MO-KAN Underclass Invitational: Corner Infield Analysis

On January 18, Prep Baseball Report Kansas/Missouri hosted the MO-KAN Underclass Invitational at Mac N Seitz Baseball Academy. Nearly 70 players in the 2018 and 2019 attended.

In the days to come, we will break down each position, taking a look at the corner infielder's performances today.  Player profiles have been updated with video and stats from the event.  Click on each player to see their profile.

Missouri


Kole Ficken, 3B, Boonville (MO), 2018
Ficken is a physical 6-foot-2 195-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class.  Ficken ran a 4.46 home-to-first and had an exit velocity of 91 mph, one of top for the event.  At the plate, Ficken attacked the ball, consistently squaring up the ball to the middle and pull side of the cage, showed power to pull gap, quick hands and fast bat speed, controlled in-line leg kick to start swing.  Defensively, 79 mph positional velo, high three-quarters arm slot, accurate throws, feet are in sync with hands, momentum towards first and through the catch, arm works.

Braeden Hinton, 3B, Nevada (MO), 2018
Hinton is a 6-foot-2 185-pound switch-hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class. Hinton had an 82 mph exit velo from the left side and an 83 mph exit velo from the right side. Ran a 4.71 home-to-first.  He has similar swing mechanics from both sides.  Starts in a athletic set-up, toe tap to load, short stride, level path, loose hands, more gap-to-gap from right side, more middle to pull from left side.  On the infield, 77 mph positional velo, quick catch and throw, fluid footwork, loose high three-quarters arm slot, accurate throws, athletic actions.

Max Hunter, 3B, Platte County (MO), 2018
Hunter is a strong 6-foot 200-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class.  Hunter gets down the line in 4.76-seconds and has an exit velo of 84 mph.   Offensively, starts in an open stance, lands soft on front foot, in-line stride, strong hands, aggressive though hitting zone, middle to pull power, body stays under control during swing.  On the infield, 81 mph positional velo, one of the top for the event, soft hands, over-the-to release, plays through the ball, hands and feet work together, accurate throws.

Braden Mahurin, 3B, Dixon (MO), 2018
Mahurin is a 5-foot-11 150-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class. Mahurin starts in a tall stance at the place, smooth load with little wasted movement, level path through the zone, swing accelerates to finish, gap-to-gap approach, balanced finish, body stays under control, ran a 4.51 home-to-first with a 69 mph exit velo. On the infield, 71 mph positional velo, soft hands, quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws.

Zachary Van Dorn, 1B, Blue Springs (MO), 2018
Van Dorn is a 5-foot-10 185-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class. He ran a 4.52 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 85 mph. At the plate, starts in balanced stance, wide base, small stride, no wasted movement, gap-to-gap approach, smooth rhythm, level path through extension. At first base, 71 mph positional velo, over the top arm slot, showed ability to start double play, clean exchange, fluid footwork.

Kansas

Davis Bloom, 1B, Blue Valley Southwest (KS), 2018
Bloom is a 6-foot- 165-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  Bloom ran a 4.53 home-to-first and had an exit velo of 81 mph.  At the plate, Bloom has a repeatable swing, in line stride, free hands, level path, consistent line drives to middle of cage during batting practice.  On the infield, 76 mph positional velo at 1B, fluid work with quick exchange and release, accurate throws, shows ability to start double play, moves well, showing range.

Nicholas Chomyak, 3B, Shawnee Mission Northwest (KS), 2018
Chomyak is a 5-foot-9 155-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class. He gets down the line in 4.27-seconds and has an exit velocity of 83 mph. Chomyak has a simple and repeatable swing, open stance, short stride, some swings had higher leg kick, consistently squared up balls during batting practice to middle of cage, level path to extension.  On the infield, 77 mph throw across diamond, three quarters release, made all plays cleanly, field ball in athletic position, mostly accurate throws.

Cody Lucas, 3B, Spring Hill (KS), 2018
Lucas is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 4.58 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 88 mph, one of the top for the event.  At the plate, gap-to-gap approach, pull power, balanced stance with load in back leg, aggressive swing, controlled leg lift, quick and strong hands, solid contact during batting practice.  On the infield, high three quarters release, 71 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws, clean exchange and fluid footwork.

David Robinson, 3B, Blue Valley Northwest, 2018
Robinson is a 5-foot-10 170-pound right-handed third baseman outfielder in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 4.07 home-to-first, one of the top for the event, and has an exit velo of 82 mph. At the plate, has a balanced set up, controlled leg lift to start swing, smooth rhythm, gap-to-gap approach, simple and repeatable mechanics, level path. On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, plays through the catch, arm works, fluid footwork.

Jake Swickard, 1B, Blue Valley Southwest (KS), 2018
Swickard is a 6-fot-2 180-pound right-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  Swickard runs a 4.57 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 82 mph.  At the plate, balanced set up, minimal movement in load, short in-line stride, level through zone, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 71 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, fluid exchange and release.

Justin Tinkler, 3B, Blue Valley Southwest (KS), 2018
Tinkler is a 6-foot 190-pound right-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 5.26 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 73 mph.  At the plate, balanced set up, early stride getting front foot down, middle approach, level bat path to extension.  On the infield, 69 mph positional velo, over the top release, quick catch and throw, mostly accurate throws.

Garrett Vandeventer, 1B, Arkansas City (KS), 2019
Vandeventer is a 5-foot-11 140-pound left-handed hitting first baseman in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He ran a 4.83 home-to-first and had a 75 mph exit velo.  Vandeventer starts in a balanced position at the plate, wide base, minimal stride, loose hands, middle to pull line drives, body controlled throughout swing.  At first base, high three quarters arm slot, 71 mph positional velo, fluid footwork, quick exchange and throw.

Bradyn Wiens, 3B, Maize South (KS), 2018
Wiens is a 5-foot-9 140-pound left-handed hitting third baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He got down the line in 4.21-seconds, one of the top for the event, and has a 77 mph exit velo.  At the plate, balanced set up, slightly closed, has a lot of movement in load, gap-to-gap approach, loose hands, balanced finish.  On the infield, short/loose high three quarters arm action, accurate throws, fluid footwork, clean exchange, quick release.

Austin Zellers, 1B, Andover Central (KS), 2018
Zellers is a 5-foot-11 189-pound right-handed hitting first basemen in Kansas’ 2018 class.  Zellers ran a 4.40 home-to-first and had an exit velo of 75 mph exit velo.  At the plate, athletic stance, separates hands and front foot to load, no wasted movement, swing produced line drives to the middle of the cage.  At first base, 75 mph positional velo, high three quarters arm slot, fluid footwork, made all plays cleanly, quick exchange.
