MO-KAN Underclass Invitational: MIddle Infield Analysis

On January 18, Prep Baseball Report Kansas/Missouri hosted the MO-KAN Underclass Invitational at Mac N Seitz Baseball Academy. Nearly 70 players in the 2018 and 2019 attended.

In the days to come, we will break down each position, taking a look at the middle infielder's performances today.  Player profiles have been updated with video and stats from the event.  Click on each player to see their profile.

Missouri

Tyler Abney, SS, Smith Cotton (MO), 2018
Abney is a 6-foot 167-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 4.46 home-to-first and had an 89 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH exit velos for the event. At the plate, starts loaded in back leg, attacks ball, aggressive swing, level through the zone, quick hands, middle line drives.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos on the day, loose arm action, clean transfer.  Slender frame and quick arm.

Russell Cook, 2B, Summit Christian (MO), 2018
Cook is a 5-foot-7 150-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class.  Cook runs a 4.51 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 76 mph.  At the plate, athletic stance, reverse toe tap, fluid rhythm, gap-to-gap approach, level bat path.  On the infield, 72 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, made all plays cleanly, fluid foowork and clean transfer.

John Herrman, SS, Blue Springs South (MO), 2019
Herrman is a 5-foot-9 150-pound switch-hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2019 class.  Herrman runs a 4.35 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 87 mph from the right side, one of the best among RHH, and 82 from the left side. With the bat,  similar stance and set up from both sides, aggressive swing, level though the zone, quick hands, quick bat speed, slightly more uphill on left side, advanced hitting approach.  On the infield, 77 mph positional velo, quick feet with clean exchange, over the top release, accurate throws.  Herrmann is a player to follow in the 2019 class.

Mark Lachowitzer, 2B, St. Pius X (MO), 2018
Lachowitzer is a is a 5-foot 175-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 4.50 home-to-first and has an 86 mph exit velo. At the plate, thin and tall set up, open stance, quick hands, showed feel for the barrel, squared up balls consistently gap-to-gap, level path to extension. On the infield, 80 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos of the event, quick catch and throw, fluid footwork, fields ball athletic position, plays through the catch, aggressive to the ball.

Zach Pitzl, 2B, Rockhurst (MO), 2018
Pitzl is a 5-foot-11 170-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in Missouri’s 2018 class. He has an exit velo of 83 mph and runs a 4.38 home-to-first. At the plate, balanced stance, leg kick, level through zone, producing mostly pull line drives.  On the infield, 75 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid actions, fields ball in athletic postion, momentum though the catch, clean change and release.

Davis Platt, SS, Staley (MO), 2018
Platt is a 5-foot-10 150-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He has an exit velo of 79 mph and runs a 4.31 home-to-first. At the plate, loads in lower half, minimal hand movement, toe tap, line drives gap-to-gap during batting practice.  On the infield, three quarters release, fields ball cleanly in athletic position, fluid exchange, 79 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos of the event.

Brendan Ryan, SS, Rockhurst (MO), 2018  
Ryan is a 5-foot-11 150-pound left-handed hitting shortstop in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He runs a 4.22 home-to-first, one of the best among LHH and has a 71 mph exit velo.  At the plate, starts in back leg, smooth load with no wasted movement, in-line stride, line-drives to middle of the cage, level path to extension.  On the infield,  71 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, athletic footwork, clean exchange, soft hands, plays through catch .

KANSAS

Jack Brimacombe, SS, Blue Valley (KS), 2018
Brimacombe is a 5-foot-10 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He runs a 4.76 home-to-first and has a 77 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, slightly open, no wasted movement in load, simple and repeatable mechanics, quick hand, level through the hitting zone, gap-to-gap approach.  On the infield, 74 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, hands and feet in sync, plays through the ball with momentum towards first base. 


Chase Burgess, SS, Blue Valley West (KS), 2019
Burgess is a 5-foot-7 140-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He runs a 4.50 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 81 mph.  At the plate, Burgess took a good round of batting practice, consistent line drives to middle of cage, loose hands, body stays under control, gap-to-gap approach, balanced stance with minimal load, in-line stride, balanced finish. On the infield, high ¾ release, quick feet, quick exchange and release, accurate throws, 76 mph positional vleo.  Projectable player in 2019 class.


Jhet Burkhart, 2B, Buhler (KS), 2018
Burkhart is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting second baseman in Kansas’ 2018 class.  At the plate, Burkhart starts with an open stance, lands in line with front foot, minimal load, controlled stride, swing produced line drives to middle of cage, 76 mph exit velo, ran a 4.46 home-to-first. On the infield, 64 mph positional vleo, clean exchange with quick release, over the top release, accurate throws, fluid footwork. 

Isaiah Cohens, SS, Goddard (KS), 2019
Cohens is a 5-foot-9 125-pound switch hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He runs a 4.58 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 69 mph.  At the plate, balanced set up, loads hands, short stride, gap to gap, similar swing from both sides of plate, more pull approach from left side.  On the infield, athletic actions, high three quarters release, hands and feet work together, arm works, clean exchange, quick feet, player to follow in 2019 class.

Corbin Lill, SS, Clearwater (KS), 2018
Lill is a 6-foot 160-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2018 class.  He ran a 4.31 home-to-first and had a 79 mph exit velo.  At the plate, open stance, in-line stride, minimal hand movement in load, loose quick hands, level though the zone, body stays under control. On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, over the top release, momentum through the catch, fluid footwork, good route to ball, quick release.  Long and lean frame capable adding strength.

Logan Martin, SS, Blue Valley North (KS), 2019
Martin is a 5-foot-6 115-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He runs a 4.70 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 66 mph.  At the plate, starts with weight in back leg, toe tap for timing, middle to pull line drives.  On the infield, 61 mph positional velo, over the top release, fields ball in front of feet in athletic position, fluid footwork, clean exchange. 

Joshua Mitchell, SS, Shawnee Mission Northwest (KS), 2018
Mitchell is a 6-foot 160-pound right-handed outfielder in Kansas 2018 class.  He ran a 4.14 home-to-first, one of the best for the event, and has an exit velo of 82 mph.  Mitchell has a simple and repeatable swing, consistent line drives to middle/pull side of cage, short stride, level path, hits with leverage in back leg.  On the infield, 82 mph positional velo, one of the top infield velos for the event, high three quarters release, arm works, quick catch and release, athletic footwork, moves to the ball with a purpose, athletic actions. 


Chance Montgomery, SS, Maur Hill-Mount Academy (KS), 2017
Montgomery is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2017 class.  He ran a 4.33 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 82 mph. At the plate, starts in open stance, in-line stide, hand load, hand work inside ball, middle approach.  On the infield, 72 mph positional velo, quick feet, aggressive to ball, high three quarters release, quick catch and throw, loose arm, accurate throws, athletic frame.

Jesse Peoples, SS, Bishop Carroll (KS), 2019
People is a 5-foot-10 130-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Kansas’ 2019 class.  He runs a 4.94 home-to-first and has an exit velo of 75 mph. At the plate, athletic stance, short and simple load, minimal stride, loose hands, has feel for the barrel, middle line drives during batting practice, body stays under control.  On the infield, 65 mph positional velo, three quarters release, fluid actions, clean arm action.  Lean and projectable frame.

Nebraska

Cole Evans, SS, Grand Island (NE), 2019
Evans is an athletic 6-foot 170-pound right-handed hitting shortstop in Nebraska’s 2019 class.  He got down the line in 4.47-seconds and has an exit velo of 79 mph.  Evans has an aggressive swing, no wasted movement in load, starts in balanced position at the plate, short stride, quick hands, swing produced line drives to the middle/pull side of cage. On the infield, 79 mph positional velo, athletic footwork with soft hands, accurate throw with momentum through the catch, athletic actions, clean arm action.
