Bi-State Winter Open ID: Middle Infielder's Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri/Kansas held the Bi-State Winter Open ID Showcase on Saturday, February 20 at Prodigy Baseball Academy in Parkville, Missouri.  The event featured over 50 players from the Missouri and Kansas area in the 2016 to 2019 classes.

Player's profiles have been updated with times, velos, videos and profile pictures. We will take a look at each position, looking at the middle infielders today.  Although some middle infielders worked out in other positions, this is just a look at the performances as a middle infielder. Players are listed in alphabetical order below.

Middle Infielders

Cameron Chick, 2B, Hickman (MO), 2018
Chick is a 5-foot-9 165-pound switch-hitting second baseman Missouri’s 2018 class from Hickman HS in Columbia.  He ran a 4.19 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 82 mph from the left side and an 88 mph exit velo from the right side. At the plate, starts in an athletic stance, smooth load, no wasted movement, short stride, quick bat speed, loose hands, gap-to-gap approach, similar swing from both sides. On the infield, 77 mph positional velo, short high three quarters release, fluid footwork, athletic actions, arm works. 

Jason Gonzalez, SS, Lee’s Summit North (MO), 2018
Gonzales is a 6-foot 190-pound left-handed hitting second-baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 4.50 home-to-first and has 88 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts loaded in back leg, short and quick stride, no hand movement, quick hands, swing produced line drives to the middle/pull side of cage, strong hands.  On the infield,  77 mph positional velo, quick catch and release, three quarters arm slot, plays through the ball, quick feet. 

Ryan Houseman, SS, Hickman (MO), 2018
Houseman is a 5-foot-10 right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2018 class from Hickman HS.  He ran a 4.66 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 78 mph. At the plate, smooth load from an athletic position, no wasted movement, in-line stride, level path though the zone, showed feel for the barrel with line drives to middle of the cage, repeats swing.  On the infield, 80 mph positional velo, high three quarters arm slot, athletic footwork, gains momentum towards 1B, clean transfer.

Eion Jones, SS, Francis Howell Central, 2019
Jones is a 5-foot-8 140-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class from Francis Howell Central HS.  He ran a 4.76 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 77 mph.  At the plate, athletic set up, short stride, gap-to-gap approach with most being line drives to pull gap, showed some power to pull side.  On the infield, high three quarters release, quick catch and throw, 73 mph positional velo, fluid actions with projectable build. 

Collin Krewson, SS, Parkway West (MO), 2019
Krewson is a 5-foot-11 150-ppund right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class from Parkway West HS.  He ran a 4.21 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 71 mph.  At the plate, repeatable swing with smooth rhythm and loose hands, athletic set up, in-line stride, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 69 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fluid footwork, plays through catch, quick release with clean transfer, lean frame with projection.

Will Larson, SS, Webb City (MO), 2018
Larson is a 5-foot-10 164-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2018 class from Webb City HS.  He ran a 3.96 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 80 mph.  At the plate, starts loaded in back leg with quick hand load, open stance, consistent solid line drives gap-to-gap, body under control.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, gains ground through the ball with footwork, quick exchange, fluid actions.

Wyatt Larson, 2B, Staley (MO), 2018
Larson is a 5-foot-10 150-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2018 class from Staley HS.  At the plate, athletic stance, smooth load, accelerates though contact, level bat path, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 68 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, feet create momentum to throw, fluid exchange and quick release. 

Nick Little, SS, Lee’s Summit (MO), 2016
Little is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2016 class from Lee’s Summit HS.  He ran a 4.35 home to first and has an exit velo of 87 mph.  At the plate, controlled stride and load, level path through ball, solid consistent contact with line drives gap-to-gap.  On the infield, 73 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, loose arm, quick footwork, fluid exchange, hands are in sync with feet, fluid actions. 

Jordan Long, SS, Lee’s Summit West (MO), 2017
Long is a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2017 class from Lee’s Summit West HS. Long ran a 4.63 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 84 mph.  At the plate, balanced set up, stride is closed, quick hands, slightly up hill bath path, hit most ball to pull side in batting practice.  On the infield, 70 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fluid catch and throw, fields ball in athletic position with momentum through the catch.

Sam Robinson, SS, Desoto (KS), 2016
Robinson is a 5-foot-8 165-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2016 class from Desoto KS.  He ran a 4.94 and has an exit velo of 64 mph.  At the plate, balanced set up, smooth load into back leg, minimal hand movement, consistent line drives to middle of cage.  On the infield, high three quarters release, quick release, works behind ball and through catch, 70 mph positional velo.

Charlie Stuart, 2B, Kirksille (MO), 2017
Stuart is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2017 class from Kirksville HS.  He ran a 4.51 home to first and has an exit velo of 78 mph. At the plate, balanced stance, minimal stride, smooth load in upper body, loose hands, gap-to-gap line drives, repeats swing.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, short high three quarters release, quick release with fluid footwork.

Ethan White, SS, Buhler (KS), 2017
White is a 5-foot-10 14-pound right-handed hitting catcher from Kansas’ 2017 class from Buhler HS.  He ran a 4.60 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 80 mph. At the plate, thin and open set up, open stride, loose hands, body stays under control during swing, consistent hard contact middle to pull side. On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, high three quarters release with momentum towards the 1B, fluid footwork with clean transfer.
