Kansas Preseason All State: Outfielders Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Kansas Preseason All-State Showcase on February 12 at Hoover Field in Wichita.  Nearly 50 players in the 2018 class from around the region attended. 

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. In the coming days, we will break down the event position-by-postion, taking a look at outfielders today.  Although some outfielders participated in other positions, this is just a break down of the outfield performance.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

Outfielders

Brett Baker, OF, Blue Springs South, (MO), 2018
Baker is a 5-foot-11 172-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.99 laser timed 60 and a 5.19 home to first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo. At the plate, Baker had middle to pull side contact during hitting evals, open stance with controlled load into back side, minimal movement in hands, short stride, level path through the zone.  In the outfield, 77 mph positional velo, short over the top release, quick transfer, work behind the ball and through the catch, mostly accurate throws.

Jackson Burrell, OF, Spring Hill (KS), 2018
Burrell is a 5-foot-6 160-pound left-handed outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.05 laser timed 60 and a 4.25 home to first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts slightly open with rhythm in hands, short in line stride, compact swing, no wasted movement, quick and level path, loose hands with feel for the barrel, gap-to-gap approach, repeats.  In the outfield, 77 mph positional velo, takes direct route to ball, small crow hop, clean transfer, over the top release, plays through the catch, accurate throws.

Chris Castrop, OF, Rockhurst (MO), 2018
Castrop is a 6-foot-1 175-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a laser timed 7.27 60 and a 4.35 home to first. He has an 84 mph exit velo and has a tall and lean build. At the plate, starts tall with a thin base, high hands, in line stride, short to contact, aggressive swing, level path, middle to pull contact during hitting evaluations. In the outfield, over the top release, fluid footwork in sync with exchange, momentum through the catch, mostly accurate throws.

Chase Elias, OF, St. Thomas Aquinas (KS), 2018
Elias is a 5-foot-10 168-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.20 laser timed 60 and a 4.27 home to first.  He has an exit velo of 89 mph. At the plate, athletic set-up, slight pre-swing rhythm, short in line stride, repeats, minimal hand movement, quick bat speed, consistent hard contact during hitting evaluations, gap to gap approach, flashing pull power.  In the outfield, over the top release, 77 mph positional velo, work behind the ball with momentum after the catch, fluid transfer, accurate throws.

Blake Freeman, OF, Bishop Carroll (KS), 2018
Freeman is a 5-foot-9 165-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a laser timed 7.32 60 and a 4.18 home to first. He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, simple and repeatable load, short in line stride, hands control the bat, mostly line drives to the middle of the cage, occasional opposite field gap line drive.  In the outfield, 79 mph positional velo, quick catch and throw with momentum through the ball, quick exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Richard Lara Jr., OF, Bishop Carroll (KS), 2018
Lara is a 5-foot-10 165-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a laser timed 7.44 60 and a 4.56 home to first.  He has a 90 mph exit velo. At the plate, tall stance with thin set up in base, short stride with hands controlling the barrel, level path, repeats swing, swing produced mostly line drives to the middle of the cage.  In the outfield, 84 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fluid exchange working with feet, athletic actions working behind the ball and through the catch, accurate throws.

Beau Rodriguez, OF, Derby (KS), 2018
Rodriguez is a 5-foot-10 175-pound left-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’2018 class.  He ran a 7.51 laser timed 60 and a 4.40 home to first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo and has a strong build. At the plate, athletic stance with wide set up in feet, loads hands, gap-to-gap approach, level bat path through the zone, body stays under control during swing.  In the outfield, 80 mph positional velo, over the top release, momentum after catch, fluid transfer, somewhat accurate throws

Blayten Tullis, OF, Derby (KS), 2018
Tullis is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 7.43 laser timed 60 and a 4.23 home to first.  He has an exit velo of 85 mph. At the plate, open stand with slight rhythm pre-swing, short in line stride, aggressive and quick bat path, level through the zone, consistent line drives to the middle of the cage during hitting evaluations.  In the outfield, 82 mph positional velo, loose over the top release, quick arm speed, clean transfer with fluid footwork, somewhat accurate throws.
