Wagoner At Peace With Playing Ball In College

TECUMSEH - It took some time to finally decide, but Cameron Wagoner is fulfilling his commitment to Eastern Michigan.

“Baseball is not going to last forever,” Wagoner reasoned as to why he selected college over signing a professional baseball contract with the Texas Rangers. “This makes it easier in the long run.”

The fourth-ranked 2019 in the state of Michigan was selected by the Rangers in the 22nd round of the MLB Draft back in June. It was nearly a month later that the 6-6 190-pound right-handed hurler made his decision - college or pro ball.

“I sat down with my parents and talked about it,” the recent Tecumseh graduate reflected. “I went to my room one day and went through my head all my past outings. I thought it all through. Is this pitch ready for the next level? I decided I needed extra time to grow.

“Sitting with my mom and dad and talking with my summer coach, we figured out what was best for me. What’s best for one guy is not for the next.”

The decision did not diminish the excitement of being the 655th pick in the 2019 draft.

“I was watching at home,” Wagoner noted. “We were in districts that day and Chris with the Rangers texted me. He said we’ll call you in the next couple rounds. I had started getting ready for the game and was putting in my contacts.”

There were more calls that followed the selection.

“The Eastern coach congratulated me and my advisor called,” Wagoner said. “Everything kind of blew up then. It was a dream come true. My mom took the day off of work to be with me. It was definitely one of the best moments in my life. It’s something you dream about when you’re a little kid, but you don’t think you’ll be that kid.”

The Yankees, Royals, Marlins, Pirates and Cubs all communicated with the hard-throwing right-hander over the past number of months.
