Preseason Underclass Central Showcase

We would like to thank all who participated in PBR Massachusetts' Underclass Central Showcase. This was a great opportunity for 2016, '17, '18, and '19 prospects to be put on college radars. Many players impressed during their individual workouts at the showcase. Below we have the complete statistical results from the event as well as the top performers across various different categories.

In the coming weeks, we will be adding and updating profiles for each of the players in attendance, including complete analysis and video.

Preseason Underclass Central: Class of 2017 Evaluations

TOP POSITION PLAYER:
Dylan McNary, SS/OF, Doherty Memorial, 2017
TOP Pitcher:
Dylan Presnal, RHP, Deerfield Academy, 2017

Alex Reynolds, C/1B, Hopkinton, 2017
Scouting Report: Right-handed hitting catcher who showed well for himself back behind the dish. Pop time of 2.09 and threw 70 mph. Transfer and set-up were good at the event. At 5-foot-10, 185-pounds you can see him gaining weight and being able to handle the position well. Ran a 8.25. Hits from an open set-up and showed a pull side swing. The hands work cleanly and he showed a direct path to the ball. Tee exit velocity of 86.

Brendan Desautels, C/OF, Holy Name, 2017
Scouting Report: Right-handed hittting catcher who stands 5-foot-11, 175-pounds. The pop time is 2.19 and the arm strength is 68. The arm path is short, which will help as he matures. Gaining ground and working on the transfer will help this player as well. I like the swing, showed a good path and the bottom half set up was solid and under control. Tee exit velocity of 77.

Dylan McNary, SS/OF, Doherty Memorial, 2017
Scouting Report: Smooth right-handed hitting middle infielder. Glove is confident and above average for his age. Throwing is simple and 71 across the diamond with minimal effort at this point. Will be an above average defender. The running needs to improve but its free and loose, ran a 7.8. The bat shows plus bat speed out of a wide base set up. The tee exit velocity is 82. The bottom half has minimal movement and keeps him in position to hit. Good looking young prospect for sure.

Dylan Presnal, RHP, Deerfield Academy, 2017
Scouting Report: Long and lanky right-handed arm. Ton of upside with this guy as his arm is fast. The delivery is clean and the slot is loose and slightly above ¾. The fastball sits in the low 80s now and the changeup is 68. The spin pitch is a slurve and it sat at 68, once it tightens up it could be an out pitch. At 6-foot-1, 175-pounds you can see his frame filling out and him being 20 pounds heavier. The arm is really good so this guy should receive a great deal of attention.

Finn Hodgins, 3B/1B St. Peters Prep, 2017
Scouting Report: Big and physical right-handed hitter. Worked out at third base and showed a good clean arm with 74 mph arm strength. The glove needs work and the prep steps will help clean his approach, all things he can control. The running will improve but he will be a hitter first, as he ran a 8.1. At 6-foot-2, 215-pounds you can project him to hit for power and possilbly have a bat that can change the game. Tee exit velocity of 87 already and the set-up is wide and the hands work cleanly.

Nolan Dousa, RHP, Mansfield, 2017
Scouting Report: 5-foot-10, 185-pound right-handed pitcher with room to fill out his frame. Throws from a higher than ¾ arm slot and has a windmill type upper half delivery. The fastball sat at 74 and had some run to it. The breaking ball was big and showed shape at 56. The changeup is a work in progress at 63. Showed good athleticsm in the stretch with a time of 1.41. Has a great del going on in his delivery and would like to see him tighten up his delivery so his stuff can improve.

PJ Barry, OF/INF, St. Peter Marian, 2017
Scouting Report: Good looking 5-foot-11, 160-pound athlete. Worked out in both the infield and the outfield, threw 77 from the outfield with carry and 67 form the infield. Approach in both spots was done correctly. The glove was smooth in the infield and confident. Ran a 7.47. The bat is clean and loose, will improve with physical strength. Tee exit velocity of 76. Like this player as he can bounce around and do a great deal on the field, making him a versatile prospect.

Sam Kapacziewski, RHP, Doherty Memorial, 2017
Scouting Report: 5-foot-11, 155-pound right-handed pitcher with a plus ¾ slot. The delivery is easy and he looks comfortable doing it. Fastball sat a 67. The changeup was 63 and showed good form, and the breaking pitch was 12/7 and sat at 58. The frame is frail now and he needs some weight and strength, so lets following this arm for the next couple years and see how he matures physically.

Steven Pickering, 1B/OF, Minnechaug Regional, 2017
Scouting Report: Showed very well for himself at the workout, the AP Royals product ran an easy 6.93 and showed a good approach to the swing. The swing is clean and the hand path is direct to the ball. This allows the bat head to work nicely, tee exit velocity of 86. Threw 66 from the infield and showed good athleticism. The slot needs to loosen up and allow his arm to work as he matures. Lots to like with this player and I look forward to following his progress. Coaches should see this guy play a couple times in these next couple years.

Tyler Gomes, C/RHP, Franklin, 2017
Scouting Report: Rumor on the street is this players was sick all night but still competed in the workout. As a positional player, he worked out behind the dish, showing a short arm path and a pop time of 2.13. The arm strength was 67 from the catching position. The feet and transfer will clean up and help him improve all his times and throws. Ran a 7.57. The bat was strong and he throws the barrel to the ball well. Tee exit velocity of 72. The set-up is good and it allows him to use his hands nicely. On the mound, he threw from a high-¾ slot and the fastball sat at 73. His secondary stuff is good, as the changeup had the correct action and sat at 67. The spin had very good shape and form, sitting at 62. If he can minimize the effort in his delivery his stuff will take a jump. Good looking athlete at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds.

Tyler LaFreniere, C/OF, North Attleboro, 2017
Scouting Report: Right-handed hitting catcher that had a pop time of 2.15 and threw 68 from behind the dish. The receiving is good and his set up is correct. The slot is a tick high but the ball comes out fine. The swing is a bit long and around but with physical strength that can become shorter. Finishing through the ball will help him as well. Ran a 7.84 as well. At 5-foot-9, 140-pounds, growth will be important.
