Q&A with Grant Gavin, a RHP/1B from St. Pius X

Recently at the Top Prospect Showcase at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Grant Gavin impressed with his over all athletic ability at multiple positions. In the outfield, Gavin showed concise route to the ball with a strong, accurate arm. At first base, he moved very well around the bag, with good hands and instincts. The left handed hitter also showed some ability at the plate, with quick bat speed and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Gavin also showed ability to pitch, topping out at 88-mph.

We recently caught up with the three sport standout to get his thoughts on last season and whatthe future may hold.

Grant Gavin, OF,RHP, St. Pius X
PBR: What do you expect going into your senior season?
Gavin: To really improve both on the mound and at the plate. I also expect to have success as a team during the high school season and winning a lot of games.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player?
Gavin: My biggest strength is when I am pitching I am able to throw my fastball on both corners of the plate and set up my off-speed with my fastball.

PBR: What aspect of your game do you believe needs the most improvement?
Gavin: I need to develop a more consistent change-up or another third pitch, to complement my fastball and curveball.

PBR: What are your expectations and experiences in the recruiting process?
Gavin: Find a college that is interested in me and believe in my ability to play at the collegiate level; also a place where I can compete to play right away.

PBR: What type of program would you like to play at? What is most important to you: Caliber of program, coaching staff, academics, etc…?
Gavin:I would prefer to go to a four year school. The most important things for me are having a chance to play immediately, playing baseball at a school that has a winning program, and also playing for an excellent coaching staff.

PBR: What schools are you most interested in right now, and why?
Gavin: The schools I am most interested in right now are the University of Central Missouri and William Jewell because these are the four-year schools that have shown the most interest in me thus far.

PBR: What were your personal goals for the 2012 season and were they met? Goals for the 2013 season?
Gavin: My personal goals for 2012 were to individually have a successful year and to also gain college exposure. I believe that both of these goals were met to a certain degree, especially due to the number of showcase tournaments that my summer team played in and the individual camps that I attended. My goals for 2013 are to get myself as prepared as I possibly can to play college baseball.

PBR: What team do you play for in the summer?
Gavin: I have played for the KC Prospects for the past 4 summers.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher/hitter that you have faced?
Gavin: The toughest pitcher I have faced is Devin Williams from the St. Louis Pirates. The toughest hitter I have faced is John Roblez from Bishop Ward High School.

PBR: What is your fondest memory or highlight from your 2012 baseball season (High School or Summer)?
Gavin: My fondest memory from my 2012 season was being selected and playing for team Missouri in the Junior Sunbelt Classic in McAlester, Oklahoma.

PBR: What is your most memorable moment in baseball so far in your life?
Gavin: The most memorable moment thus far in my baseball career was beating Richmond 8-7 in the district Semifinal on a walk-off hit when I was a Sophomore.

PBR: You recently attended a PBR Showcase, what are your thoughts on how it will be beneficial to you as you keep moving forward in the recruiting process?

Gavin: It was beneficial to me because the staff videotaped my workout and I didn’t have any video to send to coaches before the PBR Showcase. I am also very appreciative of the PBR staff because they genuinely care about each player, their futures, and helping players gain college exposure.
