Western Wisconsin Open: Outfielder Analysis

On July 9, the PBR Wisconsin team made the trip from the Badger State Battle in Mauston, Wis., westward to Eau Claire, the site of the annual Western Wisconsin Open showcase. Immediately following the event, we published our Quick Hits and Statistical Analysis posts, but this week is reserved for our position-by-position analysis. 

On deck today is the event’s outfielders, after we broke down the day’s catchers yesterday. Check out the complete scouting reports on the 11 outfield prospects listed below. Stay tuned tomorrow when we evaluate the infielders who made it to Eau Claire.

ALL PROSPECTS (LISTED ALPHABETICALLY)

Matteo Bonnin, OF, Hudson, 2021
6-foot-2, 185-pound, left/left outfield prospect with athletic, lean frame, some projection. An event-best 6.87 mark in the 60. At the plate, wide and slightly open base, balanced setup, strides to even. Loads back into arm bar, fast bat speed on a level path, line-drive approach with barrel feel; 82 mph exit velo from the tee. On defense, athletic feet, short and loose arm action from high ¾ slot, 81 mph high to home. 

Mason Dado, RHP/OF, St. Croix Central, 2021
5-foot-11, 185-pound, right/right two-way prospect. On the mound, simple/repeatable motion, high knee lift to balance point, drop-and-drive type, works on line, level shoulders, with toe-open landing. Long arm action from high ¾ slot, quick arm speed. Fastball, straight four-seam type, sat 81-82 mph; touched an 84 and an 85 mph with his last two pitches. Curveball, 11/5 shape, above-average action with feel, 68-70 mph. Changeup, mostly maintains arm speed, arm-side run/fade, 73-77 mph. Slider, similar to curve, tighter/later action, 69-70 mph. At the plate, tall setup with some bend at the knee, low hand set, leg hang trigger into long stride. Bat path is long and level, 78 mph exit velo from the tee. On defense, athletic approach and gather, quick and clean transfers. Long and loose arm action, present arm strength, carry to home, topped 85 mph. A 7.28 runner in the 60.

Zachary DeMarce, OF, Menomonie, 2020
5-foot-4, 160-pound, left/left outfielder with strong/athletic build. A 7.21 runner in the 60, athletic gait. At the plate, balanced setup, short leg lift stride, brief load back. Bat path is short and uphill, above-average bat speed, loud off the barrel; 84 mph exit velocity from the tee. On defense, athletic routes, clean transfers. Arm action is long, loose; topped 75 mph to home.

Teddy Donna, RHP/OF, Hudson, 2020
5-foot-10, 160-pound two-way prospect with lean/athletic frame. On the mound, right-handed, rhythmic rocker into athletic and fluid knee lift and high front side, long stride down mound, athletic landing. Arm action is loose and clean, quick arm speed, high ¾ slot. Fastball, slight run, 77-79 mph. Changeup, slight arm deceleration, firm, 73-76 mph. Curveball, inconsistent but flashed sharp 11/5 action, 67-71 mph. At the plate, right-handed, pre-pitch rhythm, wide base, drops hands into bar load, long and uphill path with extension in finish; 91 mph exit velocity from the tee. On defense, athletic and fluid footwork, long transfer, long and high ¾ arm slot with carry to home; 79 mph high to home. A 7.15 runner in the 60.

Tru Dupee, OF, Ladysmith, 2020
5-foot-10, 165-pound outfielder/infielder with strength in lower half. On offense, balanced/open setup, some pre-pitch rhythm, arm bar load. Bat path is short and direct to the ball, level plane, 81 mph exit velocity from the tee. Ran a 7.38 in the 60. In the infield, fields it deep, long arm action from high ¾ window, 79 mph high to first. From the outfield, two-hand gather, long arm action, high ¾ slot, topped 80 mph.

Andrew Gehm, LHP/OF, Green Bay Preble, 2022
5-foot-7, 150-pound two-way prospect with small/athletic frame, some strength throughout. A right-handed hitter, balanced/athletic setup, long stride, minimal load. Quick bat speed, short and level bat path, line-drive/pull-side approach, consistent barrel feel; 82 mph exit velocity from the tee. On defense, athletic fielding position, controlled approach and gather to the ball, arm action is long and over-the-top; topped 70 mph to home. A 7.80 runner in the 60. On the mound, left-handed, side rocker, early draw, level shoulders, works on-line. Arm action is long, loose, quick from high ¾ window. Fastball, demonstrated control, slight run, 71-73 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape with depth, 62-64 mph. Changeup, mostly maintains arm speed, some fade, 64-65 mph.

Blaine Guthrie, C/RHP, Baldwin-Woodville, 2021
6-foot, 190-pound two-way prospect with strong, thick build. At the plate, right-handed hitter, wide/open base, hands set high, short stride to square. Hands drop into long and uphill path, quick bat speed with premium bat strength, loud on contact, extension through the baseball with power potential; 83 mph exit velo off the tee. Defensively, stays tall, long arm action, high ¾ slot, pop times ranged from 2.10 to 2.16. Throws feature some carry, 75 mph. On the mound, tall/fall type, long draw, long arm action and high ¾ release, short stride to target, square landing. Fastball, some downhill tilt, carry through zone, 79-82 mph, touched 84 mph. Curveball, some feel to spin, 11/5 action, 65-68 mph. Changeup, decelerates arm speed, some fade, 64-67 mph. A 7.82 runner in the 60.

Kevin Kaczrowski, RHP/OF, Pulaski, 2021
6-foot, 155-pound, right/right two-way player. At the plate, tall/open setup, hands set high, drops into load, short stride to even. Bat path is long on an uphill plane; 79 mph exit velocity from the tee. On defense, two-hand gather, long arm action from high ¾ slot; topped 70 mph to home. A 7.65 runner in the 60. On the mound, brief side rock into high knee and hip turn, level and on-line to home. Long arm action from ¾ slot. Fastball, slight run, 71-73 mph. Curveball, gradual action with 10/4 break, 59-63 mph. Changeup, straight, 62-64 mph.

Kyler Reps, OF/RHP, Saint Charles (MN), 2020
6-foot-4, 190-pound two-way prospect with tall/lean frame. A 6.91 runner in the 60. At the plate, right-handed, tall/balanced setup, minimal load, short stride. Short and fast path to the ball, some extension through finish, raw power potential; 86 mph exit velocity from the tee. On defense, short and loose arm action from high ¾ slot, topped 77 mph to home. On the mound, methodical rock into big knee lift, early separation/draw, short stride. Long arm action from high ¾ slot, works in line with shoulders level. Fastball, occasional run, 76-78 mph. Curveball, 11/5 shape with some depth, early and gradual action, 58-61 mph. Changeup, mostly maintains arm speed, straight/slight arm-side action, 63-68 mph.

Ryan Traas, OF, Sheboygan North, 2021
5-foot-11, 170-pound outfield prospect with wiry, athletic frame. At the plate, right-handed, wide/athletic setup, smooth load back, toe-tap stride. Fast bat, long and level path, opposite-field approach, some gap-to-gap with above-average bat strength; 88 mph exit velo from the tee. On defense, controlled approach to the ball, long arm action from high ¾ slot, topped 80 mph to home. A 7.38 runner in the 60.

Mitchell Zahurones, LHP/OF, Wausau West, 2020
5-foot-10, 158-pound two-way prospect with thin/lean frame. On the mound, wide set, side rocks into high knee lift, works on line, lands square. Arm action is long, quick, and loose from a high ¾ window. Works with some rhythm, fluidity. Fastball, some cut, 74-76 mph. Slider, flashed tight/sharp, 1/7 shape, 66-69 mph. Curveball, similar to slider, more vertical movement, tight spin, 66-68 mph. At the plate, right-handed, upright/open setup, hands set high, pronounced leg kick and bat wrap. Long and mostly level bat path, slight incline; 68 mph exit velocity from the tee. On defense, quick and fluid feet, long and loose arm action from a high ¾ slot; topped 75 mph to home. A 7.68 runner in the 60.
