Kansas Preseason All State: Middle Infielders Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Kansas Preseason All-State Showcase on February 12 at Hoover Field in Wichita.  Nearly 50 players in the 2018 class from around the region attended. 

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. Today, we will break down the event position-by-postion, taking a look at middle infielders.  Although some middle infielders participated in other positions, this is just a break down of their performance at middle infield.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Middle Infielders

Drew Black, SS, Blue Valley Northwest (KS), 2018 
Black is a 6-foot-3 200-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  Black ran a 7.25 laser timed 60 and a 4.53 home to first.  He has a 90 mph exit velo. At the plate, tall and thin set up, drops into legs to load, loose and quick swing, hard consistent contact to middle and pull side, power swing.  On the infield, 86 mph positional velo, high three quarters with a long arm circle, fluid footwork moving the ball, momentum after the catch, mostly accurate throws.

Bryce Boomsma, 2B, Wichita Heights (KS), 2018
Boomsma is a 5-foot-7 155-pound right-handed hitting second-baseman in Kanas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.22 laser timed 60 and a 4.40 home to first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo.  On the infield, open and compact stance, controlled leg lift, in line stride, aggressive swing, has feel for opposite gap, repeats swing.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick footwork, fields ball in athletic position, quick transfer and throw. 

Andrew Brautman, SS, Arkansas City (KS), 2018 
Brautman is a 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Kanss’ 2018 class.  Brautman ran a 7.18 laser timed 60 and a 4.38 home to first.  He has a 92 mph exit velo with a strong and physical build.  At the plate, free and easy swing, aggressive, simple movements, repeatable, loose and quick hands, power to the pull side with consistent contact gap-to-gap.  On the infield, 87 mph positional velo, loose high three quarter release, athletic footwork, fields the ball in position ready to throw, quick transfer, momentum after the catch, accurate throws.

Joseph Costanzo, SS, Rockhurst (MO), 2018 
Costanzo is a 5-foot-11 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.01 laser timed 60 and a 4.51 home to first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo and has a lean and projectable frame. At the plate, balanced set up with a smooth lower half load into back side, feel for the barrel, level path through the zone, swing produced solid and consistent line drives gap-to-gap.  On the infield, athletic actions, 77 mph positional velo, quick and soft hands, quick catch and throw, high three quarters release, made all plays cleanly, accurate throws.

Cade Gonzalez, SS, Arkansas City (KS), 2018 
Gonzalez is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.13 laser timed 60 and a 4.32 home to first.  He has an 88 mph exit velo with an athletic frame. At the plate, balanced set up, slight rhythm pre-swing, some hand load, aggressive and quick bat, loose hands, squared balls up gap-to-gap during hitting evaluations.   On the infield, 83 mph positional velo, works through the ball with athletic footwork, quick transfer and throw, soft hands, accurate throws.

Brody Hanna, SS, Maize South (KS), 2018 
Hanna is a 5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.39 laser timed 60 and a 4.38 home to first.  He has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, wide set up, shifts to back side to load, minimal stride, quick and level bat path, short to contact, gap-to-gap approach, flashed pull side power.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid footwork getting him in position to throw, momentum after the catch, clean transfer, somewhat accurate throws.

Noah Johnson, 2B, Derby (KS), 2018 
Johnson is a 5-foot-10 160-pound left-handed hitting second baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.54 laser timed 60 and a 4.35 home to first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up with some hand load, slightly closed in stride, showed feel for the barrel with solid contact gap-to-gap. On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, long arm circle, fluid footwork with clean transfer, somewhat accurate throws.

Gage Kennedy, SS, Maize (KS), 2018
Kennedy is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.66 laser timed 60 and a 4.51 home to first.  He has a 78 mph exit velo.  At the plate, athletic stance, slight smooth load, loose hands, short stride, mostly middle of the cage line drives in batting evaluations.  On the infield, 73 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, works through the ball, fluid footwork with clean transfer, mostly accurate throws.

Zavier Morin, SS, Gardner-Edgerton (KS), 2018 
Morin is a 6-foot-2 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran 7.64 laser timed 60 and had a 4.63 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo and has a slender/athletic frame. At the plate, balanced stance with smooth load, minimal hand load, small controlled leg lift, in line stride, hands are free and manipulate the bat head, mostly solid contact in the middle of the cage during batting practice.  On the infield, 80 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick catch and throw, quick feet to the ball, loose arm action, mostly accurate throws.

Peyton Niemann, SS, Andale (KS), 2018 
Niemann is a 5-foot-10 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.41 laser timed 60 and a 4.59 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, slight hand load, in line stride, repeats swing, consistent contact to the middle of the cage, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 69 mph positional velo, over the top release, clean exchange, active feet, mostly accurate throws.

Kadin Pearson, SS, Valley Center (KS), 2018 
Pearson is a 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.53 laser timed 60 and a 4.53 home to first.  He has an 81 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, uses loser half to load and for rhythm, loose and quick hands, gap-to-gap approach, aggressive.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, quick footwork to the ball with clean transfer and throw, accurate thrower. 

David Robinson, 2B, Bishop Miege (KS), 2018 
Robinson is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.28 60 and a 4.25 home to first.  He has an 86 mph exit velo and has a physically strong build.  At the plate, balanced stance with leg kick to start swing, minimal load, in line stride, quick and aggressive bat, middle to pull side contact, showing pull side power.  On the infield, 84 mph positional velo, loose high three quarters release, momentum after the catch, fliud footwork to the ball, clean transfer, accurate throws.

Sawyer Slayden, SS, Emporia (KS), 2018 
Slayden is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.40 laser timed 60 and a 4.30 home to first.  He has an 89 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance with rhythm in hands, early toe touch, quick bat speed, mostly middle to pull side line drives during hitting evals, flashing pull side power.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fields ball in athletic position, gains ground to 1B after the catch, mostly accurate throws.

Traiton Suttles, SS, Winfield (KS), 2018 
Suttles is a 6-foot-1 165-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.21 laser timed 60 and a 4.39 home to first.  He has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, fluid rhythm pre-swing, reverse toe tap to load, level path thought the zone, gap to gap approach.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo, over the top release, arm works, athletic footwork, plays through the ball, mostly accurate throws.

Brett Westerman, SS, Derby (KS), 2018
Westerman is a 5-foot-8 155-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.66 60 and a 4.36 home to first.  He has an 83 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance with pre-swing rhythm and high hands, middle to opposite field approach, solid consistent contact, showed feel for the barrel.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, short over the top release, quick to the ball with clean transfer to throw, plays thought the ball, accurate throws.
