The PBR MN Prospect ID- Mankato event took place on Tuesday, July 9, 2019. The event was held at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato, MN. The event featured prospects from the 2020 - 2023 grad classes; and included many breakout performances from this year's participants. Players showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and college coaches in attendance. Thank you to the players, parents, my staff; along with Coach Ryan Kragh from Bethany Lutheran College for such a great event.

There were a number of great individual performances this year at the PBR MN Prospect ID- Mankato event.

pitCHER EVALUATIONS (ALPA)

Matthew Barker, RHP, Anoka, 2020
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed throwing pitcher.  Compact frame.  Small rocker step into balance position.  Simple and quicker tempo delivery.  Good balance and lands across body down mound.  Some effort to release.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.  Fastball has varying action with stiffer release thrown at 72-73 mph topping at 74 mph.  Curveball has early 11/5 break thrown at 62-65 mph.  Change-up is average thrown at 65-66 mph.

Ethan Beltrand, 2B/RHP, Princeton, 2020
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.58 runner.  Relaxed slightly open stance.  Body and hand load.  Strides to square.  Flat swing plane with a short finish.  Gap to gap approach with line drive and fly ball contact.  Consistent contact and flashed pop in barrel.  84 mph exit velocity.  IF- Overall raw defensively.  Sits back to field.  Glove comes out late and is stiff.  Average accuracy with below average carry on 71 mph arm strength.  On mound- Rocker step in to balance point.  Good tempo through delivery.  Stays tall down mound and into release.  Short arm action from a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball has down hill varying action at 71-74 mph topping at 76 mph.  Curveball flicks and has small 11/5 break thrown at 58-60 mph.  Change-up is 65-66 mph with average feel and spiked at times.

Wesley Brand, LHP/OF, East Ridge, 2020
5-foot-10, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.20 runner.  Slightly open balanced stance.  Body load back with toe tap trigger.  Stays open through swing.  Flat swing plane and pushes barrel through zone.  Mid/oppo approach with line drive and fly ball contact.  Pull hook at times.  Inconsistent barrel contact with 84 mph exit velocity.  OF- Average feet to field.  Good glove and fields through ball clean.  Shorter arm action.  80 mph arm strength with average carry and accuracy.  On mound- Rocker step into balance point.  Slow tempo into leg lift and quicker tempo to release.  Good balance and direction down mound.  Swings open to land down mound.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball has some life for strikes at 77-79 mph topping at 80 mph.  Curveball has 1/7 break with average shape and spin that lands for strikes at 64-67 mph.  Average feel for change-up thrown at 71-73 mph.

Taylor Chase, RHP/OF, Eden Prairie, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.09 runner.  Open crouched stance.  Leg lift and strides to square.  Small hand load.  Bigger movements and aggressive swing.  Flat swing plane with slight lift.  Mid/pull approach with line drive and fly ball contact.  Average contact and flashed pull pop in barrel.  84 mph exit velocity.  OF- Average feet and attacks ball on ground.  Glove fields ball clean.  Longer arm action.  79 mph arm strength with average accuracy and below average carry.  On mound- Threw from stretch.  Starts from closed set into quicker tempo down mound.  Effort through release.  Throws from a high ¾ arm slot.  Fastball is 81-82 mph topping at 83 mph.  Curveball has late 10/4 break with tight spin at times thrown at 73-74 mph.  Change-up has inconsistent feel at 74-76 mph.  

Marcus Hoffman, RHP, Minnetonka, 2020
5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed throwing pitcher.  Average build and mound presence.  Threw from stretch.  Balanced set into leg lift.  Quicker tempo down mound.  Lands across body and tends to fall off glove side.  Throws from a higher ¾ arm slot.  Fastball has downhill varying action thrown at 82-84 mph topping at 85 mph.  Curveball is thrown with average spin and shape at 68-70 mph with 11/5 break and average depth.  Change-up has varying action at 75-76 mph thrown with average feel. 

Luke Johnson, C/RHP, Mankato West, 2022
5-foot-7, 155-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player.  8.02 runner.  Balanced athletic stance.  Body load and toe tap with hand load down to start.  Flat swing plane with a short finish.  Ground ball and line drive contact.  Average barrel contact with 81 mph exit velocity.  C- Slightly open balanced stance and sits high.  Shows ability to hold pitches with average glove.  Average exchange and can be longer.  Feet have good direction.  2.21-2.30 pop times.  Longer arm action with below average carry and average accuracy.  73 mph exit velocity.  On mound- Threw from stretch.  Simple leg lift to balance point.  Lands and throws across body.  Falls off glove side.  Fastball is straight with slight run for strikes at 76-77 mph topping at 78 mph.  Curveball has early 11/5 break for strikes at the bottom of strike zone at 64-65 mph.  Change-up is inconsistent at 68-70 mph. 

Evan Koss, RHP, Osseo, 2020
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed throwing pitcher.  Average build.  Rocker step into turn and rolls leg lift into balance point.  Quicker tempo with good direction down mound.  Throws from a low ¾ arm slot.  Fastball is thrown at 78-79 mph topping out at 80 mph with run and sink.  Curveball is 62-65 mph and drops elbow and hooks release.  Change-up is firm with cut action thrown at 72-74 mph. 

Griffin Leiner, RHP, Minnehaha Academy, 2020
6-foot-3, 190-pound right-handed throwing pitcher.  Bigger projectable frame.  Rocker step into balance position.  Hands come over the top in delivery.  Good balance and direction down mound.  Lands across body at times.  Arm works from a ¾ arm slot with clean arm action and good extension out front.  Fastball is 86-87 mph topping at 89 mph with some life to it.  Curveball has 11/5 break with average spin thrown at 70-73 mph.  Change-up has average feel thrown at 76-80 mph. 

Louis Magers, RHP/SS, Mankato West, 2022
6-foot-3, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.31 runner.  Projectable frame.  Balanced squared stance.  Body load back with leg lift and hands load down.  Aggressive swing and flashed bat speed.  Good swing plane with slight lift.  Mid/pull approach with ground ball and line drive contact.  Average contact and flashed pull pop.  87 mph exit velocity.  IF- Good actions.  Feet move well to field.  Above average glove and fields ball clean.  Quicker release.  76 mph arm strength with average carry and accuracy.  On mound- Long frame with room to fill out.  Rocker step in to balanced position.  Good tempo and direction down mound.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot.  Good extension out front.  Fastball is 80-81 mph topping at 82 mph with varying action.  Curveball has slightly lower arm slot with average shape and spin at 69-71 mph.  Change-up is thrown with average feel for strikes at 69-71 mph.  Follow in 2022 class. 

Joey Malecha, OF/RHP, Northfield, 2022
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  6.97 runner.  Athletic build.  Squared stance with high handset.  Body load back with toe tap trigger.  Hand load back into slight arm bar at times. Average swing.  Mid/pull approach with mainly ground ball and line drive contact.  Average contact with some strength in barrel.  80 mph exit velocity.  OF- Good feet to field.  Works through and fields ball clean.  Longer arm action.  87 mph arm strength with above average carry and accuracy.  On mound- Rocker step.  Good tempo through delivery.  Lands slightly across body.  Aggressive down mound.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot with a long arm action.  Fastball is straight with slight run at times thrown at 84-85 mph.  Curveball has tighter 11/5 break almost sliderish at 70-72 mph.  Change-up is firm with solid sink to the bottom of strike zone at 79-80 mph.  Strong follow on mound in 2022 class.

Jacob Petersen, RHP, Rosemount, 2020
6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed throwing pitcher.  Compact frame.  Bigger rocker step into balance position.  Quicker tempo through delivery.  Good balance and direction down mound.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot with average arm action.  Good extension and clean out front.  Fastball is 81-83 mph topping at 84 mph with varying downhill action.  Curveball has tight 11/5 break with average depth thrown at 70-71 mph.  Change-up is 74-76 mph with average action and some feel thrown for strikes. 

Josh Robb, 2B/RHP, St. Peter, 2021
6-foot-2, 152-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.61 runner.  Young long frame.  Open balanced stance.  Body load back with stride to start.  Hand load back with arm bar at times.  Stiffness in swing with a short finish.  Pull approach with mainly ground ball contact.  Inconsistent barrel contact with 80 mph exit velocity.  IF- Choppy footwork and moves better laterally.  Glove is stiff.  Longer arm action to release.  76 mph arm strength with average carry and accuracy.  On mound- Projectable frame.  Rocker step into quicker tempo.  Good balance and direction down mound.  Shorter stride.  Throws from a lower ¾ arm slot.  Fastball is 71-74 mph and straight with push release.  Curveball is flat with cut action and small shape thrown at 66-67 mph.  Change-up is flat with varying action at 66-71 mph. 

Matt Seykora, SS/RHP, Owatonna, 2021
5-foot-8, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.11 runner.  Balanced squared stance.  Stride and small hand load.  Tends to fall to backside during swing.  Flat swing plane and short finish.  Pull approach with ground ball and line drive contact.  Inconsistent barrel contact with 74 mph exit velocity.  IF- Average feet and works around ball to field.  Average glove and can get stiff at times.  Makes routine play.  78 mph arm strength with average carry and below average accuracy.  On mound- Threw from stretch.  Good balance and direction down mound.  Throws from a higher ¾ arm slot with a short arm action.  Tends to rush.  Fastball is straight at 72-73 mph topping at 74 mph for strikes.  Curveball has average shape and spin thrown at 62-64 mph.  Change-up has stiff release with average action at 66-67 mph. 

Tanner Shumski, 1B/RHP Mankato West, 2022
6-foot-1, 225-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.89 runner.  Big frame.  Slightly open balanced stance.  Body load back with some rhythm.  Toe tap trigger.  Flat swing plane and works down to contact at times.  Mid/pull approach with ground ball to fly ball contact.  Average contact and flashed some strength in barrel.  86 mph exit velocity.  IF- Longer footwork and sits back to field.  Glove works and fields ball clean.  73 mph arm strength with average accuracy and fade carry.  On mound- Big mound presence.  Rocker step into balance position.  Good tempo and balance through delivery.  Good direction down mound.  Throws from a lower ¾ arm slot with easy arm action.  Fastball is 83-84 mph for strikes and some sink.  Curveball spins with minimal break at 77-79 mph.  Change-up is thrown with good arm action at 76-77 mph. 

Tyson Sirek, OF/RHP, Eden Prairie, 2020
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  6.97 runner.  Closed stance with high handset.  Weight starts forward and body load back.  Toe tap trigger with long down to up hand load.  Arm bar at times creating length to contact.  Flat swing plane.  Pull approach with ground ball and line drive contact.  Average barrel contact with 80 mph exit velocity.  OF- Athletic feet and footwork into throws.  Average gl0ve and fields through ball.  83 mph arm strength with average carry and accuracy.  On mound- Big rocker step into swing leg lift.  Average tempo through delivery.  Good balance and lands slightly across body.  Long arm action from a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball is 81-83 mph topping at 84 mph with some run and life.  Curveball has bigger 11/5 shape with average spin for strikes at 66-69 mph.  Change-up has cut action and firm at 76-78 mph. 

Nathaniel Tillman, RHP/3B, Anoka, 2020
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.18 runner.  Squared balanced stance.  Small leg lift and minimal hand load.  Lower half gets through swing.  Flat swing plane.  Middle approach with line drive and fly ball contact.  Average barrel contact with 82 mph exit velocity.  IF- Attacks ball and feet can be heavy.  Stiff hands at times and glove can be late.  Short arm action.  78 mph arm strength with average carry and accuracy.  On mound- Threw from stretch.  Open set.  Leg lift into balance position and good direction down mound.  Shorter stride and backside falls through.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball has decent life thrown at 78-79 mph.  Curveball has tighter spin and 11/5 break with average feel thrown at 68-70 mph.  Change-up has average action with some feel at 69-71 mph. 

Braydon Yost, RHP, Rosemount, 2020
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed throwing pitcher.  Athletic frame and room to fill out.  Rocker step into leg lift.  Closed at balance point and swings open down mound.  Quicker tempo and good balance.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot.  Fastball has life with varying action thrown at 85-87 mph topping at 88 mph.  Curveball has sharper 11/5 break with average depth thrown at 69-71 mph.  Change-up is 76-78 mph with average feel.

Isaac Wenzel, LHP, Minnetonka, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound left-handed throwing pitcher.  Average frame.  Threw from stretch.  Slightly closed set position.  Good tempo to balance position.  Quick tempo down mound to release.  Swings and lands open down mound.  Off balance at times.  Throws from a high ¾ arm slot with slinger arm action.  Fastball is 80-81 mph with varying action.  Curveball has sharp 1/7 break thrown at 68-71 mph.  Change-up is thrown down in the zone with average feel at 70-74 mph. 

Matthew Werk, SS/RHP, Mankato East, 2022
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player.  7.09 runner.  Open balanced stance.  Some rhythm in load.  Small body load and strides to square.  Flat swing plane and average swing.  Mid/pull approach with ground ball and line drive contact.  Consistent barrel contact with 83 mph exit velocity.  IF- Average actions.  Feet move well to field.  Good glove and sure hands.  Short quick rm action.  80 mph arm strength with average accuracy and good carry.  On mound- Rocker step into turn.  Good balance and tempo through delivery.  Good direction down mound.  Throws from a ¾ arm slot with short quick arm action.  Fastball is 80-81 mph topping at 82 mph with slight down hill action.  Curveball has 11/5 break with tighter spin thrown at 71-74 mph.  Change-up is thrown with average arm speed with feel for strikes at 72-75 mph.
