Michael PlassmeyerAlthough Michael Plassmeyer isn’t currently flashing the big velocities of some other top-ranked 2015 prospects, the 6-foot-3, 175-pound LHP from De Smet HS has quickly established himself as one of the more projectable pitching prospects in the Midwest.

After enjoying a breakout sophomore campaign at De Smet, Plassmeyer has continued to thrive this summer and fall, culminating in a stellar showing last weekend in Iowa. Plassmeyer helped lead the St. Louis Gamers to the Kernels Foundation Tournament championship by earning two victories on the mound, including a 1-0 complete-game masterpiece against Hitters Baseball in the semifinals.

All told, Plassmeyer yielded only one run in 12 innings work and struck out five. For his efforts, he shared the tournament’s Most Valuable Pitcher honors with his brother, Mitchell, a 2014 left-hander who is committed to Kansas State. Mitchell earned the victory in the championship game.

Plassmeyer is a strike-thrower who commands the zone with three pitches, including a low-80s fastball.

“I think he will be a mid-to-upper-80s guy before long,” said Gamers coach Matt Whiteside. “He locates very well. He throws his secondary stuff for strikes very well for a young pitcher.”

Plassmeyer established himself as a big-game pitcher as a sophomore at De Smet. He posted a 5-1 record with two complete games and a 1.13 ERA. In 43.1 innings, he struck out 39 and walked nine.

Whiteside said Plassmeyer has drawn considerable interest recently, including the likes of Missouri, Missouri State, Kansas State, Arkansas and Arkansas State, to name a few.
