NYS Games: Team Eight Player Analysis

The dust has finally settled on the 2017 NYS Games. Over 230 players traveled and competed in Binghamton, NY in front of over 80 college coaches, eight professional scouts, and our entire PBR scouting staff - including the President of the National PBR brand, Sean Duncan. Team Eight reports are in the books, let's take a look the player analysis reports.

Team Eight Reports 

Ethan Pasco, OF (2018/St. Paul Catholic (ON)) Speedy 5-foot-7, 135-pound outfielder, ran a 6.62/60. Offensively - active pre-pitch movement, out of a nearly upright stance, drops hands before bringing bat through strike zone, repeatable motion, stays middle of the field, full extension with an exit velocity of 78 MPH, further engagement of lower body will add to power. Defensively - agile footwork, takes economic lines to the ball, gathers body to create momentum, sure hands, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 78 MPH.

Jack Migliore, OF (2019/Wellsville) Athletic, 6-foot, 178-pound outfielder with potential, ran a 6.98/60. Offensively - effective load, short to the ball, smooth and fluid swing, effortlessly brings bat through the strike zone on a level path with exit velocity of 93 MPH, repeatable motion, room for counter rotation between upper and lower torso to add to power. Defensively - clean and efficient setup, easily generates momentum, sure hands, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 84 MPH.

Dylan Vincent, OF/RHP (2018/Olean) Physically gifted 6-foot, 205-pound outfielder, ran a 7.01/60. Offensively - left-handed batter, smooth and fluid swing with quick, strong hands, short to the ball, effective load, keeps bat on level path through strike zone with a repeatable motion and full extension for an exit velocity of 90 MPH, evident counter rotation between upper and lower torso, further lower body engagement will add to already existing power. Defensively - confident and poised, sets up easily behind the ball, smooth transfer with a position velocity of 87 MPH. Pitching - RHP, clean arm action, uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 81-84 MPH, shows positive hip tilt at the balance point, keeps batters off balance with 12-to-6 curveball at 72-74 MPH, consistently induces weak contact.

Cole O’Connor, 3B (2018/St. Francis) Sturdily-built 5-foot-10, 210-pound third baseman. Offensively - left-handed batter, engages hips with inner knee rotation, short to the ball, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 89 MPH, lives in the middle third with a repeatable motion, further counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add power. Defensively - poised and confident, clean, economic footwork, soft hands, smooth transfer, accurate arm across infield at 80 MPH.

Will Carlone, OF/1B/RHP (2019/St. Joseph’s College Institute) Sturdily-built 6-foot-2, 205-pound right-handed batter, ran a 7.04/60. Offensively - evident load out of a nearly upright stance, keeps bat on a level path through the strike zone with extension and upper cut after contact for an exit velocity of 94 MPH, repeatable motion, comfortable driving middle third, tends to pull side, scary to think what could with lower body engagement. Defensively - confident and poised, gathers self well behind ball, efficient transfer, accurate arm from the outfield at 81 MPH. Pitching - hides ball well, clean arm action, uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 80-82 MPH, effectively changes eye levels, there is more in the tank,  keeps batter off balance with curveball at 67-68 MPH, consistently induces weak contact.

Connor Fenlong, INF/RHP (2018/Gouverneur) Dynamic 6-foot-3, 202-pound RHP, ran a 7.33/60. Offensively - effective load, appropriate pre-pitch movement, short to the ball with quick hands, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension with upper cut after contact for an exit velocity of 93 MPH, repeatable motion, stays middle third. Defensively - fundamentally sound, poised and confident, soft hands, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 82 MPH. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 88-89 MPH fastball that touched 90 MPH, positive hip tilt at the balance point, finishes with full extension, maintain motion and delivery on curveball at 76-78 MPH. 

Alec Tamburri, OF (2018/Lancaster) Lanky 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder, ran a 7.39/60. Offensively - loose, fluid swing, brings bat through the strike zone on a level path, full extension with slight upper cut and an exit velocity of 79 MPH, keeps hands inside ball, repeatable motion, some evidence of lower body engagement, further use of counter rotation between upper and lower torso will power. Defensively - fundamental footwork, comfortable transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm with a velocity of 81 MPH. 

Christian Szablewski, OF/RHP (2018/St. Mary’s) Lanky 6-foot-5, 180-pound right-hander, ran a 7.4/60. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 82-83 MPH, evidence of arm-side run, clean arm action, effectively uses hip tilt at balance points to create power, maintains motion on 2-to-8 curveball at 64-67 MPH. Offensively - loose and fluid swing, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, repeatable  motion, full extension with slight upper cut for an exit velocity of 88 MPH, shows some lower body engagement, further counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, fundamentally sound, smooth transfer to accurate arm at 83 MPH. 

Ty Syta, C (2018/St. Francis) Sturdy 6-foot, 216-pound catcher, ran a 7.4/60. Offensively - the LeMoyne College commit has a smooth, fluid swing, effortless, stays inside the ball, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone with full extension for an exit velocity of 86 MPH; repeatable motion, uses counter rotation between upper and lower torso to involve hips, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - fundamentally sound, stays low through the receiving, quick, seamless transfer to throwing hand with a velocity of 78 MPH, accurate arm and a POP time of 1.97-2.07.

Jacob Bruning, OF/LHP (2018/Royalton-Hartland) Solidly-built 5-foot-11, 165--pound left-hander, ran a 7.44/60. Pitching - quick arm action with arm-side run on 78-79 MPH fastball that touches 80 MPH, uses hip tilt to gather self at balance point, throws 10-to-4 curveball for strikes at 71-73 MPH and mixes in change-up at 71-72 MPH, effectively changes eye level, consistently induces weak contact. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, keeps bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension with an exit velocity of 84 MPH, repeatable motion, uses inner knee rotation to involve hips, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, sound fundamentals, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 75 MPH.

Brandon Ortiz, MIF (2020/Warwick) Slender 5-foot-10, 150-pound MIF, ran a 7.51/60. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension with an exit velocity of 77 MPH; repeatable motion, counter rotation between upper and lower body will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 79 MPH.

John Bender, 3B/RHP (2018/Wilson) Sturdy 6-foot-2, 225-pound RHP, ran a 7.59/60. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 79-80 MPH fastball that touches 82 MPH, 12-to-6 curveball at 67-69 MPH freezes batters, consistently induces weak contact, developing hip tilt at balance point to engage lower torso. Offensively - effective load, appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps hands inside ball with full extension after contact for an exit velocity of 90 MPH, inner knee rotation triggers hips, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - basic footwork, sure hands, effective transfer with accurate arm at 78 MPH.  

Charlie Bruning, 1B/RHP (2019/Royalton/Hartland) Sturdy 6-foot-1, 215-pound RHP, ran a 7.67/60. Pitching - uses height to get downward plane on 78-80 MPH fastball that touches 81 MPH, arm-side run, 2-to-7 curveball at 68-69 MPH falls off the shelf to right-handed batters, effectively changes eye level, consistently induces weak contact. Offensively - loads heavy, brings bat through strike zone on level path, full extension for exit velocity at 89 MPH, some evidence of lower body engagement, scary to think how much power he can generate with seamless counter rotation between upper and lower torso. Defensively - comfortable footwork, smooth transfer, sure hands.

Jack Arnold, C (2019/Cansius) Athletic 5-foot-9, 182-pound catcher, ran a 7.73/60. Offensively - out of nearly upright stance, loads heavy, brings bat through on level path, full extension for an exit velocity of 85 MPH, repeatable motion, further lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - stays low through the receiving process, quick transfer with a velocity of 76 MPH and POP time of 1.97-2.08, accuracy needs improvement.

Brian Norsen, 1B/RHP (2019/Frontier) Sturdy 6-foot-3, 195-pound RHP with a pitcher’s frame, ran a 7.74/60. Pitching - out of ¾ slot, uses height to get downward plane on fastball at 83-85 MPH, maintains release point on 12-to-6 curveball at 68-70 MPH. Offensively - loads heavy, brings bat through strike zone on level path, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 89 MPH, repeatable motion, lower body engagement will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer with accurate arm at 75 MPH.

Samuel Mullen, C (2018/Silver Creek) Sturdy 6-foot, 200-pound catcher, ran a 7.8/60. Offensively - effective load and appropriate pre-pitch movement, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension after contact with an exit velocity of 88 MPH; repeatable motion, evidence of lower body engagement, developing counter rotation between upper and lower torso will add to power. Defensively - stays low through the receiving process, smooth transfer to throwing hand, accurate arm with a velocity of 76 MPH and POP time of 1.95-2.07.

Nicholas Constantino, MIF (2020/) Athletic 5-foot-9, 165-pound middle infielder. Offensively - comfortable driving the ball to the middle third with a repeatable motion, effective load, keeps hands inside the ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension with an exit velocity of 77 MPH; uses lower body, developing counter rotation between upper and lower half will add power. Defensively - economic use of footwork, sure hands, comfortable transfer, accurate arm at 75 MPH.

Ian Evans, RHP (2019/Wilson) Lanky 6-2, 165-pound RHP with a projectable pitcher’s frame. Pitching - learning how to use height to get downward plane out of a ¾ slot on 82-83 MPH fastball that touches 84 MPH (Recently slightly higher velo), lively arm, late movement, 12-to-6 curve ball at 69-71 MPH keeps hitters off-balance, effectively changes eye level, induces weak contact. Offensively - out a nearly upright stance, uses inner knee rotation, brings bat through strike zone on a level path with full extension for an exit velocity of 82 MPH, easy to see how lower body engagement will add to power.

James Filippelli, RHP (2018/Niagara-Wheatfield) Athletic 6-foot-4, 195- pound RHP with a projectable pitcher’s frame. Pitching - clean arm action, uses height to get downward plane out of a ¾ slot on fastball at 84-87 MPH, hip tilt at balance point initiates momentum, stays consistently down in the zone, throws curveball at 74-77 MPH for strikes. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, brings bat through strike zone on level path, full extension for an exit velocity of 83 MPH; repeatable motion, counter rotation between upper and lower half will produce power.

Scottie O’Bryan, RHP (2018/Jamesville-DeWitt) Slender 6-foot-2, 180-pound RHP with upside. Pitching - Clean arm action out a ¾ slot, hides ball well, gets downward plane on 81-82 MPH fastball that touches 83 MPH, throws 12-to-6 curveball for strikes at 73-74 MPH. Offensively - effective load, keeps hands inside ball, brings bat through strike zone on level path, full extension for an exit velocity of 82 MPH, further lower body engagement will add add power.

Tyler Regan, RHP (2018/Orchard Park) Sturdy 6-foot-1, 175-pound RHP. Pitching - Ball jumps out of hand with quick arm action out of ¾ slot, gets downward plane on fastball at 79-80 MPH, stays down in the zone with tight 12-to-6 curveball at 68-69 MPH, sharp bite on slider, throws change-up at 71-72 MPH, effectively changes eye level, consistently induces weak contact.
