NE Pride Workout: Notebook

Dan Cevette
President, New York

The Northeast Pride travel organization held their annual college scout day back in early June at Dutchess Stadium. PBR NY was on hand to cover the workout where several players shined. Here's a look below at several players that stoodout last month.

2020 RHP/1B Orin Winslow (Ramsey, NJ)
Built like a tank standing 6-foot-3, 230 pounds. Showed strength at the plate, especially to his pull-side. Above average bat-speed with lift through his finish. On the mound he really turned the college coaches heads. Sat 87-88, maxed out at 89 with late jump to his FB. The delivery is slow paced, the arm-swing is deep and longer with a high 3/4 release. Impressive 2020 arm to follow.

2020 RHP Aidan Curry (Fordham Prep)
All heads turned to the lean, wiry, 6-foot-5 Curry when he toed the rubber. The delivery is compact and repeatable, arm-swing is fluid with no restrictions, releases from a high 3/4 slot with arm-side run to his FB. The FB sat 85-86 (has been up to 88) with more velocity in the tank. The three pitch mix plays at the next level.

2020 RHP/1B Max Luke (Croton Harmon)
Well built, thick durable frame, moves well defensively around the bag, above average throwing arm from the corner. At the plate he put on a display of power, especially to his pull-side (Right center), the barrel is fluid with some slight lift through contact. On the bump the righty was the best we have seen him. FB sat 85-87 and pounded the lower half of the strike zone, the lower half works, the mechanics are clean, the arm is fluid. Lots to like from the 2020 RHP.

2022 RHP/C Brendan Kenneally (Kennedy Catholic)
Wide base in the box, slight stride on the pitch for timing. Path is direct, barrel works slightly uphill, showed control using all fields during BP. Catching his footwork and release were average, but the arm showed signs of above average strength and carry. On the mound he works using a wide base, average tempo to the delivery, he works slightly around his front side, releases from a 3/4 slot, FB sits in the upper 70s, low 80s at times. Young 2022 prospect to keep an eye on.

2023 RHP/SS Joseph Curreri (Honesdale HS)
Stands 5-foot-10, 155-pounds with room for growth. At the plate he's relaxed, slightly wide stance with a short stride for timing. Path is short and fluid, slightly uphill through contact with some pullside gap power. Defensively his lower half is active, above average arm-strength for an 8th grader with accuracy to the bag. Really projects from the mound this early in his development. Smooth repeatable mechanics, loads on his back side, long arm-swing, slight pull towards the 1st base side with his body, fastball ranges from 78-81 (82) with a feel from his 12/6 shape CB. If Curreri keeps getting better, he should see plenty of interest soon.

2021 C Tyler Pugliese (Yorktown HS)
Strong frame in the box, slightly open stance, hands are low prior to the pitch, smooth load, hands are direct to the ball, barrel is slightly uphill, showed some gap-to-gap power during his BP session. Advanced behind the dish, receives from a wide, confident base. Throws to second were clean, form a high 3/4 slot, low 70's arm with a 1.97 pop time, very accurate. Next-level backstop.

2020 3B Diego Urreta (Walter Panas)
Smaller build with an athletic thick frame, suitable for the 3B position. Had an impressive overall workout. Very active at the corner defensively, soft quick hands with a fast accurate release, above average arm-strength. At the box, shows a very relaxed approach, loose hands from the left side, swing is fluid showing barrel speed through the ball. Fun player to watch.

2020 RHP Nate Kilburn (CBA-Albany)
Works with pace on the mound, sound mechanically, thick strong lower half. Drops and drives on his back leg prior to driving forward, releases from a high 3/4 slot, low-mid 80's FB with feel for a 70-73 mph CB that shows 11/5 shape.

2020 LHP Robert Carbone (Valhalla HS)
Stands 5-foot-9, 160 pounds with room to expand. Faster pace to his delivery, belt high knee lift, long, clean arm-swing, slight upper body tilt towards 3rd base side, releases from a high 3/4 slot, FB peaked 81 mph with signs of more in the tank. Throws a true 12/6 breaking ball. Showed the ability to keep the ball down in the zone.

2021 RHP/OF James Murray (Westlake HS)
Open stance in the box, strides back to even on the pitch, hands are short and compact, direct to the ball showing gap-to-gap power potential. Defensively he worked out in the OF, stays behind the ball and gets through his throws, shows accuracy with an average arm (high 3/4 slot), some carry to the plate. Projects from the mound. Slow delivery, deep longer arm-action, releases from a high 3/4 slot, above average feel for a sharp BB, FB peaked 83 mph with more in the tank.

2021 RHP/1B Vincent Mariella (Mahopac HS)
At the plate he showed loose hands from a wide base, showed bat-strength at times during his BP round, at 1B he moved well around the bag, active lower half with a solid arm from the corner. Pitching he uses simply, easy paced mechanics, long full arm-swing, high 3/4 slot with a FB peaking upper 70s.

2020 LHP Bryce Reimer (Sullivan West)
The lefty is well-built, thick burly shoulders, with a durable frame. Stands 6-foot-3, 220 pounds. The delivery is slow but sound, arm-circle is mostly full, slightly back towards 2B. He releases the ball from an over-the-top slot, FB sits 84-87 with feel for a low-70s curveball. A definite follow moving forward.

2022 3B Kyle DeCresce (Burnt Hills HS)
Well built 2022 grad, physical appearance. defensively he gets around the ball, fields slightly deep into his stance, has a clean quick release from a strong throwing arm, high 3/4 slot. In the box, wider stance, small stride for timing, hands are strong and compact, displayed some pull-side power during BP. The rising Sophomore still has plenty of time to develop on the field and already shows signs of a next-level player.

2022 3B/RHP David Benard Jr (Schenectady HS)
Well built, durable frame. Physical in the box with both bat-speed and strength present during batting-practice. Showed more juice to his pullside from a slightly opened stance. Defensively he moves well for his size, stays behind the ball at third, long arm-swing from a high 3/4 slot, above average arm-strength. He also showed some arm-strength from the mound (up to 80).

2020 C Michael Rocas (Amsterdam HS)
Well built, sturdy backstop with above average receiving skills. Quick footwork, fast release, high 3/4 slot with an above average arm (77 mph), pop times hover the 2.0 range. In the box, he uses a wide stance, relaxed hands, strong and compact barrel path, mostly level through the zone, uses all fields, above average bat-speed.

2020 C Michale Mancuso (Westlake HS)
Lean wiry build, 6-foot-0, 165-pounds with room for physical growth. In the box, slightly open stance, Hands start relaxed near his shoulder, slight stride back to even for timing, hands power inside the ball, mostly level path with some light after contact. Behind the dish he uses a narrow stance, above average footwork, fast release, high 3/4 slot, had consistent throws during defensive evaluations with an impressive 2.0 pop time in the workout. Nice looking prospect to keep an eye on, especially once he adds more size and strength.

2021 3B/3B Chris Ubner (Cooperstown HS)
5-foot-8, 165-pounds with an athletic, active lower half. Defensively keeps his body is proper fielding position while getting through the ball on his throws, lower 3/4 arm-slot with a fast release, average arm. In the box he shows barrel control from a short path. Prospect to keep close eyes on.
