PBR Spotlight Game: Stoney Creek vs Rochester

Shelby Township- This District Semifinal had the makings of a low scoring affair when it was announced that 2015 Notre Dame commit Eric Gilgenbach would be toeing the rubber against 2015 Toledo signee Jake Stout at Eisenhower High School.

The first inning saw Stoney Creek steal a run on a 1st and 3rd early break, as Gilgenbach would score from 3rd as base runner Jordan Skidmore was able to draw a throw to 2nd from Stout.

This wouldn’t stop the Falcons from answering in the bottom half as a one out double from 2015 Mitchell Weber would score Kevin Mahan all the way from first.

The score remained 1-1 heading to the second inning.

Gilgenbach and Stout would both put up zeros for the next five innings.

The Stoney Creek right-hander at one point would set down eleven straight Rochester hitters, looking completely dominant with his 62-65 mph curveball, which he was able to throw in just about any count to any Falcon hitter. His fastball was working well at 81-85 mph, as he was able to locate it for the majority of the game. 

Rochester right-hander Jake Stout’s fastball was 83-85 mph. He showed a sweeping breaking ball that kept Stoney Creek hitters off balance, and a very good changeup that he was comfortable throwing in big situations.

The top of the 6th saw Stoney Creek push across its second run on a controversial tag play at the plate on a single to center off the bat of Josh Niederhauser.

A couple baserunning mistakes would hurt the Cougars as they had multiple chances to tack on a few more and break the game open. Rochester again tied the game up in the bottom half, scoring on a passed ball, and the two teams headed to the 7th knotted up at 2.

Stoney Creek threatened in the top half, but Stout managed to escape with no damage after a diving play to the end the inning by the Falcon first baseman. 

In the bottom half, a hit-by-pitch and intentional walk would put 2 runners on for leadoff hitter Thomas Loftus. Loftus would come through with a line shot to center field, giving the Falcons the walk-off win, taking take them to the District Championship game.
