Top Prospect Games: Catchers Analysis

On August 2, Prep Baseball Report-Missouri/Kansas held the Top Prospect Games in Warrensburg, Missouri.  Fifty players in both stats participated in the 2018 and 2017 class. 

College recruiters and pro scouts have access to the updated player profiles on ScoutPlus.  Profiles have been updated with video, profile picture, times and velos from the event.  Today, we will break down the catching performances from the event.  Although some players may have participated in other positions, this is just a look at catching performances.  Players are listed in alphabetical order.

Catchers

Kaleb Baker, C, Aurora (MO), 2017
Baker is a 5-foot-11 175-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 8.07 60 and a 5.18 home-to-first. At the plate, thin set up, aggressive swing with loose hands, gap to gap approach, short path to contact.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.08 and 2.33-seconds, 76 mph positional velo, one of the best for the event, high exchange, quick transfer, short over the top release, mostly accurate throws.

Kyle Clark, C, Grain Valley (MO), 2017
Clark is a 6-foot 201-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 7.66 60 and a 4.93 home-to-first.  H has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, smooth rhythm in load, some hand movement, controlled leg lift, in line stride, hands work inside of ball, gap-to-gap approach.  In game action, solid line drive to right-field. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.25 and 2.38-seconds, 70 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid footwork working with exchange, accurate throws, some with carry.

Clayton Cory, C, Hickman (MO), 2018
Cory is a 5-foot-8 160-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.16 60 and a 4.78 home-to-first.  He has an 80 mph exit velo. At the plate, open stance, early in line stride, quick and level path through the zone, swing produced mostly pull side line drives during batting practice. Singled to centerfield in game action. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.25 and 2.32-seconds, 69 mph positional velo, high three quarters release, soft hands, clean exchange, fluid footwork, somewhat accurate throws. 

Louis Garavaglia, C, SLUH (MO), 2017
Garavaglia is a 6-foot-3 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 7.76 60 and a 5.03 home-to-first.  He has an 88 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced set up, smooth load into back side, early in line stride, mostly middle of the field line drives during batting practice, doubled down left-field line in game action.  Behind the plate, 2.16 to 2.39-second pop times, 73 mph positional velo, fluid glove to hand transfer, in sync with quick footwork, over the top release, accurate throws that flash carry to the bag. 

Nick Hagedorn, C, Smith-Cotton (MO), 2017
Hagedorn is a 5-foot-10 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.93 60, one of the top times for the event, and a 4.17 home-to-first, also one of the event's best for LHH.  He has a 91 mph exit velo, top for LHH. At the plate, showed power to both gaps during batting practice, minimal load, loose and quick hand, quick bat speed, feel for the barrel, solid consistent contact, stayed inside ball with a pair of ground balls to the shortstop in game action. Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.20-seconds, one of the top times for the event, quick twitch actions with feet and hands, short over the top release, accurate throws, some with carry, 71 mph positional velo.

Amos Healy, C, Staley (MO), 2017
Healy is a 5-foot-11 215-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 7.72 60 and a 4.94 home-to-first.  He has a 92 mph exit velo, one of the top among RHH. At the plate, balanced set up, toe tap, in line stride, strong hands, aggressive to the pull side, flashes power to pull gap, mostly pull side contact in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 1.99 to 2.15-seconds, top pop time of the event, momentum through the catch, high three quarters release, 77 mph positional velo, tops among catchers for the event, quick catch and throw, fluid exchange, mostly accurate throws.

Braden Mahurin, C, Dixon (MO), 2018
Mahurin is a 6-foot 165-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.52 60 and a 4.81 home-to-first.  He has a 75 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, early in line stride, accelerated swing speed, level through the hitting zone, swing produced mostly middle of the field line drives, flashing pull power, singled to centerfield in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.02 and 2.19-seconds, one of the top times for the event, 75 mph positional velo, strong and durable frame, quick feet, over the top release with momentum through the catch, soft hands, athletic actions, accurate throws.

Nick Modrcin, St. James Academy (KS), 2018
Modrcin is a 6-foot-1 185-pound left-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.95 60 and a 5.22 home-to-first.  He has an 82 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stand, smooth weight shift into back side, gap-to-gap approach, short path to contact, hands work inside ball, solid single to centerfield and double down left field line in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.14 and 2.31-seconds, 69 mph positional velo, over the top release, fluid transfer working with footwork.

Luke Moehle, C, Summit Christian (MO), 2018
Moehle is a 5-foot-11 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.33 60 and a 4.57 home-to-first, one of the best among RHH.  He has an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, athletic stance, smooth load into back side, minimal hand load, swing produced gap-to-gap line drives consistently, repeats swing, single to left field and hard line drive out to centerfield in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.00 and 2.07-seconds, one of top times for the event, 72 mph positional velo, strong and durable frame, over the top release, clean/high exchange with quick release, momentum through the catch, mostly accurate throw, flashed carry.

Hunter Ostertag, C, Atchison County (KS), 2017
Ostertag is a 5-foot-6 145-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 6.94 60, one of the top times for the event, and a 4.65 home-to-first.  He has a 79 mph exit velo.  At the plate, balanced set up, leg lift with minimal load, hands loose thought the hitting zone, middle of the field line drives during batting practice.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.09 and 2.22-seconds, 75 mph positional velo, one of the top for the event, over the top release, clean transfer with fluid footwork, mostly accurate throws. 

Drew Reed, C, Union (MO), 2017
Reed is a 5-foot-11 194-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2017 class.  He ran a 7.62 60 and a 4.88 home-to-first.  He has a 90 mph exit velo, one of the top among RHH. At the plate, strong frame with loose hands, simple and controlled swing mechanics, balanced set up, short in line stride, quick bat speed, solid consistent line drives gap-to-gap during batting practice, singled to centerfield in game action.  Behind the plate, pop times between 2.14 and 2.20-seconds, 75 mph positional velo, one of the top velos for the event, over the top release, fluid transfer, quick feet, clean exchange, accurate throws with carry. 

AJ Spinello, C, Rockhurst (MO). 2018
Spinello is a 5-foot-10 180-pound right-handed hitting catcher in Missouri’s 2018 class.  He ran a 7.52 60 and a 4.63 home-to-first.  He has an 84 mph exit velo. At the plate, balanced stance, reverse toe tap, in line stride, accelerated hands, quick bat, level through zone, gap-to-gap approach, doubled down left field line and singled to center in game action.  Behind the plate, 72 mph positional velo, over the top arm slot, quick release, quick catch and throw, accurate thrower.
