Player Spotlight: LHP/OF Bailey Vuylsteke (Oakville, 2016)

Shon Plack
Missouri Scouting Director

Bailey Vuylsteke (Oakville, 2016)   is a 6-foot 180-pound left-handed pitcher and left-handed hitting outfielder, and one of the top uncommitted players on the state.

Vuylsteke is a strike thrower with three pitches.  He has a high three-quarters arm slot, touched 83 mph twice in the Top Gun Showcase last February.  He shows a 1-to-7 shape curveball at 70-75 mph with late action, and a change-up with slight sink at 75-77 mph.  He works into legs during delivery, with smooth rhythm. His arm works and is able to work both sides of plate.

At the plate, Vuylsteke has an aggressive swing.  His stance is athletic and balanced with a toe-tap load.  Vuylsteke’s swing is level with pull power.

Last spring, Vuylsteke hit at a .367 clip with four doubles and ten runs driven in.  On the mound, he worked 44 innings and finished with a 3.18 ERA with 36 strikeouts.

Here is a look inside the recruitment of Bailey Vuylsteke.

PBR: Are you looking for anything in particular in a school? (Example: high academics, certain academic program, local, etc.)

Vuylsteke: I am looking for a competitive school that has a strong established program and a program with a coaching staff that believes in me. I have received some interest from Quincy and some other very good Division II programs, but I am still set on proving I can play and have success at the Division I level. I think my competitive and gritty style on the mound can more than make up for being "undersized", which is why I think most Division I coaches are overlooking me.

PBR: How did you do your junior year? What were your high school statistics? And how did your team do? Name some players that will have an impact on the 2016 season.

Vuylsteke: I did some things well my junior year but I felt there is a lot left to be desired and I was definitely not content with the results. Our team got a super hot start but sort of sputtered at the end. I'm hoping to make a deeper run this high school season. One of my teammates that should have a huge impact on our team is Raul Elguezabal. A 2016 IF that has been an important player the last two years and I know he has improved even more over the offseason. I'm excited to have the opportunity to play with him again this year.

PBR: What are you goals for your senior season?

Vuylsteke: As a team I think we can do some great things and hopefully make a playoff run. My personal goal is to get better everyday and do whatever it takes to help my team achieve our goal.

PBR: What travel team do you play for? Are you playing fall ball with a team?

Vuylsteke: I play for the St. Louis Pirates over the summer. Coached by Brett Huber and Rick Strickland.

PBR: Do you play any other sports?

Vuylsteke: I played Quarterback this fall for my high school football team.

PBR: What are your ACT and GPA?

Vuylsteke: I got a 25 on my ACT but I plan on taking it another time. I have a 3.3 GPA
