Player Spotlight: C Josiah Steen (Homeschool, 2018)

Shon Plack
Missouri Scouting Director

Josiah Steen (Homeschool, 2018) attended the Unsigned Senior Showcase on Oct. 1 in St. Louis.  Here is a look inside the recruiting process for Josiah Steen.

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Steen: I would like to study Business and Spanish. I think my experience with baseball will go well with a business degree and I plan to become proficient in speaking, reading and writing in Spanish.

PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do?
PBR: My Junior year was tough. I started the season with pneumonia that became “walking” pneumonia and didn't clear completely until the season was over. I dropped 15 lbs. and it really hurt my ability to play. Only recently have I returned to and passed the weight I was as a Sophomore. As a Sophomore i was the Patriots starting varsity catcher and my batting average was .389 with a .450 OBP. My Junior year it dropped to .264 with a .385 OBP. Last season the Patriots went 19-12 and the highlight was winning a MHSSAA tournament in Potosi beating Union 1-0 in a no-hitter.

PBR: What are you goals for your senior season?

Steen: My teammates and I have committed to more offseason work than has ever been done in the history of the Patriots. We hope for a record setting season, and especially we want to do well at the National Homeschool Tournament in Auburndale Florida. Now that I’m healthy, I have been steadily improving my baseball skills and hope that I can be one of the most productive players on the Patriots. I also hope some of those that have overlooked me as a college recruit will regret it. Just saying.

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

Steen: I played travel team for the St. Louis Recruits 17U coached by Todd Stein. This fall I played for the Patriots Varsity coached by Mark Valle and for the St. Louis Bears 18U coached by Marc Cooper. For the Bears this fall I hit (41 total at bats) .488 with a .596 OBP.  The Patriots play both games and scrimmages, so I'm not sure of my stats, but I believe I'm right around .400 batting.
PBR: Do you play any other sports?
Steen: I played basketball for the Patriots (homeschool) until my sophomore year when I decided to work on baseball exclusively. I often play at the YMCA and I still have some b-ball skills. I used to swim competitively, and live on a lake.

PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?

Steen: ACT currently 24, I'm taking it again Oct. 28. GPA 3.96 and I have been doing duel enrollment at Jefferson Community College.
