2.23 St. Louis Preseason All State Analysis: Pitchers

On Sunday, February 23 Prep Baseball Report held the St. Louis Preseason All State Showcase at River's Edge in Florrisant, Missouri. Today we wrap-up the analysis with Pitchers. A talented group of  22 pitchers took part in the event, three left-handers and 19 righties.

Top Pitching Prospects

Chase Hagerty (Cape Central, 2015)
Hagerty is a strong 6-foot-3, 195-pound RHP.  Hagerty posted the top velo of the event, touching 88 MPH.  He showed four pitches in the zone and sat 84-86 MPH with some cut to his fastball.  He has an 11/5 curveball with late break at 73-75 MPH and a change-up at fastball arm speed at 70-75 MPH.  Hagerty showed good feel for a slider at 75-77 MPH with late movement.  He has a ¾ release and a quick arm.  Hagerty throws with regular effort and repeats his mechanics well. 

Jake Lochner (Sullivan, 2015)
Lochner is a lean 5-foot-10, 160-pound LHP. Lochner’s 86 MPH fastball was one of the highest velos of the event.  He sat 84-86 MPH and some command with his fastball that has some sink.  He has a sharp late breaking 2/8 curveball at 68-71 MPH and good command of a change up at 75-77 MPH with near fastball arm speed.  He has smooth rhythm in his delivery with a ¾ release and a quick arm.

Sean McCracken (Marquette, 2015)
McCracken is a strong 6-foot-3, 205-pounds RHP.  He has a ¾ release with a loose arm action  His fastball was clocked between 82-85 MPH, one of the highest for the event.  McCracken also showed good feel for his curveball and change-up.  He has an 11/5 shape curveball with late break at 69-71 MPH and he throws his change-up with late sink at 73-77 MPH.  He throws with regular effort and has a quick arm..

Nic Gauspohl (Timberland, 2015)
Gauspohl is an athletic 6-foot, 150-pound RHP.  Gauspohl sat 79-83 MPH with his fastball and touched 85 MPH, one of the top for the event.  He has a ¾ release and his fastball showed late cut.  Gauspohl has an 11/5 curveball with a sharp break at 71-74 MPH and  a change-up at near fastball arm speed at 73-74 MPH.  He has smooth rhythm during his delivery with loose arm action.  Gauspohl stays in line as he gets down the mound and finishes in an athletic position.

Conner Pomering (Logan-Rogersville, 2015)
Pomering is an athletic 6-foot-1, 165-pound RHP.  Pomring posted one of the best velos of the event with a fastball at 86 MPH.  He throws from a ¾ arm slot and has a loose arm action.  He has an 11/5 curbveball with sharp break and a 72-74 change-up with some fade.   He also showed a splitter at 75 MPH.  He throws with easy effort and has a quick arm

John Hughes (Alton Marquette (IL), 2015)
Hughes is a strong 6-foot-3, 197-pounds RHP.  Hughes was among the top in fastball velo for the event, hitting 85 MPH. He sat at 83-84 MPH with is fastball with some cut.   Hughes showed a 10/4 shape curveball with sharp break at 65-67 MPH and a change at 70-73 MPH with late cut.  He has a ¾ arm slot with free arm action. 

Stephen Clark (Wentzville Holt, 2015)
Clark is a 6-foot, 185-pounds LHP.  Clark was in the strike zone with all three pitches showing a fastball at 80-82 MPH that was consistently down in the zone.  He throws a 2/8 curveball with a late, sharp break at 69-70 MPH and a change at 69-70 MPH with late sink.  He has a ¾ release and very repeatable mechanics that allowed him to spot up his pitches.  He throws with regular effort and a loose arm action.

Austin Bennett (Wentzville Holt, 2015)
Bennett is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound LHP.  Bennett was 80-83 with his fastball and had slight cut.  He showed a 2/8 shaped curveball with a sharp late break at 76-78 MPH and showed good feel for his change-up at 74-75 MPH.  He throws with a ¾ release and has loose arm action with regular arm speed.   Bennett lands in line to his target and finishes in an athletic position.

Matthew Blake (Parkway West, 2016)
Blake is a strong 6-foot-2, 210-pound RHP and showed good command of his 80-82 MPH fastball.  Blake has an 11/5 curveball with sharp break at 70-72 MPH and a change-up at 76-79 MPH thrown with near fastball arm speed.  He has a high ¾ delivery and throws with regular effort.  Blake has a quick arm and stays in line as he gets down the mound.

Mitchel Brown (Homeschool, 2015)
Brown is a 6-foot-2, 185-pound RHP.  Brown sat 80-82 with his fastball and 70-72 with his curveball.  He had late run on his fastball and a 11/5 breaking ball with late break thrown at near fastball arm speed. He throws his chang-up at 73-74 MPH with some sink.  He has a 3/4 release with regular arm speed.  He stays in line as he gets down the mound and has good rhythm to his delivery. 

Matt Campbell (Lafayette, 2015)
Campbell is a 5-foot-11, 165-pounds RHP.  Campbell was in the strike zone with all three pitches.  He has a high ¾ delivery with sound mechanics.  His fastball was clocked at 74-79 MPH with late cut.  Campbell threw his curveball at 63-64 MPH and showed a change up at 68-70 MPH.

Steven Deckard (Francis Howell North, 2015)
Deckard is 6-foot-1, 190-pound RHP. Deckard showed good command with his fastball and change-up.  His fastball had slight run at 80-83 MPH and his change-up has some sink at 70-72 MPH at near fastball arm speed.  He showed a curveball at 64-66 MPH.  Deckard throws from over-the-top with easy effort and a quick arm. 

Tyler Kuhlmann (Francis Howell Central, 2015)
Kuhlmann is an athletic 6-foot-1, 190-pound RHP. Kuhlmann was 80-84 MPH with his fastball and showed good command with his off speed.  He showed a 12/6 curveball with late break at 67-69 MPH and a change-up at 71-72 MPH at near fastball arm speed.  He has an over-the-top delivery and throws with regular effort. 

Leo Lunatto (Hazelwood West, 2015)
Lunatto is a 6-foot-2, 200-pounds RHP.  He showed good command of a fastball between 78-81 MPH.  Lunatto throws an 11/5 curveball with near fastball arm speed at 59-63 MPH and has a 62-66 MPH change-up with slight sink.  He throws from a ¾ arm slot stays in line as he gets down the mound.  He throws with regular effort and falls off to fist as he lands. 

Ty Lumley (Fair Grove, 2016)
Lumley is a solid 5-foot-9, 170-pound RHP.  Lumley has a high ¾ release and throws with regular effort.  His fastball was clocked at 78-81 MPH with slight run and he showed a 12/6 curveball with late break at 68-73 MPH.  Lumley’s change-up was had slight fade at 67-73 MPH.  He starts in an upright position and shows good ability to repeat his delivery. 

Matthew McCauley (Vianney, 2015)
McCauley is 6-foot, 185-pound RHP.  McCauley was 79-80 MPH with his fastball and 63-67 MPH with his curveball that had a sharp break.  He showed a change-up with at near fastball arm speed at 71-72 MPH.  McCauley has a ¾ release and a loose arm action.

Isaac Olson (Chaminade, 2016)
Olson is a projectable 6-foot-6, 187-pounds RHP.  He sat at 77-79 with his fastball that had slight run.  Olson has a plus curveball with a 12/6 shape and late break thrown at 63-71 MPH.  His change-up is thrown with near fastball arm speed at 68-70 MPH.  He throws from a high ¾ arm slot and gets good down-angle tilt on his pitches.  Olson has loose arm action that will allow him to add velo as he develops.

Michael Puckett (Hazelwood West, 2015)
Puckett is a solid 6-foot-1, 220-pound RHP.  Puckett’s fastball was clocked between 73-76 MPH with a high ¾ release.  He showed good command of an 11/5 curveball with late, sharp break at 66-68 MPH. Puckett threw his change-up at 68-72 MPH.  He has a controlled balanced back leg and throws with regular effort.

Ben Stephens (Warren County, 2015)
Stephens is a lean 6-foot-1, 162-pound RHP.  Stephens showed good command for three pitches in the zone.  His fastball was at 82-83 MPH with slight cut. He showed an 11/5 shape curveball with sharp, late break at 70-72 MPH and a change-up with cut at 73-75.  He has a high ¾ delivery with a loose, quick arm.  He has good rhythm in his delivery and repeats his mechanics well. 

Mark Vierling (CBC, 2017)
Vierling is an athletic 5-foot-10, 153-pound RHP.  Vierling showed well for the 2017 class, with a fastball between 75-79 MPH with late cut.  He has a 12/6 curveball between 58-60 MPH with sharp break and a change-up at 67-71 MPH at near fastball arm speed with some sink.  He has an over-the-top arm slot and loose arm action.  Vierling throws with easy effort and stays in line as he gets down the mound.

Logan Winder (Farmington, 2015)
Winder is an athletic 5-foot-11, 175-pound RHP.  Winder throws with an over-the-top arm slot and has fluid rhythm during the delivery.  He has a fastball at 81-83 MPH and a 12/6 curveball with late break at 66-68 MPH.  The throws his change-up at near fastball arm speed at 69-73 MPH.

Tommy Zoellner (CBC, 2015)
Zoellner is  a strong 6-foot-5, 230-pound RHP.  He threw his fastball at 81-83 MPH with slight run and showed an 11/5 curveball with late break at fastball arm speed at 73-75 MPH.  His change-up was clocked at 71-71 MPH with some sink.  Zoellner has a high ¾ arm release with a loose arm action.  He throws with regular effort and stays in line as get down the mound.  He finishes in an athletic position.
