Williams Looking Forward To Finding A College Home

GRAND BLANC - Watching an older brother’s athletic endeavors left Trey Williams wanting to do the same.

“I’ve wanted to play college baseball since I was young,” the Grand Blanc High School junior said. “My brother played college baseball and I always looked up to him as a baseball role model.”

There was a lot to learn from his older sibling, Jackson Williams, who was part of the program at Muskegon Community College.

“I’ve never been a big guy but I’ve really worked to get where he was,” Williams explained. “It took me a while to grow, I’ve just tried to trust the process.”

It is starting to pay off, with the 5-10 185-pounder beginning to get interest in his quest to find a home at the next level.

“Right now I’m hitting camps and getting on campus with schools showing interest to see what’s the right fit for me,” the second-ranked 2025 catcher in Michigan noted.

His recruitment has, admittedly, had peaks and valleys.

“Going to camps has been big for me, but the Future Games was a huge part of my recruiting, getting it up and going,” Williams related. “It was a chance to play the best talent in the country allowing me to show how I stack up against that.

“There were ups and downs, I just tried to stay true to who I was. I found some barrels, had a couple walks and caught well behind the plate.”

Come Aug. 1, the 17-year-old heard from college coaches.

“There were a lot of emails about camps, DMs on twitter and a couple that reached out on the phone,” Williams reflected. “There haven’t been any visits but I talked with a couple about going in mid-January and early February.”

The 46th-ranked junior in the state is quick to point out what he is doing to improve.

“My focus is on putting my body in the best position possible by hitting weights, while trying to get mentally ready for the upcoming season,” Williams said.

Improvement has already helped him get to this point.

“I’m getting more comfortable with myself as a player,” Williams noted. “I’ve gotten bigger and stronger, more physically dominant than I was a couple years ago.”

An impression has been made on those he has been in contact with during recruitment.

“They really like me behind the plate,” Williams said. “They see that I’m able to move well with my body. They like me offensively and think I can help them out.”

The 28th-ranked uncommitted 2025 in Michigan believes he can be a major asset to a college program.

“I feel I’ll be the hardest worker in the room every time,” Williams explained. “I only plan to make a college commitment for four years once, so wherever I end up I’m not leaving once I get there.”

Adam Goodwin, Prep Baseball Michigan Director of Scouting, likes what he has seen.

“Trey is a true competitor between the lines when it’s time to go, someone that features reliability behind the plate,” Goodwin noted. “Trey has continually gotten better each time we’ve seen him from the spring at Grand Blanc to the Top Prospect Games to the Future Games.”

A majority of the interest has been from Division I schools according to Williams.

“There have been some high points with coaches constantly reaching out and then some slow weeks when I’m reaching out to keep my name in their minds,” Williams said. “I’m just looking for a good place that wants me for me. I want to get there, make a commitment and help them out to the best of my ability. I’m not afraid to fight for a roster spot.”

Sports medicine, physical therapy and athletic training are majors being considered by Goodwin, a 3.62 student ready to find a place to be a student-athlete in college after his days at Grand Blanc come to an end.

“Our high school winter workouts are starting to build back up,” Goodwin explained. “We’re hoping to make a run at a state championship with two D-I players on the team. I think my recruitment will take care of itself with that.

“When the time’s right and I see it as a good fit I’ll make a commitment. I’m eager for it to end but I want to be sure and not rush it out of emotion. It’s going to be my home for four years.”
