Future Games Intrigue

Just weeks away from the summer’s premier event, the 2020 PBR Future Games, rosters are starting to take shape, and talented uncommitted underclassmen are filling up spots. This week, in an initial scan of some of the rosters, On the Hunt highlights some players of intrigue that college coaches will want to circle as follows throughout the event.

Aubrey Smith RHP / 1B / South Brunswick, NC / 2022

Smith still shows signs of adding some strength and maturing though he already sports a solid frame at 6-foot-2, 195-pounds. The big right-hander was up to 90 mph at a May workout for PBR North Carolina, and there is likely more on the way as his arm continues to get in shape, and the lower-half gains more strength. Up to 90 mph while sitting 86-89 with some arm side life, Smith puts together a simple, well-balanced delivery before a loose, continuous arm stroke delivers out of a ¾ slot with quickness. He remains linear down the mound with normal effort out front, and possesses some feel for three different secondary offerings including a sinking changeup (77-79) thrown with fastball arm speed, and two distinct breaking balls: slider (72-76) and curveball (68-71). Both pitches are thrown with intent with the firmer slider taking some sharper sweeping action while the curveball exhibits more depth. The aptitude for spin is present, and being that this bullpen was early in the summer, a jump is a likely possibility down the road. Adding to his upside on the mound is Smith’s ability to swing the bat from the left side where he showcases some athleticism with fast hands and power potential. Overall, Smith has a durable frame in the making, and with multiple pitches for strikes, and above average current velocity, there is lots to like about him moving forward, especially for college coaches looking for a starter profile.
