Missouri Underclass Games: Catcher's Analysis

Prep Baseball Report-Missouri held the Underclass Prospect Games on June 14 at the University of Missouri.  Nearly 100 players participated in the 2018 and 2019 class. 

Player profiles have been updated with video, times, velos and profile pictures.  Today we will take a look at the catchers performances from the event.  Although some catchers may have played other positions, this is just a break down of the catching performances from the day.  In the days to come we will break down outfielders, infielders and pitchers.

Catchers

Jackson Caley, C, Pleasant Hill, 2018
Caley is a 5-foot-10 174-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.34 60 and has a 4.61 home-to-first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, approach is to opposite gap, loose and quick hands, controlled leg kick, level path to the ball, smooth load with no wasted movement, doubled to left in game action.  Behind the plate, had pop times between 2.01 and 2.56-seconds, one of the top pop times for the event, 74 mph positional velo, over the top release, one of the top velos for the event, quick catch and exchange, throws have carry, fluid footwork, soft hands. 

Jacob Crayne, C, McCluer North, 2018
Crayne is a 5-foot-9 155-pound switch-hitting cather in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.57 60 and a 4.52 home-to-first.  He has a 74 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, in line stride, pull side line drives during batting practice, creates whip in bat, loose.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.07 and 2.28-seconds, 71 mph positional velo, high three-quarters release, fluid footwork, clean glove-to-hand transfer, mostly accurate throws. 

Louis Eckelkamp, C, St. Francis Borgia, 2019
Ecklekamp is a 5-foot-8 185-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 759 60 and has a 4.50 home-to-first.  He had a 90 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos for the event. At the plate, aggressive swing with power to pull gap, quick hands, open stance, leg kick, hard solid contact during batting practice. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.05 and 2.27-seconds, 74 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for the event, loose three-quarters arm slot, clean exchange, momentum through the catch, somewhat accurate throws. 

Dawson Erholz, C, Lee’s Summit West, 2019
Erholz is a 5-foot-11 155-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.47 60 and has a 4.47 home-to-first.  He had a 75 mph exit velo. At the plate, repeats swing, solid contact during batting practice, middle of the field, athletic stance.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.24 and 2.36-seconds, 70 mph positional velo, clean exchange and transfer, high three quarters release, soft hands, somewhat accurate throws,

Allante Hall, C, Blue Springs South, 2018
Hall is a 6-foot 170-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.49 60 and a 4.52 home-to-first.  He had an 87 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos for the event. At the plate, fast bat speed with power to middle of the field, smooth load, repeats with no wasted movement, consistent solid contact during batting practice, feel for barrel, barreled up the ball in two at-bats in game action, singled. Behind the plate, pop times between 1.84 to 1.97-seconds, top pop time of the event, 83 mph positional velo, top catcher’s velo of the event, quick catch and throw, feet work with hands, accurate, quick twitch, top athletes in Missouri’s 2018 class. 

John Herrman, C, Blue Springs South, 2019
Herrman is a 5-foot-9 160-pound switch hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 6.96 60, one of the fastest times for the event, and a 5.01 home-to-first.  His exit velo was 86 mph, one of the top RHH velos for the event.  At the plate, athletic stance, controlled load into back side, pull side contact during batting practice, quick bat speed, feel for the barrel, singled to the right side in game action, line out to third. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.03 and 2.27-seconds, 72 mph positional velo, over the the top release, quick feet with fluid exchange, catches ball well, mostly accurate throws.

Andrew Keck, C, Vianney, 2018
Keck is a 6-foot-2 190-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.08 60 and a 4.66 home to first.  He posted an exit velo of 79 mph.  At the plate, wide set up, short stride, middle approach, power to pull side, simple and repeats, tripled down the third base line in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.03 and 2.13-seconds, 76 mph positional velo, one of the top velos of the event, short over the top arm slot, quick exchange, fluid footwork, accurate throws. 

Michael Long, C, MICDS, 2019
Long is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.78 60 and a 4.90 home-to-first.  He has an 85 mph exit velo. At the plate, starts slightly open, leg kick, aggressive swing with quick bat, pull side power, gap-to-gap approach, strength in hands, had a pair of singles in game action.  Behind the plate, 2.18-2.34-seconds, 74 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for the event, over the top release, loose arm action, quick feet, creates momentum towards second. 

Brock McLeod, C, Farmington, 2018
McLeod is a 5-foot-6 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 8.39 60 and a 5.26 home-to-first.  He has a 72 mph exit velo.  At the plate, slightly open stance, short stride, minimal load with no wasted movement, middle to pull side line drives during batting practice.  Behind the plate, 2.10 to 2.24-seconds pop times, 65 mph positional velo, quick over the top arm slot, clean exchanges with fluid footwork, momentum through the catch, somewhat accurate throws. 

Tre Morris, C, Battle, 2018

Morris is a 5-foot-10 200-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.65 60 and a 4.94 home-to-first.  His exit velocity was 79 mph.  At the plate, solid consistent contact during batting practice, slightly open, middle of the field line drives with power, quick bat, aggressive, good round of BP, had two doubles and a single in game action, aggressive at the plate during game.  Behind the plate, 1.94 to 2.01 pop times, one of the top pop times for the event, 71 mph positional velo, accurate throws with carry, strong and durable frame, quick over the top release, short arm action, loose, aggressive with momentum, advanced actions. 

James Obertop, C, Westminster, 2019
Obertop is a 6-foot 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He rean a 7.66 60 and got down the line in 4.74-seconds.  He has a 90 mph exit velo, one of the top RHH velos for the event.  At the plate, balanced stance, toe tap, level thought he zone, gap-to-gap approach.  Behind the plate, short over-the-top release, quick catch and throw, pop times between 2.00 and 2.03-seconds, one of the top pop times for the event, 72 mph positional velo, mostly accurate throws, strong frame, player to watch in the 2019 class.

Braden Spawr, C, Valley Park, 2019
Spawr is a 5-foot-11 150-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2019 class.  He ran a 7.81 60 and 5.02 home-to-first.  He has 78 mph exit velo.  At the plate, thin and open stance, level and aggressive swing, pull side line drives, body under control during swing.  Behind the plate, 2.13 to 2.44-seconds pop time, 72 mph positional velo, quick actions, clean exchange, over the top release, feet work with hands, mostly accurate throws.
