NEBRASKA SCOUT BLOG: Week of June 22nd

Week of June 29th

Papillion-LaVista South vs. P52’s (Millard South)

  • South Mountain CC commit Jayden Payne (LHP, 2020) made the start for P52s and went 6 strong innings. Payne has a whippy high ¾ delivery that creates a bit of run. He sat around 79-81 throughout his start and also mixed in a sweeping breaking ball that he comfortably threw for strikes. He pounded the zone all day as he struck out five and allowed no walks. The 6’2” Payne has some room to grow into his frame and should be able to add some additional velo as a result.

  • Uncommitted ‘21 Austin Sides threw the final 3 innings for Papio South. Sides showed slight sink/run action on his 80-81 mph fastball. He was able to locate the fastball as well as his 11/5 breaking ball for strikes throughout his outing as he struck out two and walked none.

  • At the plate the P52s were led by ‘20 DMACC commit Jarrett Novak who had two hits including an RBI double. Wichita State ‘20 commit Noah Greise made hard contact in all three at bats including a base hit and two line outs. Papio South was led by uncommitted ‘21 Garrett Freeman who showed some pull side pop with a homerun in the 4th inning.

Carpet Land (Lincoln East) vs. Jr. Jay White

  • Quiet night offensively for Carpet Land. Uncommitted ‘21, Sam Wragge (INF/RHP) led the way offensively for Carpetland with two hits and two RBIs including a triple in his fist at bat. Jack Larson, Austin Gaines and Austin Schneider each added a hit.

  • Doane College commit Jackson Goodyear picked up the win while wiggling his way through 5 innings of 9 hit baseball only giving up one run.

  • ‘22 outfielder Jack Stressman and ‘23, MIF Coby Hatcher both left an intriguing impression after the first time seeing them. Stressman has a physical compact frame with strength throughout and shows athleticism in the outfield and on the basepath. At the plate, the left handed hitter has a pull first approach and some quickness in his hands. Hatcher led the Jr. Jays  offensively with three hits. He’s got an athletic slender build with smooth actions in infield. He’s got a funk in the arm action across the infield that should improve as he develops. Hatcher looks to have a chance to be another high caliber player to come through Creighton Prep.

SOS Heating & Air (Ralston) vs. Peitzmeier Demolition (Gross)

  • Uncommitted ‘21, Josh Kilzer (RHP, SOS) threw a complete game shut-out, striking out six and surrendering four hits. Kilzer got an average build with athletic repeatable actions on the mound. Arm is compact on the backside and long outfront, ball comes out from a quicker high ¾ slot and gets on a slight downhill plane. Fastball was up to 83 mph and  played up with life through the strike zone. Still developing a feel for secondary offerings but as the breaking ball continues to develop it has a chance to play at the next level. 11/5 shape with late depth and solid spin.

  • Jake Chronic and Justin Remar both had three hits and drove in a combined five runs.

  • Wayne State commit Kaleb Holm and Creighton commit Nolan Sailors each had a hit. Holm looks the part physically & athletically, he runs well and has a build that should be able to carry an additional 20-25 pounds at the next level. Sailors’ hit came in a triple in the right field gap and was solid defensively pure usual.

  • Quiet night for Peitzmeier, they barreled up a couple of baseballs throughout that we made into outs from Ralston. They’re a fun team to watch on the base paths, trying to take advantage and swipe bases as much as possible.  ‘20, Nate Fiscus led the way with a pair of hits.

Wolfe Electric (Millard West) vs. DC Electric (Bellevue West)

  • Nebraska commit Max Anderson (#2 ranked 2020) had three hits including two solo home runs in his first two at bats. His quiet approach and quick hands allows him to consistently get the barrel to the baseball. His play at shortstop is polished with clean footwork and an arm that will allow him to play infield at the next level.

  • Cuesta College Commit Caden Eby and uncommitted ‘20 Tyler Kephart kept the Millard West bats mostly quiet on a night after they exploded for 27 runs. Eby threw three innings with the only hits allowed being the two Anderson home runs. He works out of a high ¾ arm angle in the 80-83 range with some slight run. He also mixes in a CB with dome depth that he occasionally threw early in the count. Kephart scattered three hits over the final four innings. He has a whippy delivery out of a ¾ arm slot. Fastball was in the low 80’s and he mixed in a CB that had gradual depth. He worked down in the zone most of the night inducing plenty of ground balls and walking none.

  • Uncommitted ‘21 Connor Schneider led Bellevue west at the plate with two hits and four RBIs. The RBIs came on a grand slam in the 5th inning. He has a gap to gap approach at the plate with some pull sided pop. At shortstop he shows some athletic actions with an accurate arm that will continue to develop.
