Commitment Q&A With Southern Illinois - Edwardsville Signee Trace Harrington

Whether it was at our winter events, during the high school season, or at Creekside in the summer, 1B Trace Harrington (Republic, 2024) was a significant winner from a prospect perspective last year.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound right-handed slugger showed well above-average raw power both during workouts and in-game throughout 2023, rising greatly up our rankings to finish his junior campaign inside the top-55 in the state.

PBR: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?

Harrington: When it comes to the recruiting process for college baseball, I had high hopes and excitement. I was looking forward to showcasing my skills, meeting coaches, and finding the perfect fit for my college baseball journey.

PBR: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?

Harrington: No, I was just wanting to go anywhere I could compete at the next level 

PBR: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?

Harrington: It started to heat up my junior year summer. Coach Lyons first saw me play in St. Louis and the Super 17. 

PBR: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?

Harrington: It felt like a good place to be right when I got to my visit. The coaching staff, facilities, and being able to play for a Division 1 program were key factors. 

PBR: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?

Harrington: Lindenwood, Iowa Western CC, Johnson County CC, and Conners State.

PBR: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?

Harrington: The best player I have faced would be RHP Tate McGuire (Liberty North, 2023; Arkansas). He had high level stuff and had a great change of pace on the mound.

PBR: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?

Harrington: I have always wanted to play baseball at the next level. During my freshman year, I started to have some more success and took things like the gym and practice more seriously. 

PBR: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?

Harrington: Get bigger, faster, and stronger. In addition to that, do things that will make you stick out there. If you have a passion for the game, work your tail off to get to the next level. 

PBR: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?

Harrington: Hitting a go-ahead home-run at Baum Walker Stadium to win the Chad Wolfe Classic.

PBR: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?

Harrington: We have a powerful line up that will compete well in our tough district and conference. Our pitching will help us to another good shot at state this year.
