Kansas Preseason All State: Corner Infielder Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Kansas Preseason All-State Showcase on February 12 at Hoover Field in Wichita.  Nearly 50 players in the 2018 class from around the region attended. 

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. Today, we will break down the event position-by-postion, taking a look at corner infielders.  Although some corner infielders participated in other positions, this is just a break down of their performance at corner infield.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Corner Infielders 

Andrew Fox, 1B, Rockhurst (MO), 2018
Fox is a 6-foot-3 224-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.71 laser timed 60 and a 4.69 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo with tall and strong frame.  At the plate, smooth load into back leg, toe tap, in line stride, quick and aggressive swing, swing produced mostly pull side contact with power.  At first base, high three quarters release, moves well to the ball, fluid transfer, 75 mph positional velo.

Connor Hughes, 1B, Olathe North (KS), 2018
Hughes is a6-foot-1 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.71 laser timed 60 and a 4.88 home to first.  He has an 88 mph exit velo. At the plate, does not get cheated and takes an aggressive swing, balanced set up with high hands, controlled load into back side, level and quick bat speed, middle to pull side contact, flashed power.  At first base, 74 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, loose arm action, momentum after the catch, mostly accurate throws. 

Alex Jacobs, 3B, Derby (KS), 2018
Jacobs is a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed hitting third-baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.62 laser timed 60 and a 4.86 home to first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo with a lean frame.  At the plate, some rhythm and slight load in pre-swing, minimal hand movement, short in line stride, swing path is around ball at times, mostly pull side to middle of the cage line drives, body is balanced during swing.  On the infield, 80 mph positional velo, over the top release, long arm circle, smooth footwork working through the ball, clean exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Cody Lucas, 1B, Spring Hill (KS), 2018
Lucas is a 6-foot 185-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.42 laser timed 60 and a 4.44 home to first.  He has a 93 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, controlled leg lift to load, attacks ball with aggressive swing, hands work inside ball, showed power to middle and pull side of cage during hitting evaluations.  On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, quick feet to the ball, quick catch and throw with athletic actions, mostly accurate throws. 

Jack Wagner, 3B, Maize South (KS), 2018
Wagner is a 6-foot 180-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.43 laser timed 60 and a 4.22 home to first.  He has a 90 mph exit velo with a long limbed frame that would suggest a strength increase as he continues to develop.  At the plate, starts open with high hands, has rhythm from pre-swing to load, short bat path to contact, quick and aggressive bat speed, flashed pull side power. On the infield, 83 mph positional velo, short high three quarters release, loose arm action, fluid footwork to the ball, momentum after the catch, clean exchange, accurate throws.

Josh Zellak, 3B, Liberty (MO), 2018
Zellak is a 5-foot-11 195-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.65 laser timed 60 and a 4.66 home to first.  He has n 82 mph exit velo, with a strong frame.  At the plate, tall stance, internal rotation to load, short in line stride, middle of the field approach.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, short three quarters release with clean transfer, somewhat accurate throws.

Austin Zellers, 1B, Andover Central (KS), 2018
Zellers is a 5-foot-11 190-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.80 laser timed 60 and a 4.62 home to first. He has an 88 mph exit velo and a strong build. At the plate, open stand, loads hands, short stride, solid consistent contact during hitting evaluations, repeats swing, hard middle to pull side line drives.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, quick to the ball with feet, quick catch and throw with clean exchanges, accurate throws.
