and Chet Lemon’s Juice had a 2-2 score after seven innings.

The highlight of the Saturday’s first game was RHP Nick Storz (Poly Prep Country Day School, NY). A Louisiana State recruit, Storz is a big Mets fan and Poly Prep is less than 25 miles from Citi Field. It was a special experience for him, as he got to pitch on his favorite team’s field and put up a strong performance. He went six innings, allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out 10. He started out sitting 90-92 mph with his fastball and was 89-90 in the fifth inning. He had arm-side run to his fastball and relied heavily on his slider for swings and misses. It was mostly 76-78 with sharp lateral break, but was slurvier by the end of his outing. He also mixed in an average curveball at 73-75 with 10/4 shape. Storz has an easy delivery and threw 59 of his 90 pitches for strikes.
