Kansas Underclass: Pitchers Analysis

Prep Baseball Report Kansas held the Kansas Underclass Invitational Showcase on January 28 at Hoover Field in Wichita.  Nearly 30 players in the 2019 and 2020 classes from around the region attended. 

Player's profiles have been updated with profile pictures, videos and stats from the event. In the past few days, we have broken down event position-by-postion.  We will finish up the analysis at taking a look at pitchers today.  Although some pitchers participated in other positions, this is just a break down of the pitchers performance.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Coaches will have new profiles to add their dashboard on ScoutPlus and players will be able to update information on their profile with ProspectPlus.

PITCHERS

Gavin Adams, RHP, Valley Center, 2020
Adams is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas 2020 class.  Adams has a lean frame with long limbs, controlled leg lift, pause at balance point, in line stride, high three-quarters release, fastball at 73-75, showed change up at 68-71 mph, flashing arm side run.

Mason Auer, RHP, Kickapoo (MO), 2019
Auer is a 6-foot 170-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class, committed to Missouri State. Auer was 83-85 mph with occasional run to his fastball, one of top fastball velos for the event, breaking ball was sharp and late, 11-to-5 action, 69-72 mph, change up flashed run and sink at 74-76 mph, throws with some effort, strong and athletic frame, easy and loose arm action, high three quarters release.

Daniel Bebee, RHP, Shawnee Mission South, 2020
Bebee is a 5-foot-11 153-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  Bebee showed command of fastball and feel for two off-speed pitches.  Fastball was 78-79 mph, works both sides of plate, 67-69 mph breaking ball, 11-to-5 shape, some having depth, finds the bottom of zone, change up at 71-73 mph, near fastball arm speed.  Athletic delivery, short and compact, repeats, accelerates down the mound, over the top arm slot.

Cam Cox, RHP, Hesston, 2019
Cox is a 5-foot-10 1160-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  Cox has a smooth delivery and throws downhill, threw top fastball velo for the event topping at 85 mph, working 83-85 mph, shows cutting action at times, arm slot will drop but mostly over the top, curveball has 11-to-5 shape, 67-68 mph, early break, down in the zone, change up at 73-73 mph, near fastball arm speed, bottom of zone, throws with some effort, quick arm speed.

Deriq Doty, RHP, Maize, 2019
Doty is a 6-foot-3 170-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  Doty is long-limbed with a projectable pitcher’s frame, high three quarters release, simple and repeatable delivery, compact, throws with regular effort, fastball at 75-78 mph, downhill, curveball has gradual break at 60-65 mph, 11-to-5 shape, change up at 65-68 mph, near fastball arm speed. 

Alex Epp, RHP, Maize South, 2019
Epp is a 5-foot-9 147-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas 2019 class.  Epp throws with a high three quarters arm slot, regular effort, controlled body throughout delivery, fastball at 70-74 mph, breaking ball has 11-to-5 action, gradual break, 60-61 mph, change up flashed arm side run at 61 -62 mph.

Tyler Farmer, LHP, Derby, 2019
Farmer is a 5-foot-9 140-pound left-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  Farmer has a controlled leg lift with an over the top arm slot, in line stride down the mound, fastball at 68-71 mph, repeats and shows command, curveball 1-to-7 shape, finds bottom of zone, early break, 56-59 mph, change up with near fastball arm speed, 61-63 mph, some with arm side release.

Andres Fonseca, RHP, St. Thomas Aquinas, 2019
Fonseca is a 5-foot-6 170-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas 2019 class. Fonseca has a strong lower half and is aggressive down the mound, controlled leg lift, high three quarters release, in line stride, fastball at 68-70 mph, both sides of plate, breaking ball has 12-to-6 action, 51-53 mph, showed  cutter with 10-to-4 shape, some flashing depth, 58-60 mph, change with slight sink at 58-60 mph.

Ben Gallagher, LHP, Manhattan, 2019
Gallagher is a 5-foot-9 140-pound left-handed pitcher in Kansas 2019 class.  Gallagher repeats his delivery, keeping hands high as leg lifts to balance point, in line stride, throws with some deception, hides ball well, over the top release, fastball at 76-78 mph, curveball has sharp 12.-to-6 action, 66-69 mph, change up at 66-69 mph, near fastball arm speed.

Griffin Henry, RHP, Lee’s Summit West (MO), 2020
Henry is a 6-foot-1 180-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2020 class.  Henry has an athletic frame, simple delivery, repeats, over the top release point, aggressive down the mound, throws with some effort at end of delivery, loose and easy arm action, fastball is downhill at 79-82 mph, heavy, showed command of the zone, breaking ball is late and sharp, 11-to-5 action, advanced change up with fastball arm speed, 71-73 mph, late sinking action. 

Grant Howard, C, Olathe Northwest, 2019
Howard is a 6-foot 150-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  Howard has a long and lean frame, slight tuck at balance point, long arm circle, in line stride, fastball at 76-78 mph, high percentage of strikes, 11-to-5 breaking ball with slurve-type spin, gradual action, change up at 67-68 mph.

Camden Jurgensen, 3B, Maize, 2019
Jurgensen is a 5-foot-10 145-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  Jurgensen has an easy delivery, loose arm action and simple delivery, repeats delivery well, high number of strikes, fastball at 77-80 mph, slight arm side run, breaking ball 65-66 mph, 12-to-6 action, sharp at times, looks to be good pitch down the road, throws change-up with near fastball arm speed, 67-70 mph.

Joe Placek, RHP, Olathe Northwest, 2020
Placek is a 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  Placek has a projectable pitcher’s frame, aggressive down mound with controlled leg lift to balance point, body stays under control, over the top release, works slightly across body, fastball at 72-74 mph, showed a cutter at 63-64 mph, some 10-to-4 action, breaking ball is more 12-to-6 64-65 mph, downward action, change up at 64-65 mph. 

William Ponce, RHP, Wellsville, 2020
Ponce is a 5-foot-6 130-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  Ponce comes from a lower slot at a three quarters release, tuck and coil at balance point, hides ball well, repeats and throws strikes, fastball has some arm side run 70-73 mph, a change up at 57-59 mph, some flashing sink.

Trey Riggs, RHP, Hays, 2019
Riggs is a 6-foot 175-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class.  Riggs is long legged and projectable, repeats smooth delivery, over the top release, downhill plane, fastball at 74-77 mph, heavy, breaking ball is sharp and late, 11-to-5 action, 65-68 mph, looks to be good pitch as he continues to develop, change up at 70-71 mph, throws slightly across body and at the bottom of the zone.

Cole Sphar, RHP, Maize, 2020
Sphar is a 5-foot-7 175-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2020 class.  Sphar has an over the top release, in line stride and throws with regular effort, conventional delivery, fastball at 73-76 mph, 12-to-6 action on breaking ball, down in the zone, 62-64 mph, change up at 62-66 mph, some with sink.

Dillon Turner, RHP, Strafford (MO), 2019
Turner is a 6-foot 164-pound right-handed pitcher in Missouri’s 2019 class. Turner is a wide-shouldered, long legged and projectable, over the top release, smooth tempo in delivery, repeats, fastball has some sink, 77-80 mph, breaking ball has 11-to-5 action, some showing sharp and late action, throws change up down in the zone with fastball arm speed at 62-65 mph, some flashing arm side release.

Kruz Wahwahsuck, RHP, Leavenworth, 2019
Wahwahsuck is a 5-foot-9 160-pound right-handed pitcher in Kansas’ 2019 class. Wahwahsuck has a strong lower half, over the top release, in line stride, fastball at 69-71 mph, 12-to-6 breaking ball, 60-63 mph, will drop to a lower slot, change up at 66-68 mph, showed command of three pitches, high number of strikes.
