Daily Roundup: April 9 Games

No. 1 Westminster 8   No. 7 Rockwood Summit 9
Rockwood Summit hung on to knock of the new No. 1 Westminster in a game where Rockwood Summit scored six runs in the first inning on three hits and the ball taking a few funny bounces, endured a Westminster rally, and ultimately scored the winning run on an error, which seemed a fitting way for this game to end.

In the first, Summit batted around the order, Nick Bamvakais’ two RBI single and Nick Miller’s two RBI double got the scoring started. Combined with a bases loaded walk to Rudy May and a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Fritz, Summit pushed six runs across the plate.

Westminster slowly chipped away at that lead. Brett Bond delivered an RBI double in the second inning and came around to score on a fielder’s choice groundout, and back-to-back doubles by Bryce Bell and Shane Benes in the third cut the lead to 6-4. Westminster would get another run back in the fourth inning after Collin Einerston walked, advanced to second on a fielders choice groundout and came around to score on an error, closing the gap to 6-5

In the bottom half of the fifth, Summit tacked on two more runs on a Matt Kaysinger two RBI double over the center fielder’s head, putting Summit up 8-5.

Not to go away quietly, Westminster plated three runs in the top of the sixth inning to knot the score at 8-8. After a leadoff double by Bond (his second of the game), Einerston came through and delivered an RBI single, and a Kyle Kinner two run scoring double to left center drove home Einerston and Andrew Colgrave, who reached on an error.

In the end, Summit and their small ball would prevail. After a leadoff single by Tommy Ellis and a sacrifice bunt by pinch hitter Jeremy Theiman, Jared Corbett hit a hot shot at the Westminster shortstop, who overthrew first base allowing Eliis to score the winning run.
